The Powerhouse Gay Nightclub Newcastle June 2009

Advantages: Easy to make Conversations, Not everyone was rude
Disadvantages: High Prices, Some Rude Staff & Customers, Dirty Carpets, Crowded Toilets

...on a weekend and have certainly shot up in price (to my horror) in the last year! If you want to go to the gay pubs and then the Powerhouse on a drinking session take over £100 out with you, (or do what many people seemed to do and that was get into the night club and not buy any drinks or get one drink to last the whole night). The prices might reflect the cost of going out in Newcastle as some people did not seem to recogn that these prices were that high; but I did see a straight bar that night in Newcastle that was selling drinks for a very cheap £1 a pint! Overall: I am giving the powerhouse a fair and a bit generous 2 star rating. It would have to be terrible to get a one star but nonetheless, although it had some good points I will look for another venue if I decide to drink in Newcastle again. Leching and Larfing - A Night Out In Powerhouse

Advantages: Huge venue, good crowd
Disadvantages: Mainstream music

...In comparison to cities like Manchester and London, Newcastle’s gay scene has got quite a way to go, but over recent years a throng of gay and gay-friendly bars and clubs has sprung up around the city’s Times Square area. If you’re in the mood for it, you can simply stagger from pub to bar and straight to club and on an average night out, the chances probably are that you’ll find yourself in Powerhouse. Whilst it might sound like an electrical retail superstore, this particular Powerhouse is actually a large night club set over two floors. A gaming powerhouse

Advantages: Arguably the best selection of games of any current console. Great HD graphics.
Disadvantages: Hardware may still be somewhat unreliable. Lacks innovations specific to the Wii and PS3.

...i had decided on the tv, a Sony KF42SX300, i searched the internet and found some great prices, the lowest price seemed to be around £1550 but with no stand! i had used the Powerhouse stores a few times before but not the website so i decided to see what they offered, the website was simple and my product easy to find at only £1999.99+ free stand!! also, delivery and installation was only around £40 compared to the range of £50-89.99 i had found on other web sites, i did decide to take the full 5 year guarantee at £439.99 yes i know! this seems expensive but after reviewing the terms and conditions ( more than 2 faults-straight exchange, parts out of stock more than 10 days-exchanged, free loan tv etc) also the warranty was fully insured by allianz-cornhill made it that much safer, i was just going to stick this purchase straight on my...

New Powerhouse

Advantages: It's on a few floors now
Disadvantages: lots of straight people and not many loos

...Since the previous review was written in 2004 the Powerhouse has moved (yet again - three times in about four years!) The new club is a lot smaller than the previous one but it is spread across more floors. It seems the only thing that hasn't changed are the prices. £10 entry on a Saturday but it is open from 23:00-04:00 (which I think most clubs are now). This club is also a maze of stairs and doors. Once you pay your money you can either turn right into the ground floor bar which has just had a pool table and a DJ stand put in, from there you can go down the spiral staircase (not too good when you've had one too many) and deposit your coat for £1.50 or go to the toilets. The first floor plays popular music, and has a flashing dancefloor a la Saturday Night Fever (who said it was the year 2007????) unfortunately...

...I ordered a hifi from the online arm of Powerhouse - reduced from £250 to £100 - my credit card was debited within hours, I received and email confirmation with hours and a mail confirmation within days. After five days, I phoned to ask when it would be delivered. 'We have none in stock' was the reply -'Your purchase is cancelled.' And with that I was left high and dry - no apology, no reasons for not contacting me, no offers of compensation. Why hadn't they called me when they knew it was out of stock? I will never know, because they wouldn't tell me. I wrote to the Managing Director - no reply. I emailed customer services - no reply. ...Powerhouse is a large electrical retailer, very much in the mold of Curry's and Dixons, but without the national coverage. As far as I am aware, stores are only located in the South West of England (but readers around the country can correct me on that if necessary). My experiences of the store are relatively mixed - whilst the customer experience that I had was generally positive, some of the negative aspects outweighed the positive - and I probably wouldn't recommend shopping there again. Powerhouse Blues...

...with the same dirty sounding bass and crunching snare drum, the rhythm guitar playing of Jimbo Mathus can be heard picking out the main theme, this allows Buddy the space to play some powerful sounding solo’s that he now can elongate to his hearts delight. “Stay all night” is a song that shows the playing skills and musicianship of all involved, as Buddy can solo in between the powerhouse sounding band. The following track “Tramp” finds some of Buddy’s signature guitar pyrotechnics played along the back of the backing bands rock steady playing, as the track ends a voice can be heard to cry “you are out there on your own”.
