Martian Communicator
Advantages: Great performance, secrecy function, lights, shape
Disadvantages: Price, lack of LCD screen
...If you work in an international office, you will know that conference calls and part of everyday life. Not an afternoon passes without the shrill voice of someone booming through out conference phone.
However, they are not the easiest things to conduct or concentrate on and end up more like a fussy moon landing conversation. I always want to say ?Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed? at the end of the call.
It is therefore Ironic that the solution to our dodgy conference calls comes in the shape of an alien spacecraft and more at home in Star Trek than our conference room.
However, the Polycom Soundstation 200 is just that.
What does it look like?
Well, it is a dark grey tripod shaped device which is about the size of a vinyl Album. To one of the 3 sides, it has the controls and buttons for dialing and the overall control...

ISDN & Win2k ?? NO !!
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...After upgrading to the ISDN communicty not so long ago, and hearing so many wonderful things about Windows 2000 it dawned on me as Network Administrator that an upgrade would be a BENEFICIAL step. This cause of action brought me so many problems you would not believe...
At first I had an ISDN card that promised 'Full Compliancy' so naturally I wasn't worried, WRONG !! Win2k couldn't find it present in my machine.. ok Buy a new one (coz it's faulty).. once again WRONG !!
Win2k couldn't see it.. even swapping slots with network cards etc didn't help.. So eventually I made a phone call to Microsoft "..the only ISDN service available is via a USB modem.." so that's what I did, bought the modem, installed it (very easily), Win2k picked it up no problems.. and I've never had a problem with it since !! An excellent little device.. I just...

ISDN Service No Good
Advantages: Free at weekends, after 6
Disadvantages: Slow, no good for games
...a website doesn't load for me, I might have to disconnect to switch ISPs - and then surprise surprise; it loads almost instantly.
It's not any good for gaming, either. There might be some quick periods but every so often you'll get a whole bunch of packet loss at once, causing "lag". This applies especially to games using the UDP protocol; this includes Quake, Quake II, Quake III, Unreal Tournament, IPX Games, first-person shooters, and any other games that require high bandwith.
Don't even bother thinking of getting BT Internet ISDN connections for Napster! The transfer might start at 5kb/sec, but then slowly creeps to the all too familiar 0 bytes / sec.
The only good thing I have to say for BT Internet as an ISP is the fact that from 6 o'clock in the evenings to early morning, the service doesn't have a dial-up charge; i.e. you can use...

OLD BUT WORTH A LOOK
Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Slower than ADSL
...ISDN is an old technology now but still worth a look if your very much into online gaming.
Although ADSL is much quicker averaging download rates of 50/60Kb/sec for a minimum cost of £40 per month it still isnt cheaper than ISDN and could still be out of a gamers price range as opposed to ISDN.
The common idea at the moment is that you can buy ISDN for £40 per month for 15Kb/sec or you can get ADSL at 50/60Kb/sec for the same price but this is not true.
ISDN is in the long run is cheaper than ADSL as you can pay a one off charge of £175 and then get the complete package for £27 per month plus £15 for a 24/7 ISP coming to a total of £42. ADSL is £40 plus £10 for phone line = £50 and at the time of writing most ISPs are charging £58 meaning that in total for ADSL you pay £58 + £10 for your phone line equalling nearly £70...

Swift and Snappy
Advantages: Great speeds, Reliable, Plug and Play, Will last you forever (!)
Disadvantages: Price
...The Psion Gold Card Global ISDN modem is the only PCMCIA modem I have ever used, but I have never and most probably will never need to look elsewhere for a replacement.
The techy bit:
It has two 64Kbps data channels which can be used separately or combined for 128Kbps digital data throughput. Just plug it in and off you go. It is also GSM ready - All major mobile phones are supported including Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola, (apparently, although I haven't tried them).
The accompanying software is very easy to use and I didn't have any problem installing the card ready for use.
The only downside is the price (as with all Psion modems), but if you get reliability and service like this who can grumble?!...

Take a Trip up the Amazon.
Advantages: Delivered to the door, cut price. Delivery free over £25
Disadvantages: Delivery charges slightly higher than other sites, but free if £25 spent
...There are a number of websites in the U.K selling books, these include Amazon, BOL, AlphabetStreet, Blackwells, Country Books and a number of others.
The one I've used most is Amazon.co.uk - simply because I was initially given several free vouchers to use there, (£20 of vouchers) enabling me to get several books free.
Website:- the website itself is fairly attractive, and when you have registered and logged on you can give a list of the types of books that you like, so the subsequently logging on you are given the option to view a recommendation list of books that fits your criteria. This can be quite helpful because it can show new books by your favourite authors even before the books are published. I've made use of this several times.
Another plus point is that you can list al the books by author or by ISDN number...

Too slow but I still like it
Advantages: Not a bad idea. Conveinient
Disadvantages: Too slow
...Ladbrokes are the online bookies that I use. I dont know why though because they have one of the slowest loading site on the net. Its not my modem either because its slow at work too and they have ISDN. The site is hard to navigate. It also has an annoying bit of speech at the beginning that always say the same thing in a really bad sampled .wav file saying "for all your betting needs ladbrokes.com" The thing is, you need to go to ladbrokes.co.uk!!!
The records kept on line with regard to your account and the recent winners and form are good and if you use it with an on line racing paper such as racing post, You cant go wrong....
