My Porsche Boxster
Advantages: Numerous
Disadvantages: Some noise; 1 month after purchase developed white growth on hood interior (mold?); servicing is steep (well, what do you expect of a Porsche?)
...have yet to be beaten at the lights (I laugh when they try!)
*no one else was stupid enough to part with £40000 that they didn't have (this was September 1998 - extras included leather sport seats, wind deflector, CD autochanger, Porsche coloured crests on wheels)
Tracker or not?
My insurance company did not specify that I obtain a tracker, AFN said it would not be necessary and I can see why. When I broke my ankle earlier this year and was unable to drive my Boxster not only sent itself to sleep but when those nice breakdown people (swearing their heads off)managed to get it started it took a very long time to do so. In order to get the ignition going, the battery had to be charged. The battery is under the bonnet which is accessed by an electrically operated lever which refused to work as the car had shut down. The breakdown...

Porsche 944 - The cheapest car on the road!
Advantages: Great handling and reasonable running costs
Disadvantages: Can attract unwanted attention
...The extravagant claim in the title is based on the fact that these cars no longer depreciate noticeably, and can be driven on classic insurance. They are also very long lived and generally reliable, and don't do too badly on fuel. Essentially you can run an old Porsche for a fraction of the cost of a new Mondeo!
The text below describes the features, weaknesses, and benefits of the 944 model variations.
First a bit of history. The Porsche 944 was introduced in 1983 based largely on the earlier 924 model. However the 944 included many changes and upgrades compared to the earlier model, the most obvious visual clue being the flared wheel arches to cover the wider track of the new model, the air dam and the rear spolier. Perhaps the biggest change however was in the engine department.
The 924 used a VW derived 2 litre engine, but...

The most accomplished sports car
Advantages: Motoring perfection. Flawless.
Disadvantages: Hmmm...dodgy looking people staring at you at traffic lights.
...30 grand is excellent. It isn't however, perfect. The first time the Porsche options list was presented to me having just ordered my 2.7, I nearly collapsed. It's quite easy to add over £10,000 of extras onto the car although adding an extra £4000 should cover most 'necessities'. In the end I bumped the price of my Boxster up to about £ 35,000 specifying 18" alloys (with 225 section tyres front and 265 sections rear- Pirelli or Conitinental tyres are guaranteed), the hi-fi speaker upgrade (the standard 2 speaker system really should be improved), which gives you 6 speakers and single CD player (cassette standard). Leather isn't standard and will cost you about £2000 extra (couldn't really justify killing those cows just for my enjoyment of leather seats, so I'm sitting on leatherette (man made leather) and alcantara seats). I also specced...

Foxy Boxter
Advantages: Rocket ship
Disadvantages: dangerous to your licence
...I was lucky enough to run a Boxter S all last summer (2001), so I thought that I would share my thoughts with you on these little road rockets.
I never intended to buy a Boxter because, as any fule knowe, real men drive 911's and only hairdressers and gurlies drive Boxters. I began my search in summer 2000 for a one or two year old 996 to replace my five year-old 993. For those of you who aren?t familiar with Porsche's arcane numbering system; each time Porsche change the 911 body shape, they give the car a different 'factory' number. So, while they are all 911's to you and me, to the geeks, they are 965's or 993's or 996's.
Anyhow, in August 2000 I schlepped down to my local Porsche dealer to blag a drive in their 996 demonstrator (the latest 911 designation). There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this numbering system...

Porsche 924
Advantages: Fast and eye-catching
Disadvantages: Restricted visibility - fuel guzzler
...PORSCHE 924
“Go on Dad, spoil yourself.” This was one of my daughters on the occasion of my approaching 65th birthday. I must admit that this beautiful car was one of the possessions I had always aspired to but had never somehow got around to it. My finances would not stretch to a new one and I had spotted a gleaming white model on sale for £9995 (this was way back in 1990). So, my arm was twisted, not requiring much effort, and the deed was done and I said farewell to my faithful Opel Manta GTE.
The 924 was four years old and had covered 68,000 miles, more than average, but was in excellent condition. As Porsche owners will know, the eye-catching characteristics are well known and I had to put up with several good - natured comments such as “You’re getting on a bit to be driving around in a flash car...

