Pioneer DEH4000UB Fantastic, a real bargain if you shop around.

I have never been impressed with the BMW stereo (Phillips), and assumed that perhaps the speakers were as much to blame as the head unit. I toyed with the idea of fitting a CD multi player in the boot, but they can be very expensive. Since I bought my car in 2000, I have just had a bog standard radio cassette fitted, and either plugged in my portable CD player when I wanted to play CD's. When you receive a call, the stereo automatically adjusts to telephone mode and, if you want it to, answers the call for you. The phone call is then played through your car speaker system. The stereo does come with a remote control, which I found a bit pointless, seeing as the stereo is right in front of you. ...A month or so ago I purchased a new car, MK4 VW Golf 1.9 TDI. Not being brand new, I wanted to make some changes to make it feel more like mine. First thing I noticed was the out-dated sound system in the car. Despite being a 51 reg, it came with a tape deck of all things and a 6-disc CD changer. Ugly, boring and outdated. I wanted something a bit snazzier. I had seen other Golfs with single DIN units, meaning there was a horrible gap in the dash board. Opting for double-din was the only logical choice. Most double din units are expensive and incorporate a DVD player or sat nav of some sort. I wasn't after that, just something to play MP3 CD's and the radio. ...I have had many in-car head units, Sony, Kenwood and various other Pioneer models but this model does everything i need from a head unit. I have had this for about 4 years now, and is frankly head and shoulders above most head units i have had before. You don't now need to spend £200 - £300 on a head unit, and thankfully prices have come down significantly in the last few years and an equivalent model should now set you back about £150. My current set up comprises of Pioneer DEH-P7500MP head unit, Kenwood amp 60 x 2 driving a pair of pioneer 6.5" speakers on rear shelf, an audison amp 220w x 1 driving a 10" Pioneer sealed sub box in the boot and factory fit Ford speakers driven by internal amp (50 x 4) on head unit. Pioneer DEH-3130R - What a blast

Advantages: So many functions, great quality sound
Disadvantages: Looks a little dull

...Firstly my Pioneer CD player is the DEH-3130R slightly different to the category its in but i think mine is just the older version of this. I've had this system for about 2 years now and have had a few problems with it. It was even sent back to Pioneer with a fault however it turns out that it was my car electrics that was causing the problem and there was absolutely nothing wrong with the CD player in the first place. So do not let my bad experience deter you. Other than this i have no complaints with this at all. I did have this installed at Halfords for me as it saved me a job, but i have taken it out myself since and have checked out the instruction manual which is clear and detailed so i don't think initial installation is too difficult.
