Photoshop Elements Drop Dead Lighting techniques

Advantages: Concise yet easy to follow, some impressive looking projects, well presented
Disadvantages: Special effects section, a little light (sic) on explanations

...One thing that often separates an average photo from a great one is the quality of light. Real life rarely serves up the sort of light we'd like (especially in the UK) and so we have to fall back on post processing and editing to tweak things. To the inexperienced user, this can be a bit of a hit and miss affair so I was very pleased to spot a copy of Photoshop Elements Drop Dead Lighting Techniques in the bookshop. The author Barry Huggins runs a multimedia and training consultancy at www.matrixtraining.com and has had his images used around the world so he ought to know a thing or two. The first thing that strikes you is the gorgeous presentation of the book. Ilex Press titles we have seen have always been impressive in this respect with superb quality brilliant white paper, excellent layout and flaps on the thick glossy cover...

Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0

Advantages: Great selection tools, pan & zoom in slide shows, price, printed manual
Disadvantages: file browser gone

...Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 aims to be everything the photographer wants for tweaking and fixing their images. Whilst the professionals prefer its more expensive big brother Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements isn't to be sniffed at and offers 80% of the power for 10% of the price whilst making many tasks much easier. The biggest surprise coming from version 3 is that the file browser has gone. Adobe, what are you thinking? Well, it's clear what they're thinking, they want you to use the Photoshop Album interface which merged in to Photoshop Elements with version 3. It's actually a very powerful interface and lets you import and catalogue your images with ease and flexibility but sometimes, you just want to get down and dirty with the file system and the loss of a file browser hurts. As a sort of apology, Adobe have added the ability to...

Elementary Photo-shopping

Advantages: Packed full of features, Great fun, Improve your digital images
Disadvantages: You need memory!!

...~~~~ Overview ~~~~ Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 is a software package used to manipulate and enhance digital images, whether they are from your digital camera, scanned images or pictures from the internet. I mainly use the software to improve the pictures I take with my digital camera; altering the contrast, brightness, colour saturation etc, and also cropping and enlarging images. I also regularly alter pictures for documents and other applications, to make them smaller by compressing the images so they don't take as much disk space up. The program is split into two main functions: ~ Editor: Allows photos and images to be enhanced and edited using a range of different tools. ~ Organiser: Allows your photos and images to be organised using several different methods. ~~~~ Editor ~~~~ The editor is very versatile, offering a whole...

Elementally Flawed

Advantages: Some well composed and catchy tracks
Disadvantages: Spoiled by Orzabal's personal agenda against his former band mate.

..., if you can ignore Orzabal?s obvious personal agenda, the five songs highlighted above in particular are definitely worth a spin. That said, its probably more one for the fans rather than the public at large, and despite the fact that it has its noteworthy moments, TFF?s best work clearly remained in the Eighties. Recommended with reservations. FULL TRACK LISTING 1. "Elemental" (5:30) 2. "Cold" (5:04) 3. "Break It Down Again" (4:31) 4. "Mr. Pessimist" (6:16) 5. "Dog's a Best Friend's Dog" (3:38) 6. "Fish out of Water" (5:07) 7. "Gas Giants" (2:40) 8. "Power" (5:50) 9. "Brian Wilson Said" (4:22) 10. "Goodnight Song" (3:53) © Hishyeness 2009 - Also on DooYoo...

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Advantages: Latest Release of Mac OS X; Cheap for those upgrading from Leopard
Disadvantages: No support for PPC processor (which is understandable, however)

...I purchased the Mac Box Set (and for those that have Tiger installed/have not got Leopard, this is what you'll need to purchase to get Snow Leopard, priced at around £129/$169. For those that have a PowerPC processor, if you don't already know Snow Leopard works only on Intel processors and I guess is the last part of the transition from PPC to Intel processors for Apple products. Snow Leopard won't work on PPC processors at all as its based on 64bit architecture (although works absolutely fine on 32bit architecture - Snow Leopard has been improved for 64bit architecture). Correct me if I'm at all wrong eitherway, but I don't know the ins and outs of what has changed with Snow Leopard although there are a few new added features in regards to the dock and interface changes. Expose is now integrated into the dock, when you click and hold...

Elemental or complicated?

