Coloured sulpher lakes, temples and geysers

Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: bloody cold and difficult to reach

...First of all, a quick hurrah - after many technical problems I am finally back in Ciao, so apologies to those to whose comments I have not responded - that's why. Right, the Dieng Plateau. This is essentially a high altitude plane created by the caldera of an ancient volcano in central Java. It's star attractions are a coloured sulpher lake, some very ancient hindu temples, sulpher mines, mud geysers and some truly stunning scenery. It does, however, have its drawbacks, of which more later. So let's deal with these one by one. First of all, the plain itself. It's pretty big, several kilometers across, and hard to get to. From the nearest big city it's a three-bus trip of some seven hours, so doesn't make sense as a day trip. But it's worth it when you get there, the clean cold air a welcome change ffrom the polluted humidity...

...Wow, its me...yes Dalesman !!, writing about a product from his own homeland, yup I'm talking Yorkshire Tea here, not Tetleys or PG Tips, but good old Yorkshire Tea... I get cows, I get Sheep Shit,I get Tractors and an aura of muck spreaders..no !!! only joking, this is a wonderful product..read on No we don't have a squadron of ageing Mother-in-Laws out on the Dales Tea Plains picking only the ripest tips from the hardy Yorkshire Tea Plants, found nestling on a sunny plateau higher up in the rich tea growning areas of Warfedale or Wensleydale. This magic stuff, the liquid gold of the Craven Dales is actually blended in the Harrogate plains of North Yorkshire.. Nowthen, before you can sample the tea to its fullest effect and get that tea kick on the back of the throat ( not forgetting that you don't atually swallow the teabag...

A phone 4 you

Advantages: Lots of features, good battery life, sleek and elegant
Disadvantages: Sound quality could be better, little else to fault at this price

...I was fortunate enough to borrow this phone off my friend for about 6 months. The idea was that I would use this one until I was able to purchase my own. Well this telephone is certainly on a completely different plateau to my previous phone which I termed "the brick" In it's appearance it is very sleek and compact, with a distinctive styling and more importantly it is very light, a stark comparison with the brick. Upon flipping the phone up to open it, you are greeted with a very clear display, the menu is easy to navigate around to, which is just as well as I seem to be quite hopeless with phones. In addition to this it contains all the basic features of a phone as you would expect but also includes an MP3 player facility as well as FM radio. These are nice features but in truth are there for convenience rather than genuine sound...

PHD Synergy- King of All-In-Ones

...I hadn't tried this product until a while ago and I must say I was extremely impressed. I had been languishing in a physical plateau and this was just the ticket to kickstart me again. One look at the ingredients shows you that it is not kidding around. 37g of protein per serving is a perfect amount, especially post workout, to get some optimal results. That, alongside with creatine, high quality carbs and other nutrients makes it a dream come true for those looking for rapid muscle gain. The mixability of the powder was also excellent, making it convenient as a first thing in the morning meal as well as postworkout. For anybody serious about their fitness goals but finding it hard to meet the nutritional requirements due to job, family commitments etc. you cannot go wrong. The only downside I can think of is that the tubs don't last...

Infinite Despair

Advantages: Incredibly powerful, brilliantly executed

...Esoteric are a strange and otherworldy band, occupying headspace somewhere between the intense, sludgy, unconventional output of Khanate and Neurosis with their own unique brand of ethereal, drug-soaked, funeral doom. Their fourth full length, 'Subconscious Dissolution in the Continuum' continues in the vein of their prevous album, "Metamorphogenesis" consisting of nearly an hour of dissonant, painfully slow doom riffs overlaid by guttoral growls, counterpointed by agonised, multi-layered screams. With an average song length of 15 minutes, the album builds slowly from mesmerising, lumbering slowness, slowly gaining momentum, occasionally reaching a plateau of disjointed, chugging riffs, like some vast unimaginable beast stirring in its slumber. There are occasional periods of serenity, with achingly sad yet somehow almost hopeful...

Advantages: Great use of momentum, some great chugging riffs, atmospheric
Disadvantages: Some may find their style a little bland

...'Australasia', the second full length by curiously named US sludge merchants Pelican, is an interesting exercise in progressive metal that merges the post-rock musings of 'Oceanic' era Isis with the weighty, pounding, wall-of-sound riffs championed by sludge pioneers Neurosis, backing the whole thing up with crunchy, groove-drenched, slowed-down Mastodon riffs. Most of the songs approach ten minutes in length, and the main theme of the album is momentum, which ebbs and flows throughout, slowing to a crawl and gradually building sludgy riff upon sludgy riff, increasing in tempo before plateauing upon reaching a deep, bass-heavy groove. Elsewhere the sound is more lethargic, coming on in endless, crashing waves to the accompaniment of gentle, transient, searching guitar melodies, whilst other parts give way to semi-acoustic guitars...

One of a few unplugged albums worth bothering with

Advantages: Some great songs
Disadvantages: A bit to laid back at times

...This album really shows the song writing ability of Kurt Cobain. With all the distortion stripped away, only the song remains. There?s a wide variety of material here, from Bleach, In Utero as well as some fantastic covers. About A Girl and Come As You Are are, as you would expect, fantastic but the first cover, Jesus Doesn?t Want Me For A Sunbeam, is somewhat less than great. However, the cover of David Bowie?s The Man Who Sold the World is as good as the original. For me, the middle of the album tails off somewhat and I tend to skip to Plateau. For me the best track though is the cover, Lake of Fire, it sounds like something out of a western ? you can imagine Ennio Morricone writing it! Overall it?s a great, if maybe a bit to laid back, album....

Otherworldly Funeral Doom

Advantages: Hugely atmospheric, brilliantly executed, subtle variations throughout

...albums can be monotonous and boring, here the band manage to keep things interesting all the way through by incorporating subtle variations in song structure throughout each track. The title track builds to a slow, sorrowful, melodic doom riff that is reminiscient of Mourning Beloveth, whilst elsewhere there are soaring, dimply-hopeful melodies in amongst the gloom similar to those employed on the last few releases by fellow funeral doom merchants Esoteric. The songs frequently build to a plateau, stall, then lurch forward again with renewed momentum, managing to create at once an atmosphere of urgency and despondency. Overall then, 'A Caress of the Void' is an excellent funeral doom release, highly reccommended to fans of Esoteric, Skepticism and Thergothon. Tracklisting- 1. A Caress of the Void 08:52 2.
