Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0
Advantages: Great selection tools, pan & zoom in slide shows, price, printed manual
Disadvantages: file browser gone
...Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 aims to be everything the photographer wants for tweaking and fixing their images. Whilst the professionals prefer its more expensive big brother Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements isn't to be sniffed at and offers 80% of the power for 10% of the price whilst making many tasks much easier.
The biggest surprise coming from version 3 is that the file browser has gone. Adobe, what are you thinking? Well, it's clear what they're thinking, they want you to use the Photoshop Album interface which merged in to Photoshop Elements with version 3. It's actually a very powerful interface and lets you import and catalogue your images with ease and flexibility but sometimes, you just want to get down and dirty with the file system and the loss of a file browser hurts. As a sort of apology, Adobe have added the ability to...

Amazing Photo Editing Program (Adobe Photoshop CS4)
Advantages: Massive amount of features, endless ways to manipulate pictures
Disadvantages: Takes a while to learn how to use it
...Having recently reviewed Quark on here I thought I should also give a review on Photoshop as it is another program that I use on a daily basis.
Photoshop is a photo editing program which again as with quark I started when I was 17 (long time ago now) and at college studying Graphic Design, being young and having never used the program before I thought it was amazing, I didn't realize that there where programs out there that could do so much to pictures.
How times have changed, this program has been re-released several times since I first started using it and it has come on in leaps and bounds, it is now an even more amazing program which is packed full of features, you can pretty much do anything you like to a picture, it certainly makes me think twice when I see a picture in a newspaper or magazine, you never know what could have been...

Photoshop Elements Drop Dead Lighting techniques
Advantages: Concise yet easy to follow, some impressive looking projects, well presented
Disadvantages: Special effects section, a little light (sic) on explanations
...One thing that often separates an average photo from a great one is the quality of light. Real life rarely serves up the sort of light we'd like (especially in the UK) and so we have to fall back on post processing and editing to tweak things.
To the inexperienced user, this can be a bit of a hit and miss affair so I was very pleased to spot a copy of Photoshop Elements Drop Dead Lighting Techniques in the bookshop. The author Barry Huggins runs a multimedia and training consultancy at www.matrixtraining.com and has had his images used around the world so he ought to know a thing or two.
The first thing that strikes you is the gorgeous presentation of the book. Ilex Press titles we have seen have always been impressive in this respect with superb quality brilliant white paper, excellent layout and flaps on the thick glossy cover...

