My Peugeot 405 1.6 (or Dave as I like to call it)

Advantages: great drive, reliable, very cheap and easy to fix
Disadvantages: fuel consumption

...easy to pick up on. Safety-wise the 405 seems to be built like a tank. If I was heading towards a rather fearsome looking tree in one I wouldn't be fearing for my life as I would be in something like a Ford Escort (see my other review!) An added bonus is the fact that, even at 11 years old, the car still returns a nice even 30 miles per gallon for unleaded! Features: Electric windows Electric sunroof Peugeot standard spoiler adequate engine (90BHP) Central locking (although it is disabled as it is faulty) Power assisted steering It is very roomy inside and can easily accomodate me, my wife, and both our kids as well as a boot full of bags. And even with all this it drives as if it is not loaded at all! There's plenty of leg room in the back, and the driving position is very comfortable. All manner of ways of adjusting it...

Peugeot 405 GLD - Reliability itself

Advantages: Big, reliable
Disadvantages: NO power, but then get Turbo diesel (which is fast!)

...Just turned 17, Dad comes home and says, "Son, I bought you a car" Too my relief it wasn't a Vauxhall Nova. No it was an x-fleet car - a Peugeot 405 GLD in Midnight Blue. Now this car is far from fast. With it's odd 70bhp, it will reach 60 in a day. However if you buy one of these, you don't buy it for the performance. I got mine because it keeps my speed down. Engine The 1.9l fuel injected normally aspirated Diesel engine, is reasonably quiet and smooth. It takes a couple of seconds for the glow plugs to heat up, but I, in 3 years of having 200k+ on the clock have had it not start. Now at 200k, the engine is just about run in! Don't be scared of buying a high mileage diesel, as they are just so robust. Check things like, lots of smoke coming out the exhaust, this will tell you if it has been looked after. Try and get full service...

Peugeot 405 GLX

Advantages: Comfortable, spacious, well equipped, surprisingly powerful
Disadvantages: Multiple small problems led to engine failure, poor fuel economy

...I paid £300 from a friend for this my first car. Brought in 2004 and I only replaced it when it failed. The 405 GLX is a good powerful mid-sized car which is comfortable and hard wearing. The car I had the 1.6 GLX saloon model. I would suggest choosing a fuel-injected model. The saloon models have masses of space in both the back seat and especially i the boot, more than enough for a family holiday and too much for a weks shopping. The GLX is the top of the range with lots of little extras; electric front-seat windows, driver air bag, dual breaking system, power steering, factory air conditioning, fuel injection, fold down rear seat, center arm rest and small covered opening into boot to store ski's extra. Also contains velvet-like seat covers, adjustable lumbar supports for both passenger and driver, adjustable steering wheel...

  Executive Status For Next To Nothing

...Perhaps a 405 is not the obvious choice of car for a car enthusiast like me, but as I will explain, this is a serious good motor! I bought the car, a 1993 Peugeot 405 STDT (1.9 Turbo Diesel) back in February this year which means I have had it for nearly 6 months now, making it probably the second longest time I have ever kept a car. It is the car I use on an everyday basis as its a diesel and therefore economical, and, in 5 months of driving, I have covered 5,500 miles in it. Ok that isn't much but I feel I know the car very well now and am prepared to preach about it! :-) I bought it as a 'second' car to use as a 'main' car if you what I mean. It cost me well under £2k, was an ex- english car which had been used on motorways most of its life so it felt a lot tighter and tidy of itself than the indicated 148,000 miles...

  Riding with Elegance Among the Dirty Masses

..., because of the hugely inflated costs in Israel would be totally irrelevant to quote for you here - even if I translated it into UK or US money). It came down to a choice between two cars and when one owner decided not to accept our offer, we ended up with a 1995 Peugeot 405 GLX. This little baby was apparently owned by some boss-man who traveled abroad frequently. In other words - low mileage (kilometrage, as the case may be) but a bit neglected. For instance, the passenger seat's electric window was somewhat sticky (and still is, but then, I didn't think it important to fix it), and there were some loose things here and there - but nothing that a few pulls with a wrench couldn't handle. The GLX is considered to be the luxury model of this car, and so it is. It has all those nice little extras like the electric front-seat windows...

Wonderfully overlooked car!

Advantages: Better than the competition. CHEAP!!
Disadvantages: Fuel economy not the best

..."Never gamble if you can't afford to lose!" Very wise advice my father gave me as a youngster, and which I have always remembered when buying cars. Now I love my cars, but I will not borrow large sums of money on something which is always a big gamble! With this in mind, I was fairly relaxed about parting with £500 for a 1994 Peugeot 405 2.0 Sri. That may sound quite cheap as it is, but when you add to it, 2 owners from new (father then daughter), a genuine 85k miles, 6 months MOT and FSH, it suddenly sounds a WHOLE lot more appealing! For some reason, people don't want petrol powered peugeot 405's. Why, I don't know, but I am very pleased they don't , and if you are looking for a good cheap family car, you could be equally pleased too! ...Imagine my predicament - second year at university, with a 10 mile commute between my digs and campus. I was sharing a house with four others, and none of them had wheels. My car at the time was very special to me - a classic 1978 VW Golf, with a very low mileage. ...If you are looking for a used cheap car for your family and you have a restricted budget, then I can highly recommend a Peugeot 405. I have owned two of them now, a 1.6 GL and a 1.6 GR. Both of these are carb models, which is the only criticism that I could level at the car. The carbs on 1.6 engines are unreliable and require tuning every 30,000miles. I would suggest choosing a fuel-injected model. Both of my cars have been saloons and even with three kids I can still fit the entire luggage in the gargantuan boot. Economy and range are excellent thanks to a large 70-litre fuel tank. The interior is hard wearing and comfortable. The list of equipment on my current 1.6 GL J 92 is excellent. I paid 1400.00 for the car a year ago and it came with Electric windows and sunroof and remote central locking/alarm. The 1.6 is group 6 insurance...

...Peugeot 405 1.9 GR The family orientated Peugeot 405 was one of Peugeots main sellers throughout the 90?s replaced by the 406 a few years back it now makes for a wise 2nd hand buy. The styling is similar to many family saloons though it is slightly less boxy looking than many of its rivals. Other models in the range benefit from alloy wheels and a discreet rear spoiler which certainly add to the aesthetics of the car. The interior is very comfortable with a good driving position and a solid feel to it. Facilities vary greatly throughout the range depending on age and model and as such it is somewhat hit and miss to try to give an accurate assessment. Fantastic car

...The Peugeot 405 is a great car. Designed by Pinin-farina so it looks nice as well. The saloon is big enough to transport any amount of luggage (the boot is absolutely huge) and the estate is even better - both are extremely comfortable. Features are excellent for the age of the car, even the reasonably base model (GL) came with electric windows. I am a bit of a boy racer at heart, so I have fitted a leather interior and a turbo engine to it, but as a first car it was absolutely fantastic. Easy to drive, and a very smooth ride. The handling of these cars simply cannot be beaten. French cars may seem a bit cheaply-built at times but it sticks to the road like glue.
