Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Im strong to the finish coz i eat me spinach....

Advantages: A classic and Immortal cartoon
Disadvantages: many similar episodes

...The one eyed sailor will always be in the mind of all cartoon lovers ever since he came into business around 1960. He symbolized spinach as being the vegetable of energy and a must have with you in any situation. His arch enemy Bluto, the largely built bearded villain who always gets the first laugh and never the last?.and I mean almost always in Popeye episodes you?ll see this happen, weather they?re battling over getting customers to their bars, bakerys etc. or over Oliveoil, the love of both their lives. Even though it is predictable that Bluto will massacre Popeye in the beginning and then the spinach comes..., there?s a good side to that, kids watching are always like; ?It?s Ok Bluto take your best shot, just wait till the spinach comes, well applaud Popeye with every bruise he puts on you!? Ah, the awesome classic episodes

Advantages: Popeye has always been a great character
Disadvantages: Episodes might be a bit too predictable for some.

...Long before Popeye got his own half an hour show and a son and all of that, there were the classic cartoons around the 60's. Back then the episodes were much more clever. I put it down to better writers and the fact that they didn't have that much to spend on looks or sounds, so they made use of their brains. Sure, the forumla was the same as ever: Popeye would have business A, and Bluto business B, and they would fight for the dominant market. Or they would apply for the same job, etc. Like most cartoons of it's time, Popeye is very easy to work out. You know the Spinach will come into play sooner or later. But somehow when watching it now, it just doesn't seem to matter. Despite the outcome always being the same, it is always sufficiently different. Or maybe it's just me; I ever get tired of Popeye's small talking. :) And not...

Well thanks to a Special Edition DVD release I finally got the chance last night and it was well worth the wait. Jimmy 'Popeye' Doyle (Gene Hackman) and Buddy 'Cloudy' Russo (Roy Schieder) are two New York cops who like nothing better than cleaning up the city by stamping down on the drug problems in the bleak areas of upper Manhattan.
