How Pride and Prejudice grew on me

Advantages: Cleverly constructed, multi-layered, funny if you're used to the language
Disadvantages: Period language could be awkward to some

...Jane Austen - not exactly "forbidden fruit". Lady Chatterley - certainly. Moll Flanders - possibly. But Jane Austen? Starched cravats, tea parties and everybody calling each other "Miss Bennet" or "Mr. Gardiner" insteady of Lizzy or Edward? To my eleven-year-old self, absolutely! Costume dramas weren't really staple viewing at home when I was smaller - my parents watched Cracker instead - so I missed the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice serial and became quietly obsessed with reading the novel. I never studied Jane Austen at school (to my annoyance) but perhaps it's just as well - studying every little detail, identifying symbolism and deciding what role or stereotype each character represented might have ruined the book for me. Although "bright", I was too unfamiliar with period language at eleven to fully appreciate Pride and Prejudice...

Disadvantages: Sometimes confusing.

Darcy's Pride and Eliza's Prejudice

Advantages: Feels good, happy.
Disadvantages: Very long, approximately 5 hours.

William Shakespeare brought terror and my preference for modern novels stopped me from diving into Jane Austen's books and programs made about the times prior to the 20th Century were a definitely no no. Advantages: funny plot
Disadvantages: goes on to much... more your average fast pace reader... this a comical romance!!

...!! It's a really good book to study becuase it's just so funny and you can also see so many films and how they've depicted the novel. I would recommend you to watch the BBC Pride and Prejudice because it contains everything in the novel. The new pride and prejudice film featuring Kiera Knightley is an edited version but just as enjoyable to watch!...

The Asian Version of Pride and Prejudice

Advantages: Beautifully shot film
Disadvantages: Making Mr Darcy an American

Lalita and Darcy get together after he saves her youngest sister, Lahki, from the clutches of Johnny Wickman played by Daniel Gilles. All the characters are based on the characters in Pride and Prejudice. Some more loosely than others. 19th century people don't fit in our 21st century multi-cultural society which is when the film is set. Although, a continent and a few centuries lay between the book and the film, the underlying story is the basically the same even using the same initials, for example LB Lizzie Bennet or Lalita Bakshi. Disadvantages: Low on action. One to see with the girls.

...Pride and Prejudice is the story of Elizabeth Bennet, one of a family of five sisters in a English lower gentry family at the start of the 19th century. Their mother is determined to see them married and secure because their estate is entailed to pass to their nearest male relative on their father's death. The BBC filmed a TV series of Pride and Prejudice which first aired in 1995 and starred Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet and Colin Firth as Darcy, but there has not been a big screen version apart from and since 1940 when Aldous Huxley adapted a film from a stage version. The Oscar-winning 1940 film stared Greer Garson as Elizabeth Bennet and Laurence Olivier as Darcy. I've seen both the 1995 BBC series and the 1940 film, and for a lot of fans of the book such as me, the 2005 film will stand on how it stands up to its predecessors...

My prejudice to Pride and Prejudice!

Advantages: Strong characters and themes throughout
Disadvantages: none that come to mind

...I first read a Jane Austen novel as an A Level English Literature student. The first novel I read was Mansfield Park and to say that I was not overly enthusistic about reading Pride and Prejudice is no overstatement! However, I did not let this prejudice deter me! I was glad to be proved wrong. From the onset, Pride and Prejudice provides us with an interesting array of characters, themes (overt and underlying ones) and situations which keep us completely hooked from beginning to end. I had the good fortune to read the novel before the BBC adaptation. Although the BBC version was a good take on this classic, had I not read Austen's novel first I believe my initial view of the story and characters would have been tarnished by the TV version.
