Did the Pharaohs write the Bible?
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
..., of Egyptians, not Hebrews, from the Nile lands. That period was the end of the reign of the Heretical Pharaoh Akhenaten. This Pharaoh had tried to introduce a new Monotheistic religion into a country traditionally governed by many hundreds of gods, the land was bankrupted as a result and the king and his followers sent packing and order was finally restored. The Monotheist were sent to the out reaches of Egyptian control where they could be no more trouble to the stability of Egypt, those fringes being the eastern colonies and dependencies in what is today termed the Holy Land, the land that later produced the Hebrew Bible. The exodus was led by two generals Rameses and Horemheb, both destined to become Pharaohs at a later date.
So this parallel story runs thus, a large group of people are sent out of Egypt for their religious beliefs, that they...

Fascinating look at the Child Pharaoh's legacy
Advantages: Thoroughly researched, surprisingly absorbing
Disadvantages: Occasionally repetitive, would have liked more colour photos
...A thorough and fascinating insight into the life and death of one of the most famous and historically beloved Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, the last child of the XVIIIth Dynasty.
The book opens with the 1922 discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon, and some background detail on the Valley of the Kings, the rulers of the dynasty, and other archaeological finds both previous and contemporary. The reader is then guided through Tutankhamen's tomb, just as the team uncovered it, through each room and the resplendant treasures within, in a detailed and shining inventory. It does grow a little tiresome in its excessiveness, but there were enough illustrations to keep me on track and make it exciting nonetheless. The author also uses this section to mention some of the mysteries and descrepancies surrounding certain...

Disadvantages: Expensive, Audio tour could have been better
...and attracted 1.7million visitors, setting a new standard for blockbuster touring museum shows. A further exhibition was later negotiated to travel around US museums between 1976 and 1979. However, due to some minor damage that occurred to one of the objects when it was returned after this second tour, the Egyptian government passed a law prohibiting the future loan of the objects. It wasn't until 2004 that the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities relented and began to negotiate with National Geographic the possibility of creating another international touring exhibition ("Tutankhamen and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs"), with the proceeds going towards the creation of the Great Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The new exhibition was to be bigger and better than the earlier ones, and was to travel around the US (Chicago, Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale...

Pharaohs, Puzzles and Pictures
Advantages: A challenging pastime
Disadvantages: frustrating at times
...progress automatically to the next. Each puzzle comes complete with a colourful graphic depiction of the puzzle ? sometimes these are simply pretty pictures, at other times the graphics are the puzzle itself. A menu system is used, occasionally with pull down menu options, to submit your answer.
There are 5 levels of puzzles (1 to 5, not surprisingly). All are linked by the Ancient Egypt theme. I must say though, that this is merely a selling point, as I have seen variations of many of the puzzles that do not relate to Pharaohs or their families! The puzzles allegedly get more difficult the higher up the levels you progress, but I really think that it depends on how your mind works as to how difficult the puzzles are for you. Once all 5 levels (50 puzzles) have been solved, the Lost Secret of the Pharaohs will be revealed to you! (42...

Pharaoh's Revenge
Advantages: See Op
Disadvantages: See Op
...Murder! Pillage! Politics!. . . Current drug culture, perhaps? . . . Not at all: It's a 3000 year old murder mystery, according to Bob Brier, the author of 'The murder of Tutankhamen'.
The boy-king, Tutankhamen (Tut), was dead by the time he was 20. Being the child of a secondary wife, Tut was never groomed for royal duties, this was left to his half-brother, the child of the king's Great Wife. But disaster struck and the brother died. This left the Pharaoh with 6 female children and no other sons. When the Pharaoh himself died, Tut, aged around 10 year old was made to marry his (full-royal-blood) half sister, also aged around 9 - together they became the new King and Queen of Upper and Lower Egypt.
Tut had come to the throne at a difficult time in Ancient Egypt. Akhenaten, their father, had left the usual seat...

