...The 'Xbox DVD Movie Playback Kit', as it is titled, does exactly what it says on the tin. It is an XBOX accessory that is required to play DVDs on the XBOX console. Other consoles such as the PS2 allow this through the game controller but sadly this isn't the case with the XBOX. (but it is worth noting the XBOX doesn't need a memory card so I suppose Microsoft wanted to make you pay more for something). To start off with, it has a retail price of £19.99, but you can shop around as I did to find it priced at £17.99. It comes in two parts: a transmitter part (the remote control) and a receiver part (a plasticky thing that plugs into the controller socket). However, once I got the DVD playback kit, I started to use the Xbox for playing DVDs and games, which was a plus. Let down by stuttering playback

Advantages: Apart from the frequent freezes in playback, a good DVD player
Disadvantages: Infuriatingly frequent freeze-ups while playing disks.

...Disappointing: this player had promise but a maddening fault. We ordered this player to partner a flatscreen TV, intending to use the upscaling feature to take full advantage of the panel's resolution. The first impression was very good: excellent picture, good sound, and all seemed well. It's a nice looking player (only flaw is a rather flimsy disk tray) that's easy to set up and get working. Unfortunately, on a variety of disks, the player demonstrated its bad habit: every ten to fifteen minutes, the playback would freeze for anything from a moment to five seconds or so, like a really bad layer change. Not a problem with the disks (several tried, all OK in other players) but the player itself. Okay, so there's a problem with that particular player, so we return it. The replacement has the same fault but does it more frequently...

If the response rate is too high, then a fast moving object will leave a trail behind, this is called ghosting, and you don't really want it when you play games. However, I wanted my new monitor to be able to BOTH handle games AND have a good quality DVD playback. LG's Flatron L1980Q was what I wanted. Excellent for games, and good for DVD playback. It was also very cheap compared to other monitor of the same range. There are better 19'' monitors out there, but the price difference makes this one the best buy for me. Average DVD Playback

...supported by the drive to allow for high quality 'ripping' of audio tracks to the popular mp3 file format. I found the DVD playback to be average, on a small number of certain dvds, even with the latest drivers, the sound becomes out of sync with the image. It is very annoying when you are watching a movie and you can instantly tell that when someone starts speaking a second before their lips move, something is wrong. No other applications were running on the system when this problem occured. Software support has also been very limited with the DXR3 as Creative Labs have only supplied very poor Windows 2000 drivers where the sound is never in sync with the image. With third party software it has been very easy to watch DVDS from any region on the system. Overall i have found the system to be high quality, only let down by the poor...

An essential add-on for your xbox

Advantages: Takes away the need for a separate machine so more space, fewer wires etc.
Disadvantages: Feel a bit cheap, sound/picture quality won't be as good as an expensive dvd player.

...I got an xbox for my birthday last year and was pretty pleased with it (halo being in my opinion the best game ever invented). However, my main quibble was the price, given that it was, at the end of the day, just a pc in a box. I then spotted the dvd movie playback controller in HMV for £19.99. I thought this was very steep for a small thingy that plugged into one of the controller ports and a remote so i didn't get it (as well as the fact that i owned no dvds at that point). Then two things happened: 1) a friend explained to me that microsoft weren't allowed to package the xbox with the dvd playing gadget since each dvd player must have a licence and that they needed to be sold separately for this purpose. 2) i won a dvd in a competition. Obviously the second one was the most important factor in making my decision...
