Philips DVP5960
Review of Philips DVP 5960 by
mike999g
Advantages: price, upscaling option, impressive playback features
Disadvantages: remote a bit fiddly
...With the increasing influence of High Definition and more and more products lining our shelves the demand is now catching up with the technology and budget DVD players with impressive HD upscaling are a cost effective option if you want to grab a piece of the action and enjoy an altogether better audio visual experience.
With an attractive price tag the Philips DVP 5960 boasts a range of features you would expect from a player twice the price. Once connected via a HDMI(High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable you have the option to select the picture resolution or use the automatic setting which will do the job for you, resulting pictures from standard DVD's are noticebaly sharper and colours more vibrant. You will need a HD ready TV to benefit and a large flat screen should do justice to the players impressive image...

Philips DVP 5100/05 DivX DVD Player
Review of Philips DVP 5100 by
mikenewborn
Advantages: Plays multiple DVD formats and Video File Formats, Not Too Expensive
Disadvantages: The slot loading draw takes a while to eject.
...This unit has many positive attributes, but also a few negative.
-Positives-
I was searching the net for a decent DivX standalone player. I was looking for one which plays multiple file formats and multiple DVD types. This unit seemed to play the widest variety whilst still being in my price range.
The Philips DVP5100 will play DivX, Xvid, MPEG1 /2 /4, SVCD, JPEG Disc, MP3 Disc and a few other types listed on the manufacturer's website.
It has played every kind of DVD I have thrown at it also, including DVD+R's, which not all machines play. I was very happy about this as I'd just bought 100 of the things.
I haven't had any problems playing discs up to now, this machine has easily handled a disc with 17 separate DivX files and they all played fine.
The picture and sound quality is great. The unit has a Progressive Scan...

Philips DVP 3100V
Review of Philips DVP 3100V by
Walls1993
Advantages: Plays large range
Disadvantages: not multi regional
...We bought the Philips DVP3100v DVD/VCR combi as it plays a large range of media types and has a 6 head VCR player with PAL I and PAL B/G which is suitable for UK and Australia. The DVD player does recognize my home movies in divX format (converted from wmv format - Windows Movie Maker files) and standard jpeg photos on CD-R discs - which is great. Unfortunately, we have not managed to make this machine multi-regional despite attempts at the more widely recommended hacks. However, the biggest problem has been the poor quality of VCR playback with some videos virtually unwatchable with flickering black screens enough to frustrate even our four year old. The manual tracking function doesn\'t help and now the Automatic Tracking doesn\'t seem to work (despite pressing \"0\" as the manual suggests). We have no problems with our 10 year old 2...

THE PHILIP DVD WONDER MACHINE.
Review of Philips DVP520 by
apatra
Advantages: LASTS LONG WITH BRIGHT PICTURES.
Disadvantages: SOME TIMES DOES NOT READ DISK AND NOT ENOUGH FEATURES ON TECHIES.
...The Philip DVD DVP520 has served quite long in my household and still showing more promise on serving again. I will actually say that the electronic giants PHILIP brought about the innovation of the compact disk because they were the first to put the use of the compact into reality and I still hail them for that. This is a DVD that has a lot of functions and really excites me as a user.
It has a sharp vision and a beautiful colour that makes the picture bright and also with a screen menu. It is an easy to operate device and when you get it don't forget to read the manual very well because electronic products, is well understood when the manual is read very well and it also helps in some trouble shootings.
It also has numerous screen menus that enable...

Philips DVP3020 - Stylish and cheap!
Review of Philips DVP 3020 by
IzzyS
Advantages: Stylish, good picture and audio quality, pretty good range of supported formats
Disadvantages: Had problem with a previous unit not working properly, Only region 2 compatible
...This DVD player might not have all the features and playback compatibility of some units but it certainly has a good look and feel to it. You can pick it up very cheaply too. It might not support DivX or Xvid playback but for me thats not a problem, however if you like to download movies and play them back using this kind of technology then this won't fit the bill for you (although I believe that there is a model Philips do which does include DivX playback, with the same sleek design just a slightly larger spec at maybe £30 or so more than this model, so that would probably be worth looking into).
This DVD player offers progressive scan, which gives it better picture quality compared to the old bog standard DVD players, it however does not upscale to HDMI (near HD picture quality). Having said that, I use my DVD player with my Philips...