Land of the Pharaohs
Advantages: Pyramids, temples, history, the Nile, interesting people.
Disadvantages: Extreme heat, culture shock, attitude to women.
...incredibly rich.
Thebes, or Luxor, is a beautiful city, much smaller than Cairo, with the Nile as the main thoroughfare. The essential points of interest here are the Valley of the Kings which houses the tombs of many of the greatest Pharaohs, the Karnak temple complex and the temple of Hatchepsut. The main part of the city and the temple complex are on the east bank with the tombs and Hatchepsut's temple on the west bank of the Nile. It is possible to go donkey trekking over the cliffs to the Valley of the Kings and this method does afford some spectacular views, for the less adventurous there are taxis (both the normal kind and horse-drawn ones are available). Also in the main part of the city you will find the market which is full of potential bargains as long as you like haggling.
The final part of my trip included...

Pharaoh Rules
Advantages: Superb sound effects, excellent gameplay and an endless round of challenges.
Disadvantages: It is just so incredibly addictive
...This has to be the ultimate simulation game I have ever played. It is based on Ancient Eygpt and the idea of the game is to build a city and eventually become Pharaoh. You start with a blank landscape with a tribune of the nile.
You begin with some cleared land and a well, then the natives move in and start building homes and need farms to grow crops. Then they need the luxuries in life like pottery, different types of food, entertainment like jugglers and beer.
The game is loaded to overflowing with neat features and excellent like details. If you click on the base of a building you get sound effects for that building my favourite being beer being poured in the brewery, fishing sounds on the fishing wharf and the sound of the soliders in the infantry fort.
There are constant challenges throughout the game as you try to...

Pharaoh is one of many strategy titles which center on city building and controlling and developing some ancient civilization. Whilst the basic element of each of these titles is the same, there are enough subtle differences to justify a separate title for each in their own right.
Pharaoh sees the player as with any other such title such Caesar, Emperor Zeus etc, presented with levels with differing objectives and resources. Some levels will require you to build a monument including a pyramids, temples etc, others, to raise a powerful army and defend your city against enemy attack. Pharaoh...

Get a Pharaoh's head!
Advantages: temple/tomb visits, Nile cruises
Disadvantages: Nile is too polluted
...Aswan is situated on the eastern bank of the Nile River at a point where the river narrows and the terrain becomes hilly and festooned with rocky outcrops.
The possibility of Islamic Fundamentalist attacks on tourists in Egypt remains. Foreign Office advisory notices offer the latest official advice and should be consulted before booking.
There is the usual array of scruffy souk and bazaar-type shopping streets in the centre. Intimidation and fierce bartering is the norm here. Souvenirs include papyrus, brass, jewellery and stone-cut pharaohs' heads. Some of the larger, better-equipped hotels have their own retailers providing everything from toiletries to postcards.
Although Aswan has no beach it does have the Nile, which helps create a resort-type atmosphere. Unless you are an avid collector of virulent waterborne...

Caesar and Pharaoh, meet Zeus
Advantages: Basic gameplay tweaked to perfection, other game elements expanded and improved, less bewildering for casual gamers, story based with more focussed objectives
Disadvantages: Cutesy presentation, still essentially the same as previous games
...Impressions struck gold with the first game in their 'City Builder' series, Caesar III, an intricate and detailed game in which you constructed and managed a city from scratch in ancient Rome. Although hugely playable, it mainly appealed to hard-core strategy enthusiasts due to the amount of micro-management and dull manipulation of figures. The sequel, Pharaoh, streamlined the game somewhat and removed many of the irritations of the first, although it received something of a lukewarm reception, being hailed as 'Caesar in Egypt', since the gameplay was essentially the same as the first game. Now, we have a third, Zeus - Master of Olympus. Unsurprisingly, this one is set in ancient Greece. Surprisingly, it has changed considerably from its predecessor.
DECIET AND DECEPTION
If you have never played either Caesar or Pharaoh, when you...
