Pickering Castle, North Yorkshire
Advantages: Lots of history, quite well preserved
Disadvantages: Admission charges
...Pickering Castle can be found just outside the town centre of Pickering, a quaint little market town on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It is clearly sign posted from the middle of the town, but be warned when I visited here a few weeks ago some prankster had turned around the sign and I went trudging off along the road towards Malton (on foot) for about a mile in completely the wrong direction.
I did eventually find the castle, although even though the land around here is quite flat it is not, unlike most castles visible from afar. Pickering Castle is located just to the north of the town centre, just beyond the point where a modern post-war housing estate ends.
The castle is a typical motte and bailey style fortification, characterised by a large mound of earth (the motte) on which the castle stands. This is...

Surf and Turf in the Yorkshire Dales
Advantages: Good accomodation, really good food.
Disadvantages: A couple - see the review
...Firstly I have to say when writing this I was wondering whether I was rating a pub, a restaurant, a hotel or the package as a whole. The place itself describes itself as a boutique hotel but is perhaps better known for its food and is clearly in the shell of a pub. I decided on my experience as a whole.
The Heifer is located in Wensleydale, the valley of the River Ure, itself in the Yorkshire Dales national park. It can be found in the village of West Witton located between the market towns of Leyburn and Hawes with Aysgarth and its falls (the filming location for the tussle between Robin and Little John in the film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves) just down the road. The area is a good base for all the sights and walking this area offers.
The inn has 9 rooms. Each is individually themed and a little unique in what it does and doesn...

Yorkshire's White Horse
Advantages: Interesting to see, nice setting
Disadvantages: Only dates from 19th century
...For many years my brother lived in Wiltshire under the shadow of a white horse carved into the limestone hillside above Westbury. I was always fascinated by this figure so when I discovered that there was a similar white horse in North Yorkshire within a day trip of where I live it became a place that I wanted to see.
There are many examples of figures of horses cut into the landscape in England but in northern England they are quite rare and the one at Kilburn in North Yorkshire is the most northerly such example in Britain. The practice of carving white horses and occasionally other figures into the landscape dates back to prehistoric times, the reasons behind their creation vary but many have religious origins. There is even an official name for the creation and study of these horses called "leucippotomy".

Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales
Advantages: Rich in history, Beautiful countryside, Georgian architecture
Disadvantages: Difficult and expensive to park
..."Richmond is a town unlike others, a place unique, rich in relics of the past. It is too good to be passed by." Alfred Wainwright.
Richmond is a small market town in North Yorkshire, on the edge of the Dales, and if you believe what you read in Lonely Planet guides, then it is one of the great undiscovered towns of England as far as visitors are concerned. This might be a little odd when you consider the popularity of the Dales and that the proximity of the town to the A1 (just 4 miles away) makes it easily accessible as a day trip location from a large part of the North East and Yorkshire. Indeed, I travelled down from Newcastle for the day (lured by the promise of a living history event) and it took me little more than an hour to find the town, although it unfortunately felt like it took me the same amount of time to find...

North Yorkshire Moors Railway - Pullman Dining
Advantages: Fantastic Meal whilst having a great train ride - a totally different experience
Disadvantages: A long way from where we live
...
The end of the road for us was Pickering in North Yorkshire. It's a lovely little village with quaint shops and a railway where steam trains still run. I know Pickering fairly well because in my teens I used to go camping a lot with a musical group that I belonged to at a place called Levisham which is about 5 miles away from Pickering.
Here they took us into a pub - well when I say they took us in - I really mean - she took us because he had disappeared the second we got out of the car. I had absolutely no idea where he had gone and she wouldn't tell me.
Then I saw him coming out of the Railway Station - I was totally confused. Come on then drink up he said - the train is ready for us.
Yes, you've got it we were having our meal on an old steam train whilst travelling through the North Yorkshire Moors. Its called Pullman Dining...

Beck Hole - A Place Where Time Stands Still!
Advantages: Beautiful Little Village
Disadvantages: Difficult To Get There Without A Car
...Beck Hole is a tiny Village, or technically speaking, a Hamlet, in North Yorkshire. It lies at the bottom of a small Valley, in a tranquil setting close to the River Esk. It is located 9 miles South-East of Whitby between the Villages of Grosmont and Goathland. It is clearly sign posted from the A170, which is the main Pickering to Whitby Road.
Nearby Goathland is an amazing place to visit in its own right whilst in the area and should not be overlooked. It has recently found fame, and a whole entourage of tour buses and coaches to accompany this fame, due to the fact that it is the place where the TV series Heartbeat is filmed, but anyway let's get back to Beck Hole, the subject of this review.
Fortunately Beck Hole lies a little further down the single track road from Goathland, a couple of miles or so, on roads which are...

The Forbidden Corner; Disneyland, Yorkshire
Advantages: Lots of fun and adventure
Disadvantages: could be in trouble if you have a week bladder
...***Please note my review is of a specific attraction "The Forbidden Corner" in North Yorkshire and not a review on Yorkshire as a whole. I have posted the review here for now as there seems to be a hitch with the product listing***
I was first made aware of The Forbidden Corner after my brother and his girlfriend returned following a visit one day this summer. They seemed incredibly mesmerised by the place, however, upon probing them for a detailed explanation of exactly what The Forbidden Corner was I was delivered only excited remarks about clues & riddles, secret passages and sleeping giants. The word enchanting was overused to an unnatural extent in their accounts, and after both failing miserably to provide me with a concrete answer they just suggested it was probably best if I visit the place for myself.

Ahhh! Yorkshire
Advantages: Can use just one. Authentic taste
Disadvantages: Not really big enough for my liking and not the same as home-made!
...Having a fussy eater as a son means that I've become a little more "experimental" in the food that's available in the house. In desperation I've tried products that I wouldn't have dreamed of buying before having children. Sometimes this is just to offer variety, other times it's for convenience.
Yorkshire puds have to be one of the easiest things to make. There's nothing fancy in the batter and, when you're cooking a roast it's no hassle to slip a tray in the top oven. However, upon discovering that my son actually liked these and having had little success in freezing home-made pies I decided to try some of the ready-made versions so that, when offering my son a roast mid-week (made from a roast that my husband and I have most likely shared the night before) I can also offer a pud alongside.

Prisoner X reporting for duty, Sir!

According to the map leaflet we were given on entering the former Prisoner of War camp, there are 33 huts. Be prepared for plenty of walking, as although there are plenty of huts to go in there are few seats (particularly if it is raining) other than in the coffee shop and if you go when the schools are visiting expect the huts, coffee shop, ice...

Ideal base for the Delights of N. Yorkshire
Advantages: peaceful, but close to the National parks, Whitby, Scarborough, and Pickering
Disadvantages: if self catering and cooking your own, best to bring supplies with you
...provisions and bring a torch just in case! Across from the site is a pub with ample parking and it serves meals, welcoming families. There is a second similar sort of pub in the village itself as well, so you can eat out locally with a bit of variety!
~~~Is there actually anything to do?~~~~
This is not to say we sent the entire time cow and sheep gazing and going hiking. Indeed not! The village is quite close to the town of Pickering, which is a historic market town full of charm. While it was pleasant to gaze upon and has plenty of shops, the real draw here is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. After picking up a brochure from the campsite office, we knew when the trains began running, and got up to catch on of the earlier trains on an all day ride ticket. This is a heritage steam railway that not only restores and runs the trains, but...