Does cheap mean chump?
Review of Philips DVP 3020 by
monumental
Advantages: Supports range of media formats.
Disadvantages: Might not last as long as a slightly more expensive model
.../V connections available including Coaxial Digital , Component Video , Composite Video , RCA and SCART. The A/V Formats anything from Mp3, SVCD, VCD or WMA. The DVP 3020's video formats in PAL.
This machine only supports region 2 DVD,s as a lot of players do, so if you are a film fan and like your imported films, you might want to pay a bit more for a player that will read region 1 DVD's.
The disc tray ejects from the front to give that classic DVD player appearance, but the tray is quite flimsy and is very shallow. The only other problem i have had with this machine is that after a bit of wear and tear it causes DVD's to jump and freeze slightly. This is nothing that can't be solved by a lens cleaner but seems to be more frequently required than a more expensive DVD player.
I feel the Philips DVP 3020, is a fine DVD player, although...

MY Philips DVD Player
Review of Philips DVP720SA by
thespurs
Advantages: Looks nice, fairly priced and great audio/visual
Disadvantages: None as of yet
...--Introduction--
There is at last another addition to the Philips electrical family in our household. I am very pleased to say that this DVD player is a gift to me and now sits proudly in the seclusion of my own bedroom. I have been waiting for a while for my very own DVD player because there often isn't a solid two or so hours free time on the main living room television. It means that I hardly ever get to watch DVD's which can be very annoying. This DVD player is fairly up-market, a decision we made so that it would have a longevity and wouldn't need replacing for a number of years yet. This was purchased in store at Comet for £125 and it can be found at amazon.co.uk for £119.99.
--Picture Playback--
The televison that the DVD player is wired up to, is around five years old but the quality is excellent. The pictures...

If it doesn't play it, its not worth watching.
Review of Philips DVP520 by
mrmessy2
Advantages: Small, streamline, easy to use, inexpensive, play everything - almost
Disadvantages: No Scart Cable provided, doesn't record, not multi region.
...I was lucky enough to obtain my first dvd player when they first came out. It was a Goodmans player, cost £150.00 from a toy shop of all places. Seven Years down the line, it is a hunk of junk. It doesn't play lots of DVD's, it was bulky and at times noisy. Time to buy a new player.
Having taken a trip down to places you would expect to find a dvd player, Comet, Curry's, Powerhouse etc, I found just what I was looking for in ASDA of all places.
It was a Philips (a good name) DVP520 DVD player, it was only 47.99 but most of all it looked really good, probably about the length and breadth of most dvd players, but it is less than 2 inches in height. You could post this thing through a long, narrow letterbox. It has a silver case with a black LCD facia.
What also sets this DVD player apart from others is that it will play almost any...

A mix of old and new.
Review of Philips DVP 5960 by
dblock
Advantages: Affordable, reliable, some great features
Disadvantages: Can't play HD-DVD's, some configuration problems with some HD TVs
...The Philips DVP5960 is a top player which will suffice for most people looking for an affordable but advanced DVD player. There is a growing trend for DVD recorders and these will slowly replace VHS Recorders. However this DVD doesn't have the capability and thus is catered to a different market. With Phillips you know you are getting a superior product and it is worth paying the few extra quid rather than a non branded or inferior brand, which through many reviews sometimes cause problems for different people.
The best features of this DVD player are:
HDMI Upscaling: Basically this gives a high definition view of your current DVD's provided you have a HD television. Of course this doesn't give the same quality as the new HD DVD's but it certainly is a mark up from playing DVD's on your HD set, because you do seem to get some...
