Would you get a soup promising a hug in a bowl?
Advantages: Vegetarian, dairy free
Disadvantages: Tastes like something died and rotted, too salty
...Outside, the wind is howling, the snow is falling, so I figure what nicer than to have a nourishing bowl of soup? The Baxter's potato and leek soup was on special offer at my local supermarket for three tins for a £2.00, but its usual price was 89p per 415g tin. Since the local supermarket has very few dairy free tins of soup and this is dairy free, it was pretty much a given that I'd get this one eventually. The branding struck me as particularly bizarre - it offers a "hug in a bowl" - I'm not sure why on earth I'd want a hug from a piping hot bowl of soup, that sounds likely to scald.
The tin has a ring pull make it easy and convenient to open, although I found that pulling it open was best done above a pan because it slopped everywhere. The contents were not at all evenly distributed through the tin - they had settled so that the top...

Not that Soup-er
Advantages: Filling, warming, comfort grub
Disadvantages: a little thin and bland
...Whilst picking up a few household products in £ Stretcher yesterday I noticed these Baxters soups priced at 50p per tin and with my love of soup at the moment I grabbed a few from the available flavours.
The whole content of the 415g tin contains 186 calories and 1.7g of fat, making this a really low fat, filling, warming snack or small meal.
I heated my soup in the microwave for 3 minutes, although this can be heated in a saucepan on the hob until it is piping hot.
The soup looks and smells delicious and mouth watering. There are clearly visible chunks of potato, shreds of leek and small pieces of carrot and onion. Unfortunately, the soup was a little watery and could have done with thickening a bit more. It was also slightly bland in flavour. I added a little pepper to perk it up a bit and it was a little better. Some...

BAXTERS Carrot, parsnip & Sweet Potato Soup
Advantages: good price easily microwavable gluten free suitable for vegetarians
Disadvantages: over powering taste of pepper and quite sweet
...Been a former chef and spent 13 years in the trade ill try not to be too critical about this product I have also put the history behind the Baxter's food group at the bottom of this review
As it is the product on review and not the history, I thought you mite like to know the history so have included it as mentioned at the bottom of this review
I first noticed this soup today at Morrison's supermarket as it was on the isle end on offer.
I am always on the look out for a bargain and something on the cheap.
The is soup is from a well-known producer of soups BAXTERS.
The packaging is that of a tub/carton and stands15 am tall containing 600g of soup.
The soup in question is The Baxter's classics Carrot, Parsnip & Sweet potato.
The carton also contains the following information, which is clear to see
Only 3% Fat

Onion and Tomato soup with Potato...
Advantages: Yummy!...if you like tomato...Vegetarian...quite quickly made
Disadvantages: If you don't like tomato, it isn't the soup for you!
...Cooked this when we needed to make our own soup recipe for Food Tech in school, so i mixed 2 recipes up and got a surprisingly good result...my parents loved it! I thought i'd share it with you, just because...i don't know, its something quick, easy and healthy! I have plenty more recipes on the way so, even if you don't enjoy this...there might be SOMETHING you enjoy...
So...heres what you need:
50g butter,
1 Onion
4 crushed garlic cloves
1 large potato
5ml Paprika
Carton of creamed tomatoes
1½ pint of vegetable stock (2 vegetable stock cubes)
5ml cornflour
Salt and pepper

Leek and Potato Soup
Advantages: Lovely on a cold day
Disadvantages: it doesn't last long
...My mum used to make this soup and it tasted lovely, I thought I'd never be able to make it as good as her, so when I got married I tried it out and my husband absolutely loves it as does the children. Its quick, easy and anyone can make it, and I mean that as I'm not the worlds greatest cook!
For the ingredients you will need:
2/3 medium sized leeks
3/4 medium sized potatoes (skinned and chopped up)
2 soup cubes
Method:
Top and tail the leeks and slice up and put into the biggest saucepan you can find with cold water! Not too big, but big enough.
Next peel and chop up the potatoes and add to the leeks in the water. Add the soup cubes and bring up to the boil.
Once boiling, turn down to simmer for around 1/2 hour. You can cover the dish if you wish but it doesn't matter if you don't. The smell as its cooking...

