Philips DVDR 3380 DVD Recorder

Advantages: Simple to use and good functionality.
Disadvantages: Startup is a little slow.

...Just like the other user, I too had this issue with the recording problem with Philips brand 4x+RW discs. Having had some prior experience with PC drives, I logged onto the Philips website (search for 'P4C' ) and burned the firmware update for this recorder onto a CDRW. After updating the set, it was able to record onto the philips discs! It also seems to be able to record on most minus format discs and a few +RDL discs. Video and audio quality is OK. Build quality is OK. Remote is uncluttered but the multifunction buttons (FFWD is long-press of chp fwd) needs getting used to. The main gripe I have is the long start up time but it seems that all recorders have this issue. HDD-based recorders, it seems, can have even longer startup times depending on the number of titles in the HDD! Why can't DVD recorders be like their...

Philips DVDR 3300H

Advantages: Hard Disk recording, time shifting, 8hr recording on dvdr, firewire input
Disadvantages: can't record directly to dvdr, 5min chapters, can't adjust timeshift buffer

...live tv, not holding your recording until the ads are finished. You can wait until the programme is finished and edit the ads with the edit function. All recordings are presented in a menu much like a dvd for easy access however you cannot enter a time from within the recording to start playing. You cannot resume from the same point of a previous viewing unless you update the firmware first from the Philips website. You will have to play it from the beginning or select chapters. The chapters are automatically inserted at 5 min intervals, again a feature which cannot be adjusted but only turned off completely. From the same menu you can Name recordings, delete or protect them from deletion and transfer them to a dvdr/rw. The dvdr 3300h accepts the +/- r/rw formats and also +r DL. You can select various recording qualities from HQ (high...

Philips DVDR890- The cream of the crop

Advantages: Wide Range of Compatible formats, Good quality recordings, good size, value for money, easy set-up
Disadvantages: Occasional flat audio, Manual is very confusing (just worked it out myself)

...* Initial Note * At last, we can now record our favorite programs on to DVD. Slowly and surely VHS is becoming the old BETA MAX, and before you know it we will no longer see viedos in the shops. DVDs are surely, taking over. DVD Recorders are surely a step in the right direction -moving away from the drone, and irritating dull quality that we have been used to for the past 20 years. The Philips DVDR890 is just one of these new innovations, and as I have experienced, is one of the better ones on the market at the moment, reasonably priced to as low as £480. So why is it a good buy? *Features* When I first purchased the DVD recorder just after christmas in 2003, I realised that it was very simple to install. Once you had plugged in all of the input leads from your different appliances, (and obviously gave it a power...

Phillips DVDR70 recorder

Advantages: Very realiable, solid machine
Disadvantages: One or Two niggles from slowness to not liking cheaper discs

...in the same way! Including Sony and Panasonic models. Neither lasted 12 months and yet cost at least as much as this machine did. Very easy to set up the timer to record, and it works well with both Sky and Freeview TV set up. The booklet that came with it was comprehensive and easy enough to read and use. We arent great technically at this sort of thing, but we managed to have it set up and running within an hour using just the booklet. Okay onto the niggles. First of all, it can be slow waiting for it to all set itself up to work! You need a bit of patience when you power up and go to use it. Its fairly slow on command from the remote. You can only use +R or +RW discs. It tends to completely reject a lot of cheaper discs and gives a lot of disc errors as a result. We now have started using only Phillips Discs (we can get them...

Philips DVDR3330H

Advantages: Does the basics. The 6hr buffer is cool.
Disadvantages: Very poor usability.

...The Philips DVDR3330H does the basics. You can record to hdd while playing either from hdd or from dvd. You can hide ads and and other unwanted sections on a hdd recording and if you transfer the recording out to dvd the hidden sections are not transferred and do not take up space on the dvd. Also a very good feature which I didn't know about before I bought it, is that the unit continuously records what is being viewed into a 6hr buffer so you can not only pause and resume live tv but you can also actually rewind live tv (of course only back to the point at which you started watching). Or you can decide halfways through watching something that you like it and then record not only from that point on but from the point at which you started viewing. I don't know if this is standard on hdd recorders; Certainly it is very useful. Oddly if...

Philips DVDR5520H

Advantages: Excellent video recording and playback
Disadvantages: Maybe a little pricey compared to some but worth it

...RECOMMENDED. VERY well speced. Performance of the unit is just excellent. I received this in replacement for my faulty dvdr3450H which was - frankly - rubbish and kept breaking down all the time, so avoid them like the plauge! Video is sharp and clear when recorded from analogue or freeview and it works nicely with both sky and cable tv. Pauses live tv, has progressive scan and will upgrade normal dvd to high definition 1080 for use on your nice HD TV. Checked this out with my original Lord of the Rings and Star Wars dvd's and he results were just excellent ! Sound through my Kenwood / Mission / Eltax home cinema set up was just superb. You can even skip commercials when you play back programmes from hard drive, record onto both - and + dvd blanks (both R & RW) so no format worries and it will play DIVX as smooth as glass. It...

TOP MARKS FOR PHILLIPS

Advantages: DVD WORLD- RECORD.PLAY.BURN
Disadvantages: SOMETIMES SLOW

...Hi All I was looking at all the reveiws for phillips and was suprised with some of them as phillips has come a long way in the dvd world. This player is the nuts, point blank i am very happy that i brought this product so i will say a little more- I used to spend hours and hours downloading films and TV series but not no more!!!! This Player does more than what you could imagine and saves time for the consumer. Stargate is one of my fav shows and the amount of hours i used to spend converting all the TV shows onto dvd format but stop press; this player has DIVX built in and most of the websites i have been to looking for this tv show puts Stargate in DIVX format. The player will play all the downloaded programs with no trouble. Not only have i saved hours of burning from dvix to dvd or even into mpeg i just download in...

Philips lack technical quality in poor product

Advantages: Plays DivX media
Disadvantages: Very Slow, doesn't record own brand media and NO customer support

...:- • machine takes 12 seconds to start-up - all keys are locked until this is completed (meaning you can't eject or insert a disc - just got to stand around). Bear this is mind if you have young children who use the DVD! • from turning the machine on to actually recording a program takes around 35-40 seconds (sometimes longer as the machine is VERY temperamental). • the remote control is rubbish. The buttons are too small and close together and no eject button either (more standing around looking like an idiot). Interestingly, I went and looked on the Philips support website again today and found that a new fireware upgrade was available for the DVDR3380. Infact, the release date for the upgrade was 25 days prior to sending the above email (though not available on their website for 6 weeks after the release date). This...

Philips DVDR-1000 DVD Recorder

Advantages: Record onto DVD, Picture Quality, Remote Control, Features
Disadvantages: Standard Box, Chunky, Size, Picture, Price,

...the '+' version. Confused? Not surprising so when I had the opportunity to play with the new Philips DVDR-1000 recordable, I was not expecting an easy time in front of the box. Surprisingly, this machine put all our fears to rest and more. The Philips DVDR-1000 is one of the first stand alone DVD players that can record content off TV, video or another DVD player in the DVD+RW format. The biggest advantage of this format is that it is the most backwards compatible with the existing DVD player market out there at the moment. In the time I had this unit, all recordings onto the DVD+RW disc would playback on all players ranging from the recent Sony DAV-S300 Dream System right down to the first generation Pioneer DV-505. The only player that had issues with this disc was the Playstation 2 console. There are so many features that this player...
