About 7 years ago this building was run down and dirty. They bought at auction with great prospects. Over the years the popularity of the bar has grown substantially. Started off as 'gay friendly' only gay people went to the bar and a handful of straight people or the hotel guests. Now homosexuality is more accepted, it is mixed and very busy especially in the summer. Bar and Beer Gardens & Terrace It has an outdoor drinking area with garden in front which greets all people from different walks of life. Advantages: offered ad-free free hosting, CGI bins etc.
Disadvantages: server downtime, very slow service. ftp access always oversubscribed. Low bandwidth allowances.

Usual price is £75.00 for a double room, £55.00 for a single room with breakfast. It's a bit of a rip-off, overall, I'd say. The town can get very busy in the Summer, and especially in July (Buxton festival), but even if all the other hotels are full - don't stay at the Portland if you can avoid it, and definitely don't eat there. Oregon's Beautiful Capitol. Portlands Surprise.

Advantages: A lively modern town with beautiful mountain & rivers.
Disadvantages: 'Tis on "the far side"

...a blanket of white. As we drove carefully down, we passed through the clouds to emerge into the sun again. This is not the only spectacular sight to be seen here. Just visit the Columbia River Gorge. The river winds its way through 200 foot high cliffs between Washinton State & Oregon, being the state dividing line. It is huge! A road threads its way up the river on either side, tunnelling through the cliffs to emerge to an even better sight. Waterfalls are in plenty, falling from the tops of the cliffs down the 200ft ravines and into the river. Definately not to be missed. Parks are plentiful, but most beautiful are the roses gardens. The rose is the emblem of Portland, but the unofficial one is the slug. "because it rains so much". The gardens are well laid out. My favourite is the Japanese gardens, for peace...

Advantages: The feeling that you're holding the author's hand the entire time.
Disadvantages: Spontaneous prose will not necessarily suit everyone's tastes
