Indispensible for outing yourself as a tourist in Southern Africa
Advantages: Comprehensive, up-to-date, well researched
Disadvantages: cumbersome to carry
...with a focus on the impending World Cup.
For me the advantage that the Lonely Planet presents over other publications is that it is not so in-depth of particular places within South Africa - other than Cape Town and Johannesburg, there are no special chapters for cities - e.g. Durban is included in the KwaZuluNatal chapter - even though it is a city of 3.5 million people. It breaks up the book nicely into the provinces, with the Provinces indexed on the open side of the book to assist rapid reference.
The guide scores well on the number of maps it has, although if you intend to travel by car around South Africa, they are not likely to be sufficient - a good road atlas would be an essential. However, since certain places are not really that safe to walk in - e.g. the townships, and the maps are not detailed enough in this respect, the guides...

South Africa - A World of its own
Advantages: It is beautiful, lots of things to do and see, good tourist facilities for both families and travellers, this place is amazing all round!
Disadvantages: Some areas can be very dangerous - but then most countries do
...As the title suggests, South Africa is a place you probably never want to forget. In fact you won?t be able to forget it if you go there!!!!
If any of you readers are from South Africa or have been there and see something I have written wrongly or I have missed something out on this opinion, please tell me and I will gladly change it.
There are many things you should know before visiting this place, for your own safety and to get the best enjoyment out of the place.
GENERAL SAFETY RULES
- Don?t go out alone at night in certain places in South Africa, unless you are in a place that you have been told that it is a safe place to be by a trustworthy person
- In certain cities there are these taxis that you shouldn?t get into. They are usually Toyota Hi-aces (like minibus things) and if you jump into one of those you are...

South Africa. The Ultimate Holiday Option
Advantages: Spectacular scenery, friendly people always willing to help, great value for money!
Disadvantages: Ongoing worries about crime, other than that perhaps sunburn.
...Being South African born and bred, and having travelled through much of Europe this year, I now feel compelled to convince the whole of Ciao to visit good old South Africa. I recently went back for a short visit, and was once again convinced that I will eventually end up back there. Wide open spaces, wonderful sunshine for at least 9 months a year and some of the most beautiful scenery you are ever likely to find. All this made me realise that the Tourism Board’s slogan of “A World in One Country” has never been more true.
A short history:
South Africa’s ethnic population has been around for many hundreds of years. There is still today a rich mixture of tribes and different cultures, but sadly they are becoming more westernised. South Africa was first colonised by the Dutch in roughly 1651, to be used...

Premier Inn Blackpool - value for money
Advantages: Clear, bright, comfortable, efficient
Disadvantages: Not the most attractive of locations, need ID if you pay cash
...arrive at. Instead, the hotel is a couple of miles south of Blackpool North station, but close to Blackpool South. The taxi fare there was just over £5, which was not too bad. However, the tram, which runs all the way along the sea front promenade, is just a ten minute walk away, the far one way being £1.50.
There is a large car park outside the hotel which was never more than half full when I was there. Although this is a fee-paying car park, hotel guests are given a pass to display in the window while they are there, entitling them to free parking.
= CHECKING IN AND RECEPTION=
Checking in was very smooth and efficient. Although I had been sent the booking reference and had the form with me, my name was sufficient for the receptionist. Unlike most other hotels I have stayed in recently, I had to pay up front, which I did...

South Yorkshire - A Summary In Under 1800 Words.
Advantages: Lots of contrast, Plenty of attractions and history
Disadvantages: Quite Industrial in areas
..., whilst the East Riding of Yorkshire had been named first East Yorkshire then Humberside, before its present name of the East Riding of Yorkshire.
The principal settlement in South Yorkshire is Sheffield. With a population of 512,242 this is the County's only City and one of the largest City's in the UK. The other principal settlements within the County are Doncaster with a population of 127,851, Rotherham with a population of 248,174, and Barnsley with a population of 72,000. Each of these settlements gives its name to a Metropolitan Borough e.g. the City of Sheffield, the Borough of Doncaster, the Borough of Rotherham and the Borough of Barnsley.
In 1986 the Metropolitan County of South Yorkshire was abolished and control was given to the Administrative centres of each Borough. South Yorkshire still exists as a Ceremonial County within...

Nowhere in Africa is a Must-See Epic
Advantages: gorgeous, addresses important issues
Disadvantages: the message can feel a bit obvious, middle is slow
...at times, but it was difficult to tell because I don't speak German, so I had to rely on the subtitles.
However, Nowhere in Africa is also very complex and much more accessible than other films of epic proportion. Whereas other movies have one crucial scene that everyone talks about, one could discuss the nuances of Nowhere in Africa for hours.
One scene that I thought was particularly well done was when Regina is older and leaves the house in the middle of the night. The age progression of Regina's character is so flawless that I wasn't sure whether or not two actresses portray her at different stages. I thought they might have halted production for a few years so that Lea Kurka could grow up, but, indeed, she is replaced by an older actress, Karoline Eckertz, later in the film. Both Reginas are excellent. When Jettel hears the door...

South Africa Wins The Cup?
Advantages: Worlds greatest tournament
Disadvantages: Are you crazy?
...South Africa’s bid and would come back there to help them promote it if he is needed. The South Africans have managed to pull a masterstroke. Sponsorship from the private sector is in place as well as support from the most powerful men in World football who happen to come from Europe. Compare this with Nigeria’s bid that continues to stutter and stumble in all directions. It would be nice if they could at least get George Weah who is well known all over the world to endorse the event never mind other personalities!
Nigeria also recently held a high profile friendly against the World Champions Brazil but the organisation left a bad taste in the mouth. Now before anyone goes accusing me of misinforming you, I must say it was NOT Nigeria’s 2010 Committee that organised this friendly but sports promotion company OSMI. However...

South Africa's coastal ecosystem in a nutshell.
Advantages: Displays relate to South Africa in particular.
Disadvantages: A little sparse in places
...Situated close to the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, the aquarium only costs about £3 to get in. I found it a little sparse, but they do have some great stuff there. It really depends on what you like, I am fascinated by the sea, but am too scared to ever go scuba diving, so a place like this is fantastic for me.
They have a fantastic display of moray eels, on loan from Singapore, so I don?t know how long they will be they for. They have many sharks and other large species in a huge 2-storey tank, which you can view from different areas, and also walk through the glass tunnel. The Japanese spider crabs are incredible, they just don?t look real and are huge, you could them as dining chairs!! They also have the usual type of aquarium ?stuff?, but particularly related to South Africa and its coastline. It is very well laid out...

Klein Karoo - a small heaven(South Africa)
Advantages: The attractions and the peace and quietness
Disadvantages: The temprature scan get hot!!
...I grew up in the LIttle Karoo and the place was an ostrich mecca! Still is but they mostly sell the meat which is very healthy. The Klein Karoo has lots of attractions. The main town is Oudtshoorn and most of the tourism attraction are near it. There's the Kango Caves which is a must to see. Then there are the Highgate and Safari Ostrich farms where you can ride on ostriches. On the way to the Kango caves there's the buffelsdrift game farm where you can walk with elephants and enjoy a nice meal and have a view over the buffelsdrift dam. There are also a place near the Cango caves where you can ride on camels. There are also a few whine estates near Oudtshoorn where you can see how they produce one of our local wines Grundheim. There are also the crocodile farm and snakepark.
You would like peace and quietness of the Little Karoo....
