Philips DVDR 3380 DVD Recorder

Advantages: Simple to use and good functionality.
Disadvantages: Startup is a little slow.

...Just like the other user, I too had this issue with the recording problem with Philips brand 4x+RW discs. Having had some prior experience with PC drives, I logged onto the Philips website (search for 'P4C' ) and burned the firmware update for this recorder onto a CDRW. After updating the set, it was able to record onto the philips discs! It also seems to be able to record on most minus format discs and a few +RDL discs. Video and audio quality is OK. Build quality is OK. Remote is uncluttered but the multifunction buttons (FFWD is long-press of chp fwd) needs getting used to. The main gripe I have is the long start up time but it seems that all recorders have this issue. HDD-based recorders, it seems, can have even longer startup times depending on the number of titles in the HDD! Why can't DVD recorders be like their...

Phillips DVDR70 recorder

Advantages: Very realiable, solid machine
Disadvantages: One or Two niggles from slowness to not liking cheaper discs

...in the same way! Including Sony and Panasonic models. Neither lasted 12 months and yet cost at least as much as this machine did. Very easy to set up the timer to record, and it works well with both Sky and Freeview TV set up. The booklet that came with it was comprehensive and easy enough to read and use. We arent great technically at this sort of thing, but we managed to have it set up and running within an hour using just the booklet. Okay onto the niggles. First of all, it can be slow waiting for it to all set itself up to work! You need a bit of patience when you power up and go to use it. Its fairly slow on command from the remote. You can only use +R or +RW discs. It tends to completely reject a lot of cheaper discs and gives a lot of disc errors as a result. We now have started using only Phillips Discs (we can get them...

...Virgin have gone down in my expectations and i am currently thinking of leaving them. When i first joined virgin media it was called telewest, i signed up to a large tv package and the internet at a cost of 40 pounds per month. This worked fine untill virgin media took over, Although they did bring better and more chanels to the table the prices went up and the customer service went down. When virgin took over they rang me to say i would be better off if i got the whole package which included xl tv, 20gb broadband and a phone line with free weekend calls as it would take my bill down to 35 pound a month, i also pay for disney cinemagic aswell so it would basically be taking 5 pound off my bill which i thought was fair enough. Since then the bill has went up and up and up! I still have the same package to which i had 4 years...

Virgin Media - Getting better...

Advantages: Basic sky channels are back!, Some good VOD content, good unlimited internet packages
Disadvantages: VOD reliability not 100%, webmail reliability & mailbox size, customer service rather 'hit or miss'

...** Important News/Update (Edit) 16/11/08:- Ok so on Thursday the basic Sky channels finally returned to Virgin Media, at least for those of us who are on the higher TV packages (their included in the L and XL packages, which are the two most expensive packages, I believe), which was good news for me! now I can access Sky1, Sky2 and Sky3 (Sky3 is also available on Freeview), as well as Sky News and Sky Sports News and for people on the XL package, we also get Sky Arts and Sky Arts2 as well as Sky Real Lives, which is nice, so obviously im quite relieved and impressed with that. DAMN, These Things Don't Work.

Advantages: Memorex rules: They produce affordable, high-quality discs.
Disadvantages: Most other brands just don't do it for me.

I still have a personal distaste for any recording product that Sony or Phillips produce, because these also tended to wear out quickly. I went to use the phone one day and basically i had no dial tone... i rang customer services and it stated on a automated message that if you were experience problems in the ST3 area, the engineers were aware of it and were working to rectify the problem. ...I buy all my blank media from SVP for one specific reason: it is cheap! I do a lot of CD and DVD burning so therefore get through a lot of discs. SVP offers good quality CD's and DVD's for a very reasonable price. First things first. I have been using SVP for about 3 years after a friend of mine told me about it and I now buy all my blank media from here (although they sell many other things). The website is fairly easy to use but can sometimes take a while to load up.
