Together with the Music Theory for Young Children books, the Poco Piano For Young Children series leads the child from the very beginning to grade 1 level. Poco Piano for Young Children includes exercises to help the child develop technique, rhythm and reading, and it involves the child in activities such as pasting, colouring, tracing, circling and clapping. Book 3 introduces the concepts of key, key signature, scales, triads, tones and semitones in a novel and exciting way: each key is a group of characters or objects with note-names (i.e. a band, a birthday party, a clothes-line with garments). Certain notes belong, while all other notes (accidentals) are outsiders. Transposition is a natural outcome of this concept, with a tune moving from one group to another. The child masters eight new notes (up to High G and down to Low F), which facilitates the playing of more adventurous repertoire. The semiquaver, semiquaver rest, dotted crotchet and dotted quaver are introduced, and tempo markings are now in Italian. As in the previous two books, ensemble-playing is encouraged. ... less

Poco Piano for Young Children includes exercises to help the child develop technique, rhythm and reading, and it involves the child in activities such as pasting, colouring, tracing, circling and clapping. Book 1 introduces the child to the keyboard, staves, clefs, simple time signatures, note values and rests. Reading encompasses notes to a 5th above and a 5th below Middle C. The notes A and E are introduced first, played by a braced 3rd finger of each hand. This encourages free movement of the whole arm from the shoulder, and develops a natural, balanced hand position, before the 5-finger position is gradually mastered. The first line of the treble stave and the fifth line of the bass stave are highlighted, and further lines are similarly treated as the child learns more notes. Staccato, slurs, ties, upbeats and repeat signs are all experienced in Book 1. Tempo and dynamic markings encourage musical playing, and are in English, in order to avoid "knowledge overload". ... less

Advantages: shop from home
Disadvantages: need to buy lots of books
...more times in the first year of you becoming a member. Books For Children insist that you order six times. I haven?t yet ordered a second time so I still have my fingers crossed that the service will be good. One good advantage of book clubs is that you can do everything from the comfort of your own home!!!

Who would decide which books children could read?
Advantages: More information on books could help parents make informed decisons.
Disadvantages: Limiting which books children can read will limit the number of children that do read.
...I suggested this topic after reading several articles suggesting that certain children's books should be banned as too frightening. I have no intention whatsoever of staying within the word limit here - so my review will not be in the running for prizes - but I think this is a very interesting topic.
My children are quite young - ages 4 and 7. As such I feel that I have every right to censor...

Advantages: Good range of books - age appropriate
Disadvantages: Very bad customer service & delivery times
...The first time I joined Books For Children was when my daughter was 2. I joined after receiving a leaflet through the post. The special introductory offer was for 4 or 5 books at 50p each + children's surprise parcel of books and a child's rucksack. Excellent!