yummy lazy soup
Advantages: no rubbish ingrediants taste great
Disadvantages: expensive
...I usually make my own soups-really easy to do,they make themselves! However when I'm feeling really lazy I use Baxters. They cost more than other brands, but are well worth it.
The potato and leek variety is one of the cheaper in Baxters range and costs about 69 pence. However I wait until they are on offer and stock up.Tinned soup keeps for ages, although in our house the kids normally eat them on sight! At the moment sainsburys have them on offer-buy 2 save 1 pound.
I am into reading labels on tinned food,so can say that these soups contain no junk or cheap fillers. The potato and leek has lots of both vegetables, and is really tasty with some crusty bread.
The leek and potato soup is low in fat so good for my diet-not so the crusty bread!!In addition this variety contains no sugar, unlike the other big brands.
The soups are labled...

Leek and potato Soup
Advantages: Yummy, filling and warming.
Disadvantages: None.
...Leak and Potato Soup
I love a good soup and it is about the only way to get fresh vegetables into my, (very manly), Fiancé. This is so easy to make and tastes great. It isn't as good as a starter as the potatoes make it really filling.
Serves 6
Ingredients:
4 medium to large leeks
4 large potatoes
A knob of butter or 2 teaspoons of olive oil
2 pts vegetable stock or 2 pts water and 1 ½ vegetable stock cubes
Pinch of salt
½ pt of single cream or ¼ pt of cream and ¼ pt of milk
A teaspoon of thyme
Equipment Needed:
A potato peeler
A sharp knife
A large saucepan
A blender or food processor
Method:
Peel the potatoes and chop into chunks. You really don't need to be neat as you'll be blending everything later.
Next chop the root part of the leek off and peel the top layer of skin from the leek and throw away. Chop...

Chips, boiled, creamed. The humble potato is very versatile
Advantages: A very versatile vegetable
Disadvantages: None
...I have to say that the majority of main meals in our house include the humble potato. But when you sit and think about the potato it is not as humble as it makes itself out to be. When we were children no meal was complete without either roast, boiled or mashed potatoes. It was a rare occasion that chips appeared on the menu and my Mum fried her chips in a frying pan in shallow fat, they were rationed and we probably had around ten chips each!
As times have changed so have eating habits and now many people favour pasta or rice rather than the potato. I agree that pasta and rice make a welcome change from potato but give me a nice crispy roastie any time.
I dont know what you think but I always think that the variety of potato that you buy is important , I favour the red skinned potato, Desiree if they are available. A lot...

Slim Jim's Soup
Advantages: Calorific Values
Disadvantages: Taste
...It’s that time of year when the nights have well and truly drawn in, it’s starting to get a lot colder and you need a big lift to get off your backside and do just about anything. This is where the marvellous thing that is soup comes in. I have to confess that I love the stuff and so I don’t need any excuse to drink it. I do tend to have a lot more in the winter though and, when I am sitting at my desk in work, I do often have at least one “cup a soup” a day. Recently I decided to try Batchelor’s Slim a Soup Leek & Potato and here are my thoughts.
Batchelors are the leading manufacturer of cup a soups in the UK and the most prominent brand. They make a huge range from the standard chicken, tomato or golden vegetable, through a decent range of slim a soups for those of us who like to watch our waists...

Feeling souped-up
Advantages: Filling; plenty of soup in a can
Disadvantages: A bit too spicy
...This Heinz soup is from their "Special" range and I bought it for 44p from Somerfield.
The tin has one of those rings to pull the lid open, so that was a good start. When I took the lid off, I could smell rosemary.
The soup itself is made of 18% sweet potato, which in a 400g can is about 2oz of potato. As well as the rosemary, the soup also contained whipped cream, garlic, sugar, chilli and a tiny bit of red pepper.
The soup is a slight orange colour and has a blended consistency. I was hoping it would be quite chunky as I love sweet potatoes. There were two or three small chunks but mainly, it was all mashed up with the other ingredients.
As for the taste, well it tasted of tinned soup. It had that plain "tinned soup" flavouring that I can't quite put my finger on. I've noticed a lot of Heinz products taste the same...
