Laguna 1.9dCi Hatchback
Advantages: Safe
Disadvantages: Uncomfortable
...I drive a reasonable number of miles in my work (around 3000/month) and have recently had the opportunity to sample several cars in this class. The Laguna has been my least favourite for a number of reasons.
Firstly, I have been driving this particular vehicle for around 5 months. It is a hire car, and I am unsure of the trim level - there are no other markings on the car other than 1.9dCi. It is an up to date model - 05 plate.
My main issue is comfort. I am just over 6ft & I find that the door handle is constantly rubbing my knee. This sounds minor, but when you are in a car for a couple of hours it becomes a huge annoyance. I have tried every adjustment but have yet to find a comfortable seating position. Also note that boot space is less than I expected.
Another area worth mentioning is the sun visor. When this is down, it...

Skoda Fabia 1.9tdi estate
Advantages: Price, economical, comfortable, fast acceleration, vast storage space
Disadvantages: None
...I bought my first Skoda 5 years ago when I retired from my full time occupation. I had intended to buy a decent second hand model but on visiting the dealer, I was so impressed with the estate version of the 1.9tdi Fabia, that I took the plunge.
Having since had 100% reliability, economical fuel consumption , the added bonus of quick off the mark acceleration for an exceptionally value for money price, I am glad I took the plunge as I have not regretted my choice of car.
Capacious boot space that takes all my golf clubs, trolley and more without having to lower the rear seats is also something to appreciate.
I traded that in 3 years ago for the same model but with added extras such as cd player, air con, alloy wheels at what appeared to be very little price difference from the first one I bought.
The ability to gain quick...

2002 VW Passat 1.9TDi 130bhp
Advantages: Spacious, frugal, good performance.
Disadvantages: Looks aren't very exciting.
...I drive a 2002 (52 plate) VW Passat 1.9 TDi 130bhp for work and it has been very reliable and dependable. The engine is by far the best bit about this car - over 40mpg even when driving swiftly and very quiet whether cruising on the motorway or driving around town.
The model i drive is reasonably well equipped - it has a good air conditioning system, electric mirrors, windows, sunroof etc. The only extra i would have added is a factory CD player.
The seats are comfortable on long motorway drives and the road holding is good for a car of this size and weight.
Interior is spacious enough to accomodate 4 adults comfortably - 5 at a push. The boot is also very spacious.
I have also driven the 115bhp model and would thoroughly recommend buying the 130bhp model insead. The fuel economy isn't noticably different yet the 130bhp model is far...

My new 406 1.9 TD LX-S
Advantages: Big, Bold and Beautiful
Disadvantages: None so Far!
...I am now the proud owner of a 4-year-old 406 1.9TD. And what can I say - 'What a car!'. I love it. My previous car was a Ford Sierra 2.0 Petrol and this new 406 delivers all the power I'm used to with the extra comforts of a newer car.
Power steering comes as standard, which is a godsend in my opinion. I wondered why my arms always ached after a long drive before! As I read in a previous opinion the full lock does not give as tight a turning circle as I am used to but it's only a niggle.
Other extras include electric front windows, air conditioning and a 10 CD changer. The windows have two position button - press them hard and the window opens fully. This can be a little annoying, especially if it's raining!
The air conditioning works hot or cold. I thought air conditioning only gave you cool air but it actually de-humidifies hot...

Alfa Romeo 147 1.9 JTD
Advantages: Engine, Looks, Leather, Options on my car
Disadvantages: Safety, Reliability Record, Dealership Record
...Alfa Romeo 147 1.9 JTD 3dr Lusso
You probably just don?t understand Alfa's and until you sit in one-you never will?
Just bought an Alfa Romeo 147 1.9 JTD 3dr Lusso and on first impressions I?m delighted. It?s Navy Blue in Colour which sets the car off great against the Cream Leather, its a top of the range model and comes with SAT NAV, Cruise Control, Telephone, full heated Leather Upholstery, trip computer, 16inch Alloy wheels etc. The options are great, although not a requirement for everyone-however I would recommend the leather upholstery as a MUST its fantastic.
I test drove many cars before buying, yet decided on the Alfa 147, because it put the biggest smile on my face, it was the nicest car to sit in and felt the best to drive by a long way. The Golf mk4 GTi felt its age, and although the Golf mk5 1.6s that I...

A pretty good runner (without trying to tempt fate!), though slow
Advantages: Cheap, not a bad looking car, fuel efficient
Disadvantages: Low equipment models, slow
...Having my previous car written off, I had to find another car pretty quick for work. Normally, Peugeot would have been the last manufacturer I would have turned to!
I saw my 306 advertised locally for £800 with 6 months tax, and almost a full years MOT, so it seemed like quite a bargain. Having to look past my moderate dislike of Peugeots, and French cars in general, it actually wasn't a bad looking little car.
The model I have is the 1.9 naturally aspirated diesel engine, and the XND trim level. The first thing to notice inside the car is the lack of equipment. It has only a drivers airbag, no air con (not that I would normally expect that on a small N reg car), but was even missing things such as sunroof and electric windows. However, it did have an alarm, immobiliser and remote central locking, which I thought was quite good...

Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9
Advantages: Fast, Good Looking,
Disadvantages: Quite expensive to run
...A few years back I owned a Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9.
It was red with a black trim and full body kit.
The car inside was very roomy for a small car and could easily take 3 full size adults in the back without any problems.
to say the car was quick is an understatment, being quite light and with an injection engine the 205 GTi will beat most things at the lights without a problem and would stick to the road like Sh*t to a blanket, even in very wet weather. the car would even push you back in your seat when you were cruising at 70 mph and you wanted to overtake on the motorway, just put your foot down and BANG the pick up was amazing.
The handling was excellent although you did occasionally get a bit of oversteer but you do get used to it and know when it is going to happen so you could correct yourself.
I bought the car with 56...

Peugot 406lx - addendum to prev. op
Advantages: comfy, attractive, good ride
Disadvantages: no major
...I drive a lease vehicle, which I keep for 3 years. Having been given the choice of around ten "rep" type motors I opted for the Peugot 406lx petrol this time around.
I drove a Mondeo for the last term. I have nothing bad to say about the Mondeo, but after renting a 406 on an overseas trip I was hooked.
French cars in general ten to have a "softer" ride and comfort level.
Having a bad back this was one of my considerations.
After almost 12 months of driving the 406 and some 35000 miles later, heres my view.
A comfortable ride over long distances, i.e 850 miles from Zeebrugge to Trieste in around 11 hours, sometime wellying along the Autobahn, others just plodding. I felt quite comfortable throughout.
If I am not in too much of a hurry I can acheive 40 mpg plus at 80 mph-ish, by monitoring the mpg reading on the digital display...
