Dover Museum

Advantages: free entrance for locals, nice Bronze Age Boat on display
Disadvantages: None

...the British Museum. On the first floor you can view the special exhibition on Victorian Dover. On the top floor of the museum you can view the 6 scaled models of the port of Dover showing its transitions since medieval times. They also have a centralised information desk where you can get more information and guidance if you wish to know about the historical town of Dover. Dover museum offers educational services which range from 4 galleries on such subjects as history and archaeology to name a few. There is also a educational room where you can follow up work and study. They have a well stocked gift shop which is just inside the entrance to the museum and sell many gifts which are within pocket money price range. Opening Times. The museum is open ,10am - 5.30pm Monday to Saturday ,and 12pm - 5.00pm on a Sunday .The museum is closed...

Dover Leisure Centre

Advantages: You don't need to be a member to use the facilities
Disadvantages: Certain parts may be shut due to private events

...Living in Dover means that we don't have too many facilities. Dover Leisure Centre is about the only sporting facility in Dover other than the football and rugby pitches. Location Dover Leisure Centre is located on Townwall Street in Dover which is pretty much on the seafront and within walking distance to the Port of Dover. It is also within walking distance of Dover town, Dover Priory Station and Pencester bus station. Facilities There are two swimming pools at Dover Leisure Centre. There is a main swimming pool which is 25 metres and also a learner / childrens pool. In the main pool, there are two lanes of the swimming pool which are sectioned off to create one slow, and one fast swimming lane. The rest of the pool is then literally just open water where people can swim at their own leisure. The smaller pool is much...

Dover Gateway to England

Advantages: Busy port. Shopping is reasonably good. White cliffs and Castle are attractive
Disadvantages: Lacks character

...Bounded on one side by the Channel coastline and the famous White Cliffs,Dover in Kent is very much a maritime town. Throughout the ages this surprisingly small town has been the gateway into England from Continental Europe. For many Britons heading for holidays in Europe,Dover is the place to hurry through in order to board the ferry or hovercraft at the two passenger docks. Few have the time or even the inclination to explore the town. The well known landmarks of the White Cliffs and imposing Dover Castle located on a dramatic hill top setting blend well with the town's bustling port. You can enjoy a birds-eye-view of the busiest passenger port in the world from the Langdon Cliffs picnic site. The town itself frankly is not particularly distinguished. It is rather lacking in architectural character compared to the likes...

Dover Priory Train Station

Advantages: recently refurbished, nice cafe
Disadvantages: in a grotty area of Dover town

...History Dover Priory Train Station was first opened on 22 July 1861. It was originally called Dover Town but was renamed Dover Priory in 1863. The name Dover Priory was taken from the remains of St Martins Priory which was situated close to the station. Dover Priory Train Station suffered greatly during the war and was actually the first place in Dover that was bombed. Dover Priory Dover Priory is the only train station in Dover and is located about a 5 minute walk from the town centre of Dover. There is a free shuttle bus which runs from the train station to Dover Docks. In August 2006 Dover Priory train station was renovated. These renovations included the refurbishment of the station building itself, the booking hall and the toilet facilities. CCTV cameras were installed which now cover the platforms, waiting areas and ticket...

Dancing in Dover Street

Advantages: Good food and atmosphere
Disadvantages: Can be pricey

...This is the second year in a row my company Christmas Party has been held here, at the Dover Street Restaurant and Bar. The restaurant is on Dover Street (surprise, surprise!) in Mayfair, not far from Green Park tube station. Lucky me, the meal and drinks were all paid for! However the a la Carte menu, Party menus and wine lists, with prices, are available in pdf format on their website (although we had neither of these two party menus shown) - http://www.doverst.co.uk/food.php. It would appear if you are dining a la Carte then expect to pay up to £12 for a starter (Foie Gras, you evil people), but usually they come in at about £8-9.00. Mains start at £13.95 for the two vegetarian options, going up to £21.95 for a steak. House wines are £14.50 a bottle and go up to silly money for the top end stuff. The Atmosphere After...

