Pickwick Hotel, San Francisco

Advantages: Cheap, Convenient
Disadvantages: Prehaps too far from Fishermans Wharf if only a stop-over break?

...I stayed at the Pickwick with 3 friends in April 2007. It's a very pleasant hotel situated within walking distance of the cable car turnaround and Union Square, and can't be faulted for it's price given the fairly central location for shopping/business. It's probably about 20 minutes to Fishermans Wharf via cable car from here. The general area felt safe at night, it was very, very quiet in terms of people being around - probably due to the fact that most surrounding buildings were retail/office space. There were a few homeless people near the hotel, but having visited many cities on our US tour, it's pretty obvious that San Francisco is one of the worst hit places. It seems that someone wants a dollar every 50 yards in San Francisco. The room which we had was situated at the rear of the building away from the road, so was quiet...

Best rate in town

Advantages: Central location
Disadvantages: No air-conditioner in room

...I stayed here with my mom for 1 night in Luzern (July 2006) and we were both happy with the room. Before spending a night in Luzern, we have stayed in Geneva, Montreux and Interlaken (4 different hotels throughout our stay in Switzerland). We paid the least for our room in Luzern and yet it's better than the most expensive one we paid for. Everything in Switzerland is expensive and therefore we wanted to minimise hotel expenses. Surprisingly, a double-room ensuite in Hotel Pickwick is only CHF 125 ! (Hotel Des Alpes is next door and it's almost double this rate). After I booked a double room with Hotel Pickwick, I searched for reviews online and someone mentioned that no towel is provided + services not great. - Fyi, I paid CHF 140 for a pension in Montreux and CHF 135 for a double room ensuite with air conditioning in old town...

Three For All - If You Like Popsy/Bluesy/Jazz

Advantages: Great Original Style of this little known band

...Runner Beans are a great crop to grow in the garden . They are a cheap and easy way of feeding the family with a fresh and nutritional veg. The plants are easy to grow in a garden , in tubs or on an allotment - and no special skills or tools are needed . They are not hardy and the biggest enemies are slugs and frosty weather . Runner beans will tolerate neither very well . They are legumes . That is to say they manufacture their own nitrogen and as such will leave the soil in better condition than they found it ! The plants grow to around eight feet in height ( unless you select a dwarf variety such as Pickwick ) and make a splendid sight in any garden , when in full flower. Unsettling

Advantages: Cathedral, old town, plenty to keep you occupied
Disadvantages: I just didn't feel at home

.../Irish pubs (try Mr Pickwicks or Reilly's), which is always a bonus for expats on their travels! However, if FC Basel are playing at home, then you are advised to take care around the pubs, as the Basel hooligans who have been banned from the new stadium tend to congregate there and look for trouble with passing foreigners. I saw this at first hand after the Intertoto Cup match between Basel and Aston Villa in August, and had to take cover at the back of Mr Pickwick's as the Swiss riot police moved on the hooligans. The main squares in the city are Claraplatz and Barfusserplatz, and the Marktplatz is also worth a look, firstly for the market (as the name suggests) but also to see the brightly-painted facade and courtyard of the Rathaus (town hall). A visit to the Munster (cathedral) is well worth it - this was originally built by the Holy Roman...