Elementary Photo-shopping
Advantages: Packed full of features, Great fun, Improve your digital images
Disadvantages: You need memory!!
...for showing off wedding pictures etc.
The organiser function of Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 is extremely useful, allowing you to fully mange the way you see your photos and images easily and quickly.
~~~~ Other Functions ~~~~
There are a number of other functions which can be found in both the editor and organiser modes.
Photo-merge function, it is possible to stitch separate photographs together to form one large image. This function in Photoshop allows you to load two or several photos at the same time and merge them into one to create panoramic images. This is great especially if the subject you're taking a photo of is too large to fit in one exposure. The function can be operated automatically, so you don't even have to line the photos up, very useful if you have a lot of panoramic images to create. See Fig 4 for the panoramic picture I...
My Photoshop is Welsh?
Advantages: Fairly easy to use, and has all the features your likely to need for photo editing. Included tutorials. Technical Support.
Disadvantages: It doesn't always work first time! It isn't wildly fast unless you have a very powerful PC. Closing and saving files is a bit torturous.
...My anticipation was high as I loaded the Adobe Photoshop Elements software. After all, all the reviews had been good, and previous Photoshop software worked like a dream.
However, my dreams came crashing down when I tried to run the edit option. I waited... and waited... but my system was stuck fast. The screen was frozen, and according to Task Manager, the software was not responding but was using up all my CPU!
I tried everything to fix the problem, including reloading Photoshop, removing anything remotely resembling 'photo software', reinstalling Norton, updating windows XP, resetting my screen refresh rate, and reducing my hardware graphics accelerator.
Then after a month of bemoaning this waste of money, I called Adobe.......
A very helpful tech support person, talked me through some checks, and then asked something...
Elementally Flawed
Advantages: Some well composed and catchy tracks
Disadvantages: Spoiled by Orzabal's personal agenda against his former band mate.
..., if you can ignore Orzabal?s obvious personal agenda, the five songs highlighted above in particular are definitely worth a spin. That said, its probably more one for the fans rather than the public at large, and despite the fact that it has its noteworthy moments, TFF?s best work clearly remained in the Eighties.
Recommended with reservations.
Catalog your entrire photo collection
Advantages: Easy to use, strong editing functions
Disadvantages: Slow to startup
...I'd recently bought a new digital camera and was taking lots of pictures so wanted an easy to use package that would catalog my files and also let me edit them, so I purchased Adobe Photshop Elements 4.0.
Instruction / Help
Elements did not come with any printed manuals only a cd, which contained installation instructions, e-books, websites and tools. The help system was very good, similar to Microsoft's MSDN, it's very thorough.
Installation
The installation was very easy, I just inserted the CD and followed the prompts. Installation took approx. 5 minutes.
Performance
The program itself takes a little while to start, but once it's started all operations seem reasonably quick on my Dell Laptop. In edit mode applying filters takes hardly any time.
Interface
The interface is very easy to use, there are 3 main...
It's as good as Photoshop non-upgrade edition, only cheaper!
Advantages: Runs on 64 bit processors properly. Uses the graphics card properly.
Disadvantages: Expensive to upgrade if you don't need the technical benefits. Most features are the same.
...Photoshop is the industry standard application for photo-manipulation and adjustment. You can't really beat it if you're in an industry where you need to adjust bitmap graphics.
This review assumes you already have Photoshop and are looking to upgrade (otherwise, why would you be looking at the upgrade edition? you can't upgrade if you don't have an older version already!)
The CS4 edition has two really great upgrade features: It uses your graphics card processor directly, making your work blisteringly fast. (Unless you don't have a decent graphics card of course!) The program is a little slower to run than CS3 and of course most of the features in CS3 are in CS4. The other good feature is that it can run in a dedicated 64 bit mode - so really making the most of your high powered PC.
New stuff
* Pixel editing. When you...
All the Elements of a Great Film
Advantages: Good story, Great acting and effects
Disadvantages: Aliens looked out of place and Zorg was annoying
...Although this film is set in 2257 we start 5000 years before this when a small temple in Egypt is visited by friendly aliens who explain about the 5 elements and the stone but then they are about to leave the 5th Element, the stone of life is broken and smashed. Back in the present, 2257, the hand of this statue has been found amongst some wreckage and with the technology which they have they re-grow the person who the hand belonged to.
Also on Earth there is the presence of a massive planet shaped weapon which has come to claim the stones or it will destroy all life. The President gets a shock when he learn of what is needed to save the planet.
Back to the regenerated person, it turns out to be Leeloo who makes an escape and falls into the taxi of Korban Dallas, played by Bruce Willis, he reluctantly agrees to help her as all...
Elemental or complicated?
Advantages: Colourful, wacky and amusing
Disadvantages: A bit too wacky, way too loooooong
...perhaps isn't necessary to learn more about him, but I just felt that I didn't have the chance to take breath before the action started - I didn't even get to grips with his name until half way through the film. Milla Jovovich gives a great performance as Leeloo. She really convinced me that she couldn't speak English anyway and I thought she did a fantastic job of looking terrified. She also looks amazing, very gamine and slender.
Then there are the more comical actors. Gary Oldman is Zorg, who visually looks like Morticia with a really bad lop-sided hairdo. Gary Oldman does evil very well, so he is in his element here, able to ham it up at every opportunity. Chris Tucker is also in his element as the rather strange Ruby Rhod, who is incredibly camp and talks in a high voice. Lee Evans pops in for a cameo role in which he gets to act daft...
