West of the Wall by Marcia Preston. A good read.

Advantages: Good story set in an interesting period of time.
Disadvantages: Slightly unbelievable at times.

Review of West of the Wall - Marcia Preston

Comfortable and quiet in Preston

Advantages: Easy access, Marriott standards and deals, very comfortable
Disadvantages: Some delays in restaurant

...great value at £23.50 per head. On the Saturday, after an enjoyable day out in Preston and Fleetwood, we had a great time sitting outside the front of the hotel with a drink, watching the wedding parties come and go, and the various musicians entertain them. We had been rather worried that we could not book our evening meal until 8pm, and this proved to be justified. Our theory is that is there is a 9pm watershed in most hotel restaurants and if you are not finished by then, things go pear-shaped. Sure enough, we enjoyed our starters and main courses but had to wait around 30 minutes for our desserts, although at least one couple waited longer and then they walked out. Again, the general food and service were great apart from that problem. There appeared to be a children's menu and the staff were particularly helpful with young guests...

Premier Travel Inn - Preston East

Advantages: close to the motorway, cheap
Disadvantages: TOO close to the motorway!

...We have recently travelled up to Scotland from Devon and on the way home needed to break up the 12 hour journey. We stopped at Premier Travel Inn - Preston East. This Travel Inn is literally right beside the southbound motorway near junction 31a northbound. We were travelling Southbound, so had to come off at junction 31, join the northbound and come off at junction 31a. PRICE ++++++ We paid £48 for a room which is Friday to Sunday rates. Monday to Thursday would cost £51. BOOKING ++++++++ We had an AA Road Atlas with us and also a directory of all the Premier Travel Inn's in the country. This is a very handy booklet as it has directions and location for each Travel Inn. I telephoned the Inn and was put through to a central number as they were busy. Preston In the Premership.

Advantages: Playes as a Team.
Disadvantages: Not as much money as the Premiership teams

...In my opinion Preston North End are one of the better sides in the First Division. This is because they have got a good fanatical foundation and halfway through building a 30,000 seater stadium (said to finished in 20002). North End have just sold thousands of extra shares and is expected to get £7.5m. North End also is host to the Official Football Museum. This will also bring in extra money for players and improvements. 1998/1999 season Preston North End played Arsnal in the FA Cup at home. And in the first 20 mins Preston was in the lead 2-0. But then the money of the premiership came through and won the match 4-2. My point is that Preston are more than able to Hack it in the First Division and well be able to manage in the Premership. ...Please note that whilst Ciao rates the Preston Swallow as a two star hotel - all publicity material relating to it, as well at the hotel itself, shows this as a three star hotel. WHY DID WE BOOK THE SWALLOW PRESTON? The weather turning nasty and the nights drawing in signal the time of year for RICHADA to play Santa Claus with the customers, going out and about, shaking hands and delivering calendars and company literature. My home for nine months

Advantages: It's now a city, good shops, bars and eateries, fairly cheap
Disadvantages: If you come from a big city, Preston will look really rubbish

Guys Thatched Hamlet Lancaster

Advantages: Lovely food, good prices.

GUY'S THATCHED HAMLET Guys Thatched Hamlet is situated 5 miles north of Preston, off the A6 Preston to Lancaster Road, its very easy to find if your driving along the A6 road, you will see signs for it all along, and its a sharp left or right (depending which way your going obviously!) into the hamlet. Guys thatched Hamlet is a collection of small buildings which house a "tavern" i.e. a lovely little pub, a restaurant, ice cream parlour, and a collection of holiday apartments. All situated in a little hamlet, where the Lancaster Canal runs through allowing you to moore up and go and grab a drink and a bite to eat. But also allows the children to feed the ducks, with the "ducky bag" available when you have eaten in either the pub or restaurant, or of course with your own duck food!!!
