I wanna a Pisa that erection!
Advantages: Breath taking views, easy to get to and around
Disadvantages: Them damn bicycles
...Last Wednesday a few of my work colleagues and I went along to Pisa for the day, after spotting a bargain on the Ryanair website which involved us paying 2p per ticket with Ryanair and £20 in Airport Tax. Having never been to before this was a first taste of Italy for me and I was especially looking forward to seeing the Leaning Tower in all its glory
Pisa is located in Tuscany, still surrounded by its 12-century City Walls on the north bank of the river Arno with just over 100,000 inhabitants. The centre of Pisa is easily accessible from Galileo Galilei Airport, which is about a mile away from the City Centre. The Airport itself has numerous facilities including a Bureau de Change, Cash machine's and ATM's as well as car hire centres, restaurants, café's and bars and a few shops. To get from the Airport to the centre of Pisa we...

Nightmare Navigation but Perfect Pizzas
Advantages: It's Italy, so you can expect good weather, nice people and amazing food, plus a well located airport served by budget carriers
Disadvantages: There's very little to do there
...of is that very few things, even, say, croissants, are as plain as they appear. If there’s no coating like chocolate on the outside, there usually will be something – again, chocolate or a vanilla cream, inside. For other meals, Pisa has plenty of restaurants. For take away snacks try the university area which also has the advantage of lower, student-aimed prices. Even by-the-slice pizza is amazing in this city. For a sit down meal, try near the tower. Although it’s the most touristy area, it also has the best prices since each restaurant has a lot of competition. There are set menus that offer good value if you like the food on them, but the a la carte ones still offer low prices. Being Italy, pasta and pizza, plus various meat and fish dishes are a good bet, not forgetting gelato for pudding. Many establishments have...

Tuscany's 'other' city.
Advantages: interesting, tower, cathedral
Disadvantages: a bit dull
...Without being too cruel, I was fortunate enough to spend 2 days in Pisa, which was probably about 1.5 days too many! Honestly, though, it is a pleasant enough city, further downstream of the Arno from Florence and about an hour away by train.
Home to an impressive and well-established University, Pisa has young population, heavily influenced by the student population. Of course she is most famous for the sights on the Campo dei Miracoli, the ubiquitous Tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistry and a couple of museums.
The tower itself is one of those things which is more impressive at close sight, I found it so anyway. It is going to reopen this year, possibly before the summer, after years and years of attempting to prop it up. I'm not entirely sure I'd want to venture up, but apparently it was 'tested' on groups of Italian students...

Nothing To See Move On
Advantages: Some attractions, that tower
Disadvantages: Compared to many Italian cities not that much 2C
...Pisa has a leaning tower. You must have heard of it. But is there anything else to see to make a visit to Pisa worthwhile?
The problem with many cities you might visit in Italy is that there is simply too much to do in one day. Often places of interest within a city are a long distance apart necessitating a long walk or fraught taxi journey during which you miss many sites and views.
Pisa however has all its main attractions including the leaning tower in an area no more than 300 metres by 150 metres. You have to say that the leaning tower itself is an extraordinary site. Whilst it is one the most familiar and enduring images of Italy it is also breathtaking the first time you actually see it.
Within the small area mentioned there are other historical buildings. Unfortunately during our visit at the end of 1999 many of these...

More than just a tower
Advantages: Beautiful tuscan city
Disadvantages: None
...the perfect Italian experience.
You can reach Pisa by air from stanstead with Ryanair www.ryanair.com.
You can also get there from other areas of Italy by Italy's excellent (and cheap) rail network. (Florence is an hour away- six euro!)
There are many good value hotels here but we found a great campsite (25 euro for a family) with swimming pool, restaurant, children's play area and bungalows for hire.
I prefer to keep it short and sweet so please don't say "You could write more". If you have any questions about pisa please mail me. I only write for fun - I don't need blue dots!...

Pisa was good for a city break
Advantages: Easy to get to, good base for a few days
Disadvantages: Crowded with Tourists, touts selling cheap watches
...Ryanair offered 99p flights, so we decided to have a 4 day break in Pisa. We arrived at Pisa airport which was only a mile out of town. I expected to find leaflets packed with info at the airport - but no. So we wandered outside and found the bus stop & I had already found out that is was apparently easy to get a bus into the centre. We tried to buy a ticket from a machine, but it wouldn't give us tickets so we asked the driver of a bus that drew up and he tried to help & had a problem, so he sold us a couple of tickets for 1.50 Euros. I was starting to feel that Italy didn't really want Tourists to find out anything! Anyway we saw
a sign to our hotel, hopped off the bus and a few yards down the road was the hotel. They were brilliant, they checked us in at once- at 10am in the morning! There were signs all over Pisa to...

A fantastic afternoon - nothing more
Advantages: You can take the famous photo where you appear to be holding up the tower
Disadvantages: Random Italians come up to you trying to push dodgy Sony stuff
...I won't insult your intelligence by telling you what the main attraction at Pisa is. Well, actually I have to mention it to get some points across..
The tower is, of course, breathtaking. White, leaning over so far you convince yourself it's about to topple, perfectly constructed. Unfortunately, at the moment it also has two enormous steel cables holding it up (which sort of destroy the romantic illusion) plus a building site all the way around. They're trying to stabilise it, and stop it falling over and destroying all the touristy stalls opposite - all of which is well and good, but as I say, it makes for slightly less impressive photos.
What else is there to do? Well, you can look at the cathedral and the baptistery, which along with some museums and the tower occupy the rather too perfect piazza to the north of the town...

TOO MUCH TO HANDLE ON YE OLDE LOVE HANDLES
Advantages: See Op
Disadvantages: See Op
...would you love to bathe in?
That would have to be champagne, just for the pure extravagance if it all.
4. Which piece of fruit are you and why?
Mango, exotic, sweet and mouth wateringly tasty.
5. What is your most hated food that you wish had never existed?
I have two
Polenta, I tasted this for the first and last time while attending an AGM in Pisa Italy. I had what the waiter recommended. Let?s just say the only tip he got from me was to never make recommendations ever again.
Haggis, due to living and being educated in Scotland for some of my childhood, I was unable to get away from the school meals, which often consisted of haggis followed shortly by semolina?. Arghhhh tis was hell.
6. If you were going on a long journey and could only take one sweet with you, what would it be?
Sherbet lemons just the thought...

Rent a holiday villa
Advantages: Free issue - 404 pages! WOW!
Disadvantages: Its all Adverts - except for........
...the street, very positive, no downsides to any of the articles and very "I want to go!" stuff.
Lets have a look at what the magazine is really trying to achieve.
Get you to rent a villa.
If you have an idea of where you want to go - use the index on the villafinder at the front, nicely colour coded. Its not in alphabetical order. It starts at Portugal/Madeira and works its way around the Med, drops in on Croatia, Bulgaria, and Slovenia. It then looks at Lakes and Mountain zones, North Africa and then the rest of the World. This magazine goes everywhere! At the start of every section is a one page editorial about the region. There is a hand drawn map in pastel shades and a couple of photographs. Predictably the Leaning Tower of Pisa for Italy! The write up is quite bland but it has a nice feel to it. There is very little real info there...
