.... Suspension, as in cars of this calibre, was firm, though reasonably comfortable. One advantage of owning a Porsche, even an older second-hand model, was the tendency of drivers in front of you in the fast lane on the motorway, to pull into the middle lane when they spot you in their mirror. They didn’t do that when I had my Manta. So for two years I was a more than satisfied owner of a 924 and my wife and I both enjoyed many miles of happy motoring. How, or with what, do you follow a Porsche? Well, surprisingly, my next choice was a three year old Nissan 200SX Turbo and believe it or not, it was superior to the 924 in nearly every way. After nine years, I am still driving it, which proves something, but that’s another story – see my report....

Porsche 944 - The cheapest car on the road!

Advantages: Great handling and reasonable running costs
Disadvantages: Can attract unwanted attention

...the 944 was fitted with a Porsche developed four cylinder engine, effectively half of the porsche 928 model's V8. The first Lux model developed around 165bhp from the 2.5 litre engine, this was increased through various model increments up to the 250bhp of the Turbo version. This new engine made the 944 acceptable to the Porsche customers that had previously rejected the 924 as a rebadged VW, and led to the recovery of the company through the 944's sales success. The standard engine was enough to power the car to 60mph in under 8 seconds, figures as low as 7.4 have been quoted for the Lux, quite respectable even by todays standards. The S model from 1986 featured 16 valves but offered few extra horsepower and was in fact slower in magazine tests from the time. A possible cause for this was the extra weight of the new S model...

...I have had two 944s over the past few years. This little review is to forewarn any prospective 944 buyers as to what they might be getting into. I loved these cars. They are fun to drive and somewhat entertaining to work on. If you don't know anything about auto repair or don't want to learn you better have a very good paying job or a sugar daddy. These cars are not cheap to maintain. If you plan on letting a Porsche Shop take care of your maintenance you better just buy a new car. Labor rates on these cars are extremely high and Porsche OEM parts are out of sight. If you are thinking of buying a 944 you definitely want some documented maintenance history on the car. These models have rubber timing belts and have Zero valve clearance. This means if you break a timing belt the pistons crash into the valves virtually destroying...

Dimplex convection heater with turbo fan

Advantages: Turbo Fan, secure wall mounting, switchable turbo fan
Disadvantages: Mechanical thermostat with turbo fan can be attention grabbing!

...One of the many heaters I tried was this Dimplex free standing/wall mounted convection heater with Fan Boost. I decided to try this after a returning my 4th failed Bionaire BCV3100 heater. The wall mounting arrangement was very affective in securely locking the heater to the wall using 3 simple hooks. The unit is very light weight. There are 2 switches on the side. A power On/Off switch and below that a Hi/Low switch. Below the switches there is a mechanical thermostat to further regulate the heater. On the front of the heater integrated into the turbo fan grill there is a switch to turn the turbo fan on or off. A nice feature is on a hot day you can run the turbo fan without any heat, this provides a cool draft from the heater although it is not as affective as a desktop fan though. ...The cheapest way to become a Porsche owner. These cars are described as the best designed Porsches as they have perfect 50/50 weight distribution due to the engine, gearbox and diff layout. They are powered by a 2 litre engine which is based on an Audi 100 powerhouse and drives the rear wheels. There are many myths surrounding these cars - such as they arent real porkers and they are glorified Volkswagens - Not true. VW & Audi approached Porsche to design them a sports car - porsche duely did so and VW / Audi decided they couldnt afford to build it and sold the manufacturing rights back to Porsche who developed it into the 924. The car has many VW/Audi bits on it but this is no bad thing - an example being that porsche electric window switch is around £90 and a VW part is around £15. ...wheel drive gives great control and road stability and the car really feels like it looks after you. In some ways, wet weather is actually more fun than dry in the Turbo, as it gives you a challenge but not the fear of some other sports cars! The on board computer seems a bit too detailed when you first use it but you soon become a dab hand at ignoring what needs to be ignored and using the really useful bits. The car gets a bit over protective when it comes to warning you of low fuel ,but that's no bad thing. The interior is well laid out and spacious but has a very slight retro feel. Back seats are fine for short journeys and can accommodate a child seat so there is no need to trade the car in for a people carrier when up to 2 kids arrive. Flymo Turbo 330. I bought this and I KNEW what I was buying!

Advantages: Compact, light, easy to store, grass box, quiet.
Disadvantages: None I have found

...at the description. Please excuse the brash tone, this is directed at those who complain about features they knew about before buying. It's a turbo compact hover mower, compact means it may well be smaller than the one you used to own so expect that. A 33cm metal blade to me indicates a 33cm wide cut. If I thought 33cm was too small, I'd opt for a larger model. A 30 litre grass box should be ample for a small to medium garden. My garden is quite large but the mower is a perfect compromise when it comes to the amount of grass it holds, too much it gets too heavy so 30 litre is a good size and even better for storing. 1500 watts power is enough power to get through slightly long grass. If your grass is too long, don't blame the mower if it can't cope, blame yourself. 12 metre cable, if your garden is longer, get an extension or a mower...

...of the feet fell off at the back. One went bouncing off under a desk never to be seen again and the other is now super-glued to the bottom in the middle. I shudder to think of poor Porsche drivers speeding along the motorway suddenly finding their back wheels have sprung off... and I doubt super-glue would be of use! The drive has maintained a minimalist look. A tiny orange LED appears when the drive is on, and flickers to show activity. Aside from that there is no indication of the drive's status. At various points around the housing, the "Lacie" logo and "Design by F.A. Porsche" are engraved into the aluminium giving the unit a sort of personalised/prestigious feel. Let's not get carried away here though, it's still a hard disk no matter who designed it and does the same job as your regular unit! Moving away from appearances, as we all know...

...Of the 3 Porsches I have driven, this has to be the most mad. The reason being that it is not only quick, but it has that extra power under your right foot when you give it a little squirt. When a acar has a turbo on board, it makes such a difference at mid range speed, as the Turbo cuts in. The problem is its not initially quick because of Turbo lag. This is basically non existent in the Porsche. Its just pure power from the outset. This is because its a twin turbo with varying rates of cut in. This beast really throws you in your seat. The Body is a standard Porsche body with a "Whale Tail" spoiler on the back that ensures the rear wheels stay where they should under speeds. When I broke my ankle earlier this year and was unable to drive my Boxster not only sent itself to sleep but when those nice breakdown people (swearing their heads off)managed to get it started it took a very long time to do so.