Diamond review  Port El Kantaoui

Advantages: Beautiful Beaches
Disadvantages: Mainly For Couples, Hassle From Local Shopkeekers

...Port El Kantaoui is a purpose built Holiday Resort on the Northern Coast of Tunisia in North Africa. It is situated just a few kilometres North of Sousse, Tunisia's second largest City after the Capital Tunis. It was built in 1979 with a modern 300 Yacht capacity Marina as its focal point. In recent years this Marina has become a popular mooring location for the rich and famous undertaking their Mediterranean Cruises and the Marina here is said to rival those long established Marinas of Nice and Marbella on the Southern Coast of Europe. It is now also Tunisia's most popular Holiday Resort. I stayed in Port El Kantaoui between the 2nd and 9th July 2006 and found the experience to be a rather interesting one. Since it was my first visit to Tunisia I was a little unsure of what to expect and as my Holiday approached I began to hear...

Dover Castle - Worth A Visit

Advantages: Excellent condition castle, excellent museum
Disadvantages: It is in Dover

...It would be interesting to see how the opening of the Channel tunnel has influenced attendance figures at Dover Castle. Now that so much cross-channel traffic starts to cross over some 15 miles before Dover it is likely a visit to Dover’s beautiful castle is not included on many holiday itineraries. That people no longer take the opportunity to visit the castle is a shame. Whilst in France travellers may visit many chateaux in France or Germany which are probably not as attractive as Dover’s castle. Dover Castle is similar in size and feel to Windsor Castle and the undulating ground and superb central area add to the impression. Set high above the white cliffs Dover castle dates back to the 11th century with the original defences built by Harold being strengthened by William the Conqueror. The superb keep and inner...

Bon Vacances at Port Bourgenay

Advantages: Masses to do, something for everyone.
Disadvantages: Maybe a bit pricey in high season

...beyond our budget if it wasn't for the Clubcard vouchers that are worth four times their face value, but after much debate and research we plumped for Port Bourgenay, run by Pierre et Vacances, as it looked like it was in a perfect location, is close to the beach, and there seemed to be a lot to do. It cost somewhere in the region of £1000 for the accommodation (£250 in deals) for seven nights and £300 for the return ferry. ~*~ Location ~*~ We live in the south west, so a Portsmouth - Cherbourg crossing is ideal for us. We always get the earliest ferry (around 9am) so we arrive in France around 3pm which gives us plenty of time to drive to our accommodation and settle in by bed time. Or so I thought! This really wasn't the easiest place to find at all. We knew the main towns that we had to head towards: Rennes, Nantes, La...

Dover is more than just Ferries

Advantages: Great if you're trying to keep fit and good VFM.
Disadvantages: Gotta be fit and like lots of tunnels and stairs!

...Say Dover to most people and they think of cross channel ferries, illegal immigrants, white cliffs etc. I want to tell you about Dover Castle, often overlooked, more people should take a day to discover it's charms. I am going to explain why I like it, so read on and learn! I entered Dover Castle through the traitors gate because I'm actually a member of The National Trust, and Dover Castle belongs to English Heritage so I had to pay to enter. However in Kent if one purchases a paper printed by the Kent Messenger group there are often reduced price tickets, so in this way at least I got in for half price. In my impression there are only two things in Dover worth their salt, one is the castle and the other is the port, the rest seems to be an almost deserted town and not worth further investigation unless you happen to be...

Western Heights in Dover- A great day out

Advantages: Good view and good open days
Disadvantages: Not well advertised!

...The Dover Western Heights is one of the positive places on Dover. It is currently under restoration with fund raising days which double up as open days where you get to see reenactments of Wars and fights. It is also a very nice place to walk around as you can admire the wonderful view of Dover and its ports. The open days are not very well advertised so it is advised that you look online rather than asking people for details. Restoration has already began with stairs being refitted and also buildings being made safe to go in. All of this is put together by nice willing teams of everyday people ranging from prison officers to doctors! THere also is a nature wwalk around the site so it can be very relaxing. It really is a nice day out for all the family!...
