Things can only get worse
Review of Police Academy (Wide Screen) by TheNeil

Advantages: Reasonably funny
Disadvantages: Might not appeal to all tastes

...The first in the seemingly endless Police Academy series is also the best (but given the competition it's hardly suprising). The premise is simple, city tries to increase number of police officers by relaxing the entry requirements to the city's police academy. Cue hippies, dropouts, and undesirables all signing up to join the boys in blue. There are some funny scenes, and being new, had a freshness that set it apart from other films of the time. It's crude, lwed, and not in the slightest bit sensitive of subtle. A little predictable maybe but in this setup you're not interested in the destination, just the journey there. The cast are good and there's a lot of fresh faces and up and coming talent in there (and Kim Cattrall is just to die for). They do a credible job and do what's needed of them. Worth watching but by now surely... Read review

Cops in Toon Town
Review of Police Academy 7 - Mission To Moscow DVD by ThePolarOne

Advantages: Lighthearted, better than the previous one.
Disadvantages: Don't like slapstick, feels like a kids cartoon.

...86. Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow (1994) I was really expecting to loathe this film. The sort of film that relies on kicking a grown man in the knackers for it best laughs. It's actually just a fairly average, lightweight comedy, trying to cater for the remaining fans of the series, but failing to grab the wider audience. I've seen all the Police Academy films, and they do get worse with every installment, with this one being the exception. Part 6 (City Under Siege) was utter garbage, and so Mission to Moscow is a minor improvement on it. The plot kicks off as some of our Police Academy regulars are invited to Russia to help investigate the Russian Mafia. Soon things centre around a computer game, funded by the Russian Mafia, simply called 'The Game'. It's highly addictive, and why are the Mafia behind it? It's a pretty tenuous... Read review

An institution full of slapstick comedy and cops!
Review of Police Academy DVD by LR_17

Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: Nothing

...Hey fellow Ciaoers. You know me best for my film reviews and I love to do them. I'm on a film streak at the moment with one of my "it makes me laugh" films. Seeing as it makes me happy, I thought I'd do a review on it! It's a golden-oldie and it's called: POLICE ACADEMY ***ACTORS AND ACTRESSES*** Steve Guttenberg - Zeus and Roxanne, 3 Men and a Little Lady, P.S. Your Cat Is Dead Kim Cattrall - Sex and The City, Crossroads, Ice Princess G.W. Bailey - Scorcher, Jesus, Soloman Bubba Smith - Fist of Honor, Holy Matrimony, My Samurai George Gaynes - Stepmonster, The Crucible, The Fantastic Four Andrew Rubin - Tell Me That You Love Me, Roughnecks, Sunnyside David Graf (Now sadly deceased) - The Brady Bunch Movie, Rules of Engagement, The Cactus Kid Michael Winslow - Crimebusters, Buy & Cell, Gremlins Bruce Mahler - The Perfect... THE BLUE OYSTER BAR
Review of Police Academy DVD by robbroome

Advantages: Tackleberry on the rifle range
Disadvantages: Sequels 4-6

...Police Academy is one of those movies you feel extremely guilty about. Why? Well it's stupid, corny and at times even ridiculously phony. Yet the film seems to have gathered a type of cult following and you can see that by noticing that there were six sequels made to this film. How do I know? Well as a kid this was my favorite film and I went to every film religiously. Now I'm all grown up and I can't watch most of the series anymore without groaning. This first film though and the two after it are the exceptions to the rules. Are they all corny? Of course. That doesn't stop me from liking them though. The plot is simple: The mayor has decided that in this day and age of crime she would remove all limitations on entering into the police academy. Now anyone who wants to can be a cop. Of course most of the faculty of the police academy... Read review

Too many movies too many similarities
Review of Police Academy 1-7 - The Complete Collection (Box Set) by IzzyS

Advantages: Pretty funny if you like slapstick humour, has bonus features
Disadvantages: Too much of a muchness, generally pretty expensive

...This is a complete collection boxset that contains all 7 of the original Police Academy movies. They vary in classification, with the original movie being 15 rated, the sequel and the 4th film is 12 rated and the others (the 3rd, 6th & 7th movies) being PG. That being the case, im sure kids (about 7 or 8 years or older) would find the PG ones pretty funny. I saw these movies when I was younger and remembered getting a good laugh from them, hence why I bought it. I've got to say, im not overly convinced that its worth shelling out the money for the complete collection, the reason being that in my eyes alot of the movies are very similar and the jokes/humour re-hashed, with alot of repeated situations and so on. The movies date mainly from the 1980s, with the original film dating from 1984 and the last, 'Mission to Moscow' being from... Read review

