Being a free game from the manufacturers, OOOGameprom, you may not expect much from it...but low and behold, you'll soon find yourself addicted. The old ones are the best and all that! Now, unless you've had your head in the sand forever then you'll all know the concept of pinball. Using the paddles at the bottom of the table to smack the ball around in an attempt to collect points by hitting various parts of the table or making the ball travel in various spaces. ...Now I've never played any of the Metroid Prime series before, so getting this pinball game was a bit of a gamble as I had no idea if I'd like the concept. However, I figured that a pinball game is a pinball game and there's not much they could do to it that would make me really dislike it. The most realistic pinball game ever

Advantages: Very realistic, smooth animation
Disadvantages: Not quite the real thing

...Pinball games on the PC tend to be of very poor quality and very unrealistic. The majority boast very good graphics and quick gameplay but this is expected when there is not much animation involved. However, most tend to offer very poor gameplay but not in the case of ProPinball of which there are 4 versions. I have only played the first 2 versions (The Web and TimeShock which are both available on budget as a dual pack). Both games are graphically superb and features excellent sound effects and very good background music which can be turned on/off. A nice touch is the option of changing table angles and allowing the user to play the game at a chosen screen resolution - personally I play at the full 1024 x 768 full colour screen mode. Good sound and graphics does not mean the game is good but in the case of Pro Pinball...

...THE GAME Pokemon Pinball is a good pinball game for anyone. You don't need to like Pokemon as the pinball will keep you entertained for hours. Everyone knows what pinball is, but if there is anyone that doesn't I will explain it anyway. You simply have two flippers situated at the bottom of the screen, and 1 or two near the top. You bash the ball around with the flippers to hit the objects and gain points. The idea of the Pokemon Pinball game is to bash the ball to certain areas of the pinball table to enable you to catch the 150 Pokemon. What a load of (pin)balls

Advantages: Lots of tables and skills levels to work though, addictive.
Disadvantages: PS buttons take a bashing.

...I was out getting some shopping and glancing round the PS2 shelves when the Pinball Classics cover caught my eye (and yes, it was in a sale, and yes, I bought it on a whim). It's a colourful cover and states that Gottlieb Pinball Classics is "The most accurate simulation of all time" - a bold claim indeed. It has a 3+ rating meaning that even young ones can have a go and compete with us oldies who remember trying the real pinball tables. Brief summary. The game contains accurate reproductions of all the classic tables, including the real sounds captured from the actual tables themselves, created by the famous Gottlieb Company over the past 70 years. Pinball with Pokemon is this a good idea

Advantages: Polished, quick and invloved.
Disadvantages: No definitive end to aim for, just high scoring.

...Well, yes! it is. Even if you want to avoid the other Pokemon stuff out there, this game stand on its own merit as an excellent portable pinball simulation. You get two main tables (red or blue), but each table has at least 3 (I may find more!) sub games/tables within them. It smacks of that Japanese quirkyness that makes Pokemon so appealing worldwide, the subgames involve things from hitting seals with your ball as they pop out of the water to bouncing the ball between gravestones to hit ghosts. The ball physics are excellent and you eventually become adept at hitting specific targets. Sound is great, colour use is good, although the game works and plays just as well on an old b/w gameboy. This is the one Gmaeboy game of recent years I would take away on holiday with me in the sure knowledge I would not be bored of it after...
