Philips DVP 3100V
Review of Philips DVP 3100V by
Walls1993
Advantages: Plays large range
Disadvantages: not multi regional
...We bought the Philips DVP3100v DVD/VCR combi as it plays a large range of media types and has a 6 head VCR player with PAL I and PAL B/G which is suitable for UK and Australia. The DVD player does recognize my home movies in divX format (converted from wmv format - Windows Movie Maker files) and standard jpeg photos on CD-R discs - which is great. Unfortunately, we have not managed to make this machine multi-regional despite attempts at the more widely recommended hacks. However, the biggest problem has been the poor quality of VCR playback with some videos virtually unwatchable with flickering black screens enough to frustrate even our four year old. The manual tracking function doesn\'t help and now the Automatic Tracking doesn\'t seem to work (despite pressing \"0\" as the manual suggests). We have no problems with our 10 year old 2...

Does cheap mean chump?
Review of Philips DVP 3020 by
monumental
Advantages: Supports range of media formats.
Disadvantages: Might not last as long as a slightly more expensive model
...available including Coaxial Digital , Component Video , Composite Video , RCA and SCART. The A/V Formats anything from Mp3, SVCD, VCD or WMA. The DVP 3020's video formats in PAL.
This machine only supports region 2 DVD,s as a lot of players do, so if you are a film fan and like your imported films, you might want to pay a bit more for a player that will read region 1 DVD's.
The disc tray ejects from the front to give that classic DVD player appearance, but the tray is quite flimsy and is very shallow. The only other problem i have had with this machine is that after a bit of wear and tear it causes DVD's to jump and freeze slightly. This is nothing that can't be solved by a lens cleaner but seems to be more frequently required than a more expensive DVD player.
I feel the Philips DVP 3020, is a fine DVD player, although it might pay to spend...

The DVD player that delivers without hassle
Review of Philips DVP520 by
yunken
Advantages: So simple to instal and use
Disadvantages: Short on features for techies
...This DVD player from Philips is a joy!
Starting with the performance I wanted, DVDs on my screen, it delivers the goods and with all the features you would expect from a DVD player, Play, Select scenes, fast and slow forward and reverse and access to special features.
Oh and did I mention Dolby Digital sound.
Now it's a bit limited when it comes to playing CDs but then I've got a CD player so I don't need that.
What I did need was the ease of installation, out of the box, plug in the wires, watch the movie, how easy can that be, brilliant.
And my installation is not normal, the DVP520 is connected to a PC, Video Recorder, HiFi and Freeview box so admittedly I have a bit of a rats nest of wires behind it but still it was a no problem installation and it works great.
It does play CDs but thats about it no where near the features I have...

''five films, one disc''
Review of Philips DVP630 by
goofy123
Advantages: Plays DivX & Xvid files as well as DVD
Disadvantages: Strange uninspiring remote control.
...relatively quickly, and the quality of the video, will be excellent. I have downloaded several game trailers, game movie demos, movie trailers, and burned them all on to 1 blank dvd.
This DVP630 played all the files flawlessly, and i must admit i was surprised.
Being the sceptic that i am , i devised a further test-
I converted 5 movies from DVD to Divx using my PC, and then burned all five movies on to a blank DVD.
The DVP630 played all the movies perfectly!
I have found that sometimes the movie will not play correctly, (picture is garbled) but a quick press on the remote of the 'SYSTEM MENU' button twice, resolves this issue.
The remote does NOT have a 'eject' button, but i found out, if you press 'stop' on the remote twice, this will force the tray to eject! -- hmm strange !!
The machine has component outputs, scart/rgb and digital...

Good HDMI HD DVD player
Review of Philips DVP 5960 by
AdamHonek
Advantages: Cheap, very good 720p upscaled image quality
Disadvantages: Some remote control problems, takes time to read certain discs
...Overall very good and cheap HDMI HD 720p upscaler DVD player.
Has an attractive slim design and good build quality. The remote control is small and modern. The only snag in using it is that sometimes the menus don't react, probably the infra red sensitivity is a little less than it should be. The remote control lacks a HD upscaler and eject button.
You can upgrade the firmware off of Philips's support site to remove the bugs earlier firmware releases had. Sometimes on some discs it will read them for long before it starts playing, bad disc or laser running off track?
Produces remarkably good image quality of DVD's on large TV's (i.e. 50 inches or more).
There's a newer version out now that supports 1080p.
Overall a good/very good and cheap HDMI DVD player....

Philips DVP 5100/05 DivX DVD Player
Review of Philips DVP 5100 by
mikenewborn
Advantages: Plays multiple DVD formats and Video File Formats, Not Too Expensive
Disadvantages: The slot loading draw takes a while to eject.
...This unit has many positive attributes, but also a few negative.
-Positives-
I was searching the net for a decent DivX standalone player. I was looking for one which plays multiple file formats and multiple DVD types. This unit seemed to play the widest variety whilst still being in my price range.
The Philips DVP5100 will play DivX, Xvid, MPEG1 /2 /4, SVCD, JPEG Disc, MP3 Disc and a few other types listed on the manufacturer's website.
It has played every kind of DVD I have thrown at it also, including DVD+R's, which not all machines play. I was very happy about this as I'd just bought 100 of the things.
I haven't had any problems playing discs up to now, this machine has easily handled a disc with 17 separate DivX files and they all played fine.
The picture and sound quality is great. The unit has a Progressive Scan feature...

Wharfedale DS-A 243 HDMI dvd player
Review of Wharfedale DS-A 243 by
doowopinwales
Advantages: good picture - when it worked
Disadvantages: didn't work very often
...I bought a WHARFEDALE DS-A 243 from Argos. At first I was very pleased the HDMI picture was great. But on about the third attempt to load a disc it failed. It locked into 'loading' mode and could not be operated by the remote control. It had to be switched off and on at the wall to unlock it. (As I am bed ridden I need to use a remote control). It then worked once before locking again. After several further attempts I phoned Argos technical assistance who were unable to help. So it went back to Argos who replaced it with a new one. The new unit started off working fine and then it did exactly the same thing - refused to load and locked making the remote u/s. I emailed WHARFEDALE who didn't want to know. They referred me to Argos. The moral must be that you get what you pay for. I will now try a Philips DVP5960 and hope that's a bit...