Porsche 944- the unsung hero of sports cars
Advantages: Fast, practical, bags of character, immense fun to drive, looks gorgeous, superb build quality
Disadvantages: Weird boot
...I've always fancied the 944, it's got the looks (butcher than the 924, but without the gimpy headlights and ridiculous bottom of the 911), the performance, the fact that it'll go round corners fast without killing you thanks to perfect 50/50 weight distribution, front engine and rear wheel drive.
So, upon finding one for sale for a mere £2800 only 10 miles away, it was with baited breath I went to meet my hero, in the form of a white 1989 2.7 Lux..
...and happy to say, have found it to be not only a car brimming with character, fast, gutsy and bags of fun to drive, but actually remarkably practical and reliable. Enough boot space to cart the weekly Tesco's run back in, and on the reliability front it seems to compare very favourably with my friends far younger and "more sensible" purchases. So far cost me about £200 over two...

Porky 986
Advantages: Fantastic practical supercar that suits the road of today
Disadvantages: Steep Servicing and spares
...impractical was that! What a complete waste of time, the roof mechanism being a solid construction folded neatly in the boot, but with how much space left in the boot. Not much cop for going away weekend, You could fir a suitcase in the boot, but just and just the 1. Practicality saw the better side, so I started to investigate the Porsche a bit more.
Porsche had only had the car out a year, so there very few on the road, there was no friends that I could ask about this particular one, so the onus was on me. I went down to the Porsche garages locally and wanted the same kind of cash, but the spec was way off mark. I remember sitting in this Boxster, with the salesman asking how it felt, I remember answering; I don?t know I haven?t got past the awful plastic dash yet. It showed no comparison to the one I had seen in the car supermarket, ok...

Porsche 944 Review
Advantages: Fun to drive-decent gas mileage
Disadvantages: expensive to maintain
...I have had two 944s over the past few years. This little review is to forewarn any prospective 944 buyers as to what they might be getting into. I loved these cars. They are fun to drive and somewhat entertaining to work on. If you don't know anything about auto repair or don't want to learn you better have a very good paying job or a sugar daddy. These cars are not cheap to maintain. If you plan on letting a Porsche Shop take care of your maintenance you better just buy a new car. Labor rates on these cars are extremely high and Porsche OEM parts are out of sight.
If you are thinking of buying a 944 you definitely want some documented maintenance history on the car. These models have rubber timing belts and have Zero valve clearance. This means if you break a timing belt the pistons crash into the valves virtually destroying...

Cover The Heaving Bosoms
Advantages: Very easy read, funny although I don't think it was meant to be!
Disadvantages: A really interesting premise which could have been fantastic, unbelievable at times, insensitive
...I regularly buy books from Amazon, and love the feature that recommends books you may like based on your recent purchases. Browsing through this section I have found some great books. This was one of the books Amazon thought I might like, though I'm not sure which book bought led them to this assumption.
Plot
Cover The Mirrors by Faye L Booth, tells the story of Molly Pinner, orphaned at birth and raised by her medium Aunt Florrie, during the height of spiritualisms popularity in Victorian Preston.
Molly's life had started poor, in the slums, but at the age of 16, her Aunt and herself find themselves wealthy due to the popularity of her Aunt's 'Talent' of communing with the dead. Her Aunt's untimely death leaves Molly in charge of the family business, and with her Aunt's final advice ringing in her ears, never...

Forget MGF And MX5 Save Up a Bit More
Advantages: Superb Engine, Build Quality, Road Handling
Disadvantages: Interior Space, Plastic Rear Window
...The wife bought a second hand Boxter S last year and i have to agree with many a motoring journalist, this surely has to be one of the best sports cars ever made.
Impecable build quality (no rattles, no creaks, no squeaks) and a fantastic engine and exhaust note make this an absolute pleasure to drive. I am 6ft 4in so the cabin is tight, but i'll put up with that for the sake of the driving experience.
The car came with a metalic blue paint job, Air con, full grey leather, silver inserts on dash, gear knob, handbrake and roll over bars, heated seats, 6 Disk Changer and it looks the biz.
The bonnet has a deep luggage space good enough for 4 good size overnight bags. The boot has a flat, shallowish wide luggage area that will also hold a good amount, but forget your golf bag.
The electric roof goes up and down in about 12...
