Driver's Eye View: Rayners Lane to Cockfosters, Acton Town to Heathrow Narrated by Rob Curling Because the Uxbridge branch is covered by our Metropolitan Main Line production, this Piccadilly Driver's eye view begins at Rayners Lane - in the reversing siding. Our 1973 stock train, recently refurbished to look like new, takes you right through the centre of the capital and out into the North London suburbs. Emerging from tunnel at Arnos Grove our train continues to Cockfosters in Hertfordshire. The section between ActonTown and Hammersmith is unique in being the only tube line to feature express running - leaving the parallel District line to provide the stopping service... We then go back to Acton Town and join another 1973 stock train for a drivers's eye view of the Heathrow Airport branch. This line, much of which was built by the District Railway, has another unique feature for a tube line, a quaduple track section from Acton Town to Northfields. As well as seeing four closed stations from the driver's cab we also pay a visit to Aldwych, the terminus of the short branch which ran from Holborn but closed in 1994. If you ever wondered about the chequered history of this anacronistic branch, the historical and contemporary narrative will explain all. Running time - 105 minutes DVD only ... less

Like Online's other titles about London Underground, this recording doesn't have talking heads or boring featureless cab-rides in tunnels. Using film taken by competent Underground enthusiasts, it shows many lines and stations in the mid-1950s onwards. It's a riot of red trains, both tube cars and surface line stock. Starting at Farringdon - esteemed tour train with L44 passes - and Met loco number 16 follows it up to take over at New Cross Gate. Moving to Baker Street, a general study of electric trains running from there. 'T' stock appears at several stations, 'O', 'P' and 'F' stock trains are seen passing. A visit to Neasden features 'E' class, L46, L44 - L53, also the new Pannier tanks. A trip to Stanmore reveals the practice of including 'standard stock', used as trailers with 1938 tube cars. At Northwood Hills, steam trains for Marylebone still hurry by, mixed in with new DMU's. The well known steam to electric changeover is seen once again at Rickmansworth. Chesham saw its last steam train and 'T' stock appears. The Aylesbury LT service is briefly featured and the tip workings to Croxley is filmed. Amongst the red trains at Acton Town can be seen the gleaming aluminium 1956 stock on demonstration runs. Also at Acton Town, the quaint single car shuttle to South Acton is seen in detail, the red Q23 car contrasting with the new style trains. Other trains pass on the nearby North London line. 'Standard stock' on the Piccadilly line is next prior to a visit to the East London line, various Underground trains of all types are seen through the damp, gloomy stations and tunnels, back in the 1950s and 60s. Oerlikon sets of the LNWR share tracks with jointly-owned tube stock near Harrow and Wealdstone, filmed in the late 1920s. We finish our coverage at Ongar, however a more detailed review of the Ongar branch can be seen in another DVD in this series, Lost Lines Around London. ... less

Double disc edition: Two programmes, two DVDs. Disc 1: District Line - Past (50 Minutes) This traces the history of the line from its opening in 1868, through to electrification in the early part of the 20th century, and up to the present day. An archive film, taken in 1930, gives us a cab ride from West Kensington to Acton Town, and beyond, at the time when extra tracks were being laid for the Piccadilly Line extension. We see early electric rolling stock in use, most with American style clerestory roofs. Later we see Q stock, R stock, and CO/CP stock in service. There is film of the short South Acton branch that closed in 1959. Other items included are the final tours with the CO/CP and R stocks, and "Steam on the District" in 1993, using pannier tank L99, backed up with electric locomotive "Sarah Siddons". Disc 2: District Line - Present (100 Minutes) The second disc deals with the District Line today. It is 40 miles long, and serves 60 stations, carrying a total of 600,000 passengers every weekday. We start with the Edgware Road to Wimbledon service, which is operated with C stock. Then we view the Olympia, Richmond, and Ealing branches, which are operated by a fleet of 75 D stock trains. Finally, we follow the line from Upminster, through central London, to Earls Court, the hub of the line. The architecture of the stations on route is extensively featured, and an interesting variety of National Rail rolling stock is shown where the two interconnect. ... less

This double album covers railway activity on the West Coast Main Line and some of its connecting services over a period of more than 30 years. Disc One, which runs for 67 minutes, features the 1970s and 1980s, much of it filmed at principal stations and covering a wide variety of trains. Whilst electric locomotive haulage is much in evidence, many classes of diesel locos, DMUs, EMUs and freight are covered, and even tube trains on the Bakerloo Line which paralleled the main line between Queen's Park and Watford, using the DC tracks. Apart from stations on the main route, between Euston and Glasgow, such as Crewe, Preston and Carlisle, visits are made to Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton, Chester, Liverpool and Manchester Piccadilly. A major feature shows intense activity at Glasgow Central in 1988, including several classes of EMU and DMU in Strathclyde orange livery. We also see glimpses of the APT prototypes in action. On Disc Two (52 minutes) the story continues further into the era of sectorisation and privatisation of British Rail during the 1990s, including the Virgin and Silverlink franchises. The highlights of a cab ride from Euston to Stafford are included. Finally, bringing the story up to date, we see the entry into service of the first of the class 334 EMUs in the Glasgow area, and the initial introduction of Pendolinos and Desiros to the West Coast route. ... less

Dover Priory Train Station
Advantages: recently refurbished, nice cafe
Disadvantages: in a grotty area of Dover town
...History
Dover Priory Train Station was first opened on 22 July 1861. It was originally called Dover Town but was renamed Dover Priory in 1863. The name Dover Priory was taken from the remains of St Martins Priory which was situated close to the station. Dover Priory Train Station suffered greatly during the war and was actually the first place in Dover that was bombed.

...PICCADILLY GARDENS
For the last four years I have driven past a sign that looks rather like a railway sign with the words 'Piccadilly Gardens' on as I have visited my local Boothes supermarket.
And, to be honest, had not taken much notice of it.
Two weeks ago, my garden was looking in need of a little tender loving care and as I passed the sign I noticed there was an extra sign...

Perfect for a quick coffee before boarding the train
Advantages: Range of produce, Quality of Coffee, Location
Disadvantages: Speed of Service
...This particular Costa Coffee is in an ideal location for purchasing a quick cuppa' before boarding your train at Manchester's main mainline station. Although the shop is located on the main concourse, it is off to one side which means that you have the option for some piece and quiet should you have the time to sit down. The range provided by Costa is, in my opinion, as good as any on the station...
