Beautiful Location, Expensive Hotel

Advantages: Excellent location with beautiful views over the loch
Disadvantages: Food and drink is very expensive

.... The village of Kinloch Rannoch is around 20 miles outside of the small town of Pitlochry and the City of Perth is about 45 miles away. Kinloch Rannoch really is in the middle of nowhere so as you can imagine the road to get there is very long, narrow and winding so you need to take your time. However, the scenery is beautiful so you will want to take your time anyway! >>>>The Hotel<<<< The hotel is a 19th century former shooting lodge and is cream in colour with lots of character. When we first went inside my first thoughts were that the décor was a bit old fashioned, but this did not put me off. However I think it would be a whole lot nicer if it was tidied up a bit and given a fresh lick of paint in certain places. For example in a couple of parts of the hotel the carpet looked a bit worn and the paintwork was peeling. We found...

Moulins Inn, nr Pitlochry

Advantages: An Amazing Inn
Disadvantages: A little off the normal tourist track

...Picture a bleak February day in the Highlands. Snow capped mountains, a wind sharp enough to cut granite, and the only signs of life sheep huddling behind stone walls and checking their thermometers. We had driven over from near Dundee, through Blairgowrie and over the mountain to Pitlochry via Strathardle, but as we descended off the moor by pure chance, we spotted the Moulins Inn, about a mile out of the town centre. Lunchtime and frostbite and impulse made us stop. A roaring peat fire, a great welcome from those present and a meal to die for, accompanied by a modest number of pints of Old Redemption - a beer brewed in the micro brewery behind the Inn and unavailable anywhere else. The Moulins made a lasting impression on four very weary travellers and we have returned many times since, in both summer and winter. If you are going...

See fish on a ladder

Advantages: A good base for touring the area
Disadvantages: I can't think of any

...Pitlochry is an ideal place to either stop overnight on your tour of Scotland or as a base for exploring the surrounding area. Pitlochry itself is a small town with a theatre where there is a summer festival each year. There is a dam with splendid views from the top and a visitor’s centre, which gives an insight into how the whole thing works. There is also a viewing chamber where you can watch salmon make their way up the fish ladder to spawn in Loch Faskally. A fish ladder, for those of you who don’t know, is a series of chambers full of water set side by side with each higher than the preceding one. Each chamber is linked with those either side by a narrow gap in the chamber wall so that the salmon can swim up through each chamber in turn and out at the top, thus climbing up past the dam. To the east of Pitlochry is...

Edradour- The Water of Life

Advantages: Small and personal tours, whiskey tasting!
Disadvantages: Have to be careful with the tasting if you are driving!

...Hidden in a glen above Pitlochry in the Southern Highlands of Scotland sits an unlikely gem in the brilliant jewels of Britain. Here stands, as it has for nearly 170 years, the smallest distillery in Scotland, perhaps the smallest legal distillery on Earth! Edradour has a history and tradition that continues to flourish. History and process of Whiskey Making: (I find this history very interesting!) It is unclear when the first Scotch whisky was distilled. However, the ancient Celts soon gave this extraordinary drink the name- ?uisge beatha? - which in Gaelic means ?water of life?. Anyone who has had at least a ?wee dram? can testify to the life it ignites in them. In 1707, whisky production was pushed underground in order for the distillers to escape the high taxation on malt and whisky that the new government had imposed...

A different kind of trip to the theatre .

Advantages: Good Value , lovely setting , handy for the theatre , great food
Disadvantages: None for me

...Kingston-Upon-Hull , or as it is usually known locally Hull , is situated on the north bank of the River Humber in the county of East Yorkshire . If you are visiting the City from the south you will find the Humber Bridge provides much quicker access than of old . However there is a toll . The City itself has numerous , free museums , the Ferens Art Gallery , the Deep ( pay to enter ) , a few new shopping centres ( the St. Stephens project still being under construction ) and a couple of theatres ( Hull Truck and the New theatre ) If you decide to visit check out via the local tourist office . If you are looking for a centrally based place to stay , look no further than the Kingston Theatre Hotel . If you just want a good place to pop in , and wine and dine , then this is also the place for you . ~~~~~~~~~~~~ A little bit...

A THEATRE WITH A VIEW

Advantages: Open air Theatre does not come any better.
Disadvantages: Those hard seats, do not forget the cushions.

...OPEN AIR THEATRE AT ITS VERY BEST. The Minack Theatre is located next to Porthcurno Bay which is just off the B3315 between Lands End and Penzance. For persons like me who do not drive, there are Scheduled Bus Services from Penzance. the 300 and the 1A which both stop in Porthcurno Valley, the theatre is a further 400 meter walk up a steep hill. For full details of the Events at the Minack and further pictures visit its own web site WWW.MINACK.COM The Theatre was built, honed out of the rocks by a young woman ROWENA CADE with the only help being from the families gardener. It is now a 750 seat theatre, staging a wide range of events. Shakespear , what better setting for the Tempest than a cliff side setting. Opera, Drama, Musicals they are all there. We have visited the Minack for several Plays...

The Marlowe Theatre

Advantages: Great range of shows, nice layout, good facilities
Disadvantages: None

...About The Marlowe Theatre The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury was redeveloped in 2005 and currently it is spread across three floors. Inside, there are two auditoriums, one of which has 1,200 seats and the other one has around 200 seats. Also inside is a bar on each of the three floors, a café and a hospitality suite. Where Is The Theatre Located The Marlowe Theatre is at the lower end of the City centre and is easily accessible whatever you choose at your mode of transport. There are plenty of car parks only a few minutes walk away and there is even a car park behind the theatre. The train and bus stations are also only a 5-7 minute walk away. What Can You Do At The Marlowe Theatre There is a large variety of performances held at the Marlowe Theatre and these include plays, concerts, festivals, musicals, dance shows and of course...

Theatre with a dramatic background!

Advantages: spectacular backdrop of the sea, very cheap
Disadvantages: performances only of an evening

...appropriately because there is not shelter from the rain whatsoever, although inexpensive rain macs can be purchased. Although we didn't actually see a live performance because we had other things to do in the evenings it is something which I will definitely do in the future. Visiting the theatre during the daytime was good and there was a lot to see, but you just get the sense that the place really comes alive during the evening when the performances are on. It's quite easy to find too and there is a car park for day visitors and theatre goers. Prices (for day visit): Adults £3.50 Over 60's £2.50 Under 16's £1.40 U12's FREE - fantastic value. Opening Times: 9.30am - 5.30pm open daily throughout the year. Address: Porthcurno, Penzance, Cornwall, TR19 6JU (4 miles from Lands End) - for directions www.minack.com Thanks for reading....

National Theatre's: "War Horse"

Advantages: Good ticket prices and brilliant puppetry
Disadvantages: Was over complicated in parts

...A Reflection of the National Theatre Interpretation of "War Horse" compared to the book. This play was orignally shown in 2007 and has now returned back to the stage due to demand back at the National Theatre and is booking untill January. "War Horse" is the story of a boy's love for his horse in 1912 Somerset, who are wrenched apart by World War One. The crucial issue staging a play, based upon a novel established through the eyes of a horse 'Joey', was constructing equine creatures with authentic movements, sounds and size that could be easily moved and ridden, particularly during the intense scenes of conflict. This was inventively answered by the use of "life-sized puppets" divised by the Handspring puppet company, with wooden skeletons covered in translucent fabrics and a belly filled with puppeteers who simulated...
