...read a number plate from a car a short distance away to check that your eyesight is ok. Once you have done this, you will show the instructor where the car is and the instructor will ask you two maintenance questions before you start the car. The test lasts between 35 and 40 minutes, and you will drive in a variety of road conditions.
*The practical driving test currently costs £48.50 on a weekday or £58.00 on weekday evenings and weekends. Plus the cost of a double lesson with your driving instructor.*

ASK if you are unsure about anything before your test. At times I think my driving instructor thought I was a little strange as I was asking lots of questions about things that I already knew the answer to, just to confirm it in my head. He was really nice about it though and answered them all for me. Also on the day of your test...
Advantages: Being able to drive! Disadvantages: The F word - Failing
...I read all these posts frantically before taking my test and they really did given me an insight into what it is like, so I thought I would add my own contribution
I passed my driving test on Tuesday (woo!!) but it was a long journey starting when I was 17? (If you are just interested in the practicaltest itself skip down to where it says PRACTICALTEST INFORMATION)
So I turned 17 and got driving lessons for my birthday. I had never really been one to think WOW I really want to drive, it just was something I assumed everyone did. My parents, grandmother, sister and uncle all passed first time (no pressure eh?) using the same driving instructor. So my lessons were booked, unfortunately the driving instructor had retired but he assured my mum that I would be in good hands as I could have his Son.
At 17 I had just started going...
Advantages: Good variety of reading texts Disadvantages: The Shakespeare tests are out of date
...a thirty-minute writing task which is loosely tied to the play in question (for Twelfth Night it centres on the idea of disguise) and finally a 'Reading and Understanding task', which for Macbeth requires the pupils to show an understanding of how the character of Lady Macbeth changes during the play. These two Test Papers could perhaps be of use to someone studying the plays at a fairly low level.
You can of course find several books in local branches of W H Smith or Waterstones that are specifically aimed at giving pupils practice in preparing for the KS3 National Tests and that will have been updated to cover the syllabus's current Shakespeare plays, one of which has to be studied. It may make more sense to buy one of these, but I do feel that Testing KS3 English Skills and Practice Year 9 is a worthwhile addition if you are still looking...
Advantages: The FEELING OF PASSING!!! The little pink licence.Being cooler than your mates Disadvantages: how disheartening it is! Knowing your good enough!! THE PRICEEE
...that actually driving without having to give way at least 4983 times in the space of 5 minutes was a rare thing.
I suppose this was an advantage because i was used to meeting traffic straight away. 18 hours later with this white-haired OAP, over the course of a month, he hadn't taught me ANY manovres, didnt let me drive off on my own at the beginning of lessons, never praised the things tht I did learn and was still swiping £20 quid every hour, i thought id best sack the poo.
I was thinking i should be half way to bookin my test by now and i wasnt confident in anything i was doing, a simple left turn was turning into a nightmare becaus my instructer never let me do it on my own!
My next instructor, big old ron, was amazing compared to the other old fogey. The first time i met him he was 10 minutes early, came whizzing around in his...
Advantages: Freedom drastically increases, fun, life long Disadvantages: pub life decreased, may become obese due to lack of exercise, expensive
...I?ve been driving a whole year now and except an accident thank god, I?ve been through the lot. I?ve written about my experiences of learning to drive below and also the advice id give to others starting out including the main topic the very important test but I?ve included my experiences in the first section if you are interested which does contain quite a bit of information about learning to drive, if you are only interested in the advise on the practicaltest please do skip to the latter part of this review, happy reading!
I actually started driving 1 year earlier than the minimum age due to a disability of mine, it must be bad enough for those starting at 17 but I didn?t know anyone else who?d learnt at 16 so it seemed quite a big deal.
I looked around for whom I was going to go with, and it is expensive but to me there...
Advantages: Freedom! The end of all those lessons, where to go now..!? Disadvantages: Very expensive, nerve wracking, and frustrating!
...Passing your test!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
When I first started taking my driving lessons I actually thought very little about the actual test itself and just carried on as normal. I sort of knew I was good enough to pass and had a feeling I?d pass first time? Yep, this feeling was wrong, but there you go.
First things first, to start learning to drive you first need to get a provisional license, which now comes in the form of a little green card with ?DVLA? stamped all over it in clear writing.
The theory test
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The theory test is something you should try to get out of the way as soon as you possibly can, in my opinion, so you can focus on your actual practical driving skills. A lot of the theory will make more sense once you have a bit more sense of the roads, for example roundabouts and junctions, so starting...
Advantages: i passed with flying colours - the 4th time lol Disadvantages: took me 4 times
...After reading loads of reviews on here, i can now write my own review on passing the driving test. I finally passed in 08/08/08 - COOL DATE EH?
After 4 attempts at the driving test, i finally passed 4th time round. I hated the thought of doing the driving test for such a long time, at first i even wondered why i was even out learning, cause i was dreading the big exam at the end.
So.. at 21 i started out on my driving lessons in Derry in Northern Ireland, using a great instructor Dennis Martin - www.classicschool.co.nr
I started off very nervous, which made me not pick up things for a good while, but after a while i finally got the hang of it.
after 1 YEARS AND HALF OF LESSONS :( i finally applied for my first test ...
on the day of my first test, i was grand, happy and no nerves whatsoever, so off i went, and all was going...
Advantages: Rule the road Disadvantages: Stuck with the green card
...Hello to all reading this. My name is Amjad I am 22 years old & live in West London. I would like to share some tips on how to pass your driving test. Also please read other members views as everyone shares there own advice which may be of use to you. Well lets get started.
First of all you need to be 17 & have a provisional license to start, don't delay prices are rising I got mine in 2004 cost £35 now £50+ you can pick one up at your local post office.
The theory test is one that I think we kinda get a bit paranoid & nervous. So don't be afraid to give one a shot even if you fail no worries I actually passed on my second attempt & consider my self unlucky. Well to pass , you are required to pass both parts of the test. First the multiple choice questions otherwise known as the theory score required 43 out of 50 & secondly hazard...
Advantages: Freedom, Independance and the buzz of passing! Disadvantages: Potentially very expensive, consuming, the unknown
...Well I'll start by indroducing myself as a 27yr old guy from good old Derby!
I left it late to learn how to drive but got there in the end and I'll tell you how.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PART 1....... THE PLAN
When I decided I wanted to learn to how drive I realised that I didn't want to spend months or years learning to drive, I wanted to do it in a matter of weeks and by spending the least amount of money. Well that was the plan anyway!
As soon as I passed my theory test I booked my practicaltest which was for the 7th Sept 2009, 7 weeks away. I then searched around for a Driving Instructor and found a school which was well priced and covered my area, I called them and had a chat about one of their packages which was 30hrs...
Advantages: Amazing sence of achievement, and FREEDOM!!! Disadvantages: Very soon you become Mum's TAXI!
...practicing the manoeuvres too much, as it will be hard to perfect these until your general driving is more confident. MY ADI seemed to be able to gauge my confidence and ability really well, and he pushed me very hard in each lesson. From quite early on he took me onto very busy dual carriageways (often in rush hour), and around many busy roundabouts. Once you master busy and difficult routes you will find your confidence really grows, and you will then be able to understand easily how to do the manoeuvres. Reversing is tricky at first as your back wheels technically become your front wheels and it feels back to front!
I put in for my theory test straight away, and brought a CD rom with all the DSA theory questions on it along with practice sessions for the hazard perception. I spent time every day going over and over the questions until I...