Step Inside Into A New World!
Review of Brixton Academy by raffi257

Advantages: Excellent Sound, Easy To Get To
Disadvantages: Security Doesn't Check You For Anything Illegal Which May Be Bad

...side. There is a low level balcony to each side of the standing arena for wheelchair users. There are few pubs and bars outside the Academy and there is also a Nando’s right in opposite the Academy. From the tube station to the Academy, it is a few minutes walk if you are a very fast walker. If you walk at an average speed it will probably take about 5 minutes. Last note, I should recommend that you leave the Academy as soon as possible, don’t hang around because I was hanging around for a while and then I heard bottles smash. There is also an ambulance and police there just in case anything happens. All in all, a great venue and would go there again.... Read review

POLICE ACADEMY (1984) [FILM ONLY REVIEW]
Review of Police Academy DVD by Charles_Strickland

Advantages: Somewhat funny
Disadvantages: Deplorable from start to finish

...Hugh Wilson's POLICE ACADEMY was released in 1984, an auspicious debut that would spawn six self-glorified money-making sequels, one every year for the next six years and two television series spin-offs. Although film critics hate anything to do with this long-running franchise there is an army of fans somewhere who made this first film one of the biggest hits of the eighties, the lingering question, therefore, being whether the film that started it all is a good film on it own footing. A crime wave is sweeping through a city and the answer, according to its newly-elected mayor, is to drastically reduce the requirements for entering the police academy, the unrestrictive result being every unemployed bum and loser ends up training to become a police officer. A criminal is even given the choice to join the force as an alternative to going... Read review

Infantile drivel
Review of Police Academy (Wide Screen) by polydeuces

Advantages: Let me come back to you on that one
Disadvantages: Awful acting, terrible characterisation, dull direction, feeble script

...Can anyone tell me why this film is popular? Further to that not only why it was popular but why were there are least 4 sequels even allowing for that fact that even Steve Guttenberg got out before the end. There are many similar films in American film history where a number of films have been made which follow the same pattern. The National Lampoon ones and the Airplane series spring to mind. British cinema I suppose also had the Carry On films but they were subtle art house films compared with the tripe that is Police Academy. The film is set around the premise that a City police department takes on a bunch of recruits who are inept, useless and stupid. With a banal inevitability they come out good in the end but only after a series of comic capers which offends just about every minority there is. After the film if you are not one... Read review

Whatcha gonna do when they come for you...
Review of Police Academy (Wide Screen) by marselluswallace14

Advantages: read review
Disadvantages: read review

...in the world simultaneously. I’m talking about POLICE ACADEMY, a failed attempt of a spoof in the tradition of the ZAZ-movies, but without their brilliance in gag delivery. I’m talking about the film which ultimately destroyed the career of talented, but underused second lead Steve Guttenberg. I’m talking about a movie which didn’t only cause more than a half-a-dozen of sequels, but also numerous rip-offs which surprisingly were far more annoying. I’m talking about... Jokes? You mean, jokes?. The plot of the film is about some weirdoes and misfits who enrol in a big-city police academy and have to face a hard training by mean, strict Lt. Harris (G.W. Bailey) trying to sabotage the new program of the academy, and his duty-bound, but dead-sexy instructor Sgt. Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook). The cadets are bland freaks... Read review

A modern masterpiece!
Review of L.A. Confidential DVD by mambono5

Advantages: One for the collection, memorable performances. Russell Crowe shines.
Disadvantages: Fairly violent so not one for the kids.

...LA Confidential is the best film to have come out of Hollywood in recent years. The acting is first rate, the script brilliant and the setting memorable. The three leads Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce and the ever impressive Russell Crowe shine in this tale of police corruption, sleaze and integrity. Supported by the lovely Kim Basinger who won an Academy Award for the film [Best Supporting actress], the film has no flaws. Crowe is particularly good and puts in an intense performance as cop Bud White. This film will leave you in no doubt of Crowe's talent and will show you why he is considered to be one of the finest actors of our generation. The film was robbed at the Oscars by the studios need to give Titanic all the plaundits for raking in the dosh.... Read review