Advantages: Colourful, wacky and amusing
Disadvantages: A bit too wacky, way too loooooong

...perhaps isn't necessary to learn more about him, but I just felt that I didn't have the chance to take breath before the action started - I didn't even get to grips with his name until half way through the film. Milla Jovovich gives a great performance as Leeloo. She really convinced me that she couldn't speak English anyway and I thought she did a fantastic job of looking terrified. She also looks amazing, very gamine and slender. Then there are the more comical actors. Gary Oldman is Zorg, who visually looks like Morticia with a really bad lop-sided hairdo. Gary Oldman does evil very well, so he is in his element here, able to ham it up at every opportunity. Chris Tucker is also in his element as the rather strange Ruby Rhod, who is incredibly camp and talks in a high voice. Lee Evans pops in for a cameo role in which he gets to act daft...

Review of The Fifth Element (DVD)

All the Elements of a Great Film

Advantages: Good story, Great acting and effects
Disadvantages: Aliens looked out of place and Zorg was annoying

...Although this film is set in 2257 we start 5000 years before this when a small temple in Egypt is visited by friendly aliens who explain about the 5 elements and the stone but then they are about to leave the 5th Element, the stone of life is broken and smashed. Back in the present, 2257, the hand of this statue has been found amongst some wreckage and with the technology which they have they re-grow the person who the hand belonged to. Also on Earth there is the presence of a massive planet shaped weapon which has come to claim the stones or it will destroy all life. The President gets a shock when he learn of what is needed to save the planet. Back to the regenerated person, it turns out to be Leeloo who makes an escape and falls into the taxi of Korban Dallas, played by Bruce Willis, he reluctantly agrees to help her as all...

Get your kicks from errr... Root 6

Advantages: Powerful, Portable, Looks like a space-gun
Disadvantages: Price,. Noise

...(with apologies to the Rolling Stones) It's not a Dustbuster(tm), because that's a trademark. And besides which, to put it in the same league as a Dustbuster(tm) would be unfair. No, the Dyson Root 6 should truly be called a handheld vacuum cleaner. "Why?" I hear you ask... well let me tell you. Dyson, as anyone that hasn't been living under a rock for the last 10 years will know, shot to fame with their revolutionary "bagless" Hoover(tm). Only you can't call it a Hoover(tm) because that's a trademark too. Bagless technology meant that there was no loss of power as the poor vacuum motor had to suck air through an increasing mass of dirt. It effectively meant that the suction power of a vacuum cleaner was increased. Not only that, but if you made the dust collection bin clear than you could see all of the dust and fluff whirling...

My Photoshop is Welsh?

Advantages: Fairly easy to use, and has all the features your likely to need for photo editing. Included tutorials. Technical Support.
Disadvantages: It doesn't always work first time! It isn't wildly fast unless you have a very powerful PC. Closing and saving files is a bit torturous.

...My anticipation was high as I loaded the Adobe Photoshop Elements software. After all, all the reviews had been good, and previous Photoshop software worked like a dream. However, my dreams came crashing down when I tried to run the edit option. I waited... and waited... but my system was stuck fast. The screen was frozen, and according to Task Manager, the software was not responding but was using up all my CPU! I tried everything to fix the problem, including reloading Photoshop, removing anything remotely resembling 'photo software', reinstalling Norton, updating windows XP, resetting my screen refresh rate, and reducing my hardware graphics accelerator. Then after a month of bemoaning this waste of money, I called Adobe....... A very helpful tech support person, talked me through some checks, and then asked something...

The Fifth Element review

Advantages: Good story, wacky costumes, gorgeous visuals
Disadvantages: None

...The Fifth Element is a sci-fi fantasy action film written and directed by Luc Besson (who also directed Leon) and stars Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm and Milla Jovovich. Set 300 years in the future, cab driver and former special forces soldier Korben Dallas (Willis) is going about his day when a woman comes crashing through the roof of his taxi and asks for help. He obliges, and loses the heat that were following her. He soon finds out that she is the fifth element, a perfect being who has been sent here to save the universe. Every 5000 years, when the planets are in alignment, a great evil appears, and will kill every living thing it comes across. So the fifth element, along with the other four elements (which are stones with lines carved into them) have to travel to a special site in Egypt which focuses their power...
