Excellent all-round printer, perfect for a networked home

Advantages: can pick one up for £34

...ink jet printers seem to be the common solution to every home personal computers hard copy situation but buying a cheap printer can work out costlier in the long run. The problem is the cartrages. Even a cheap inkjet printer can be brought for about £40 squid and have quite a decent quality of print but cartrages range from £15 squid to up to £40 and if the whole family are using it on regualar basis they mightent last very long. There are also special paper to buy like glossy for photo's and options to put the printer into a different mode to specialize for photos so these can take up more ink then in draft mode, so its important to look at the whole perspective on what the printer is to be used for and cartridge price before getting one in....

Good quality A3 Inkjet Printer

Advantages: Fast A4 & A3 printing, good quality from HP
Disadvantages: Large in size

...the cyan is empty, you can just buy a new cyan cartridge. Ink cartridges can be purchased for around £16 each . The printer also has replaceable printheads (again, cost of around £16 each), which cuts down the cost of repair, and without having to call out engineers, you can just buy a replacement and fit them extremely easily - if I can do it, anyone can! Monthly print cycle maximum is a recommended 5,000 pages per month. The printer comes with a standard 1 year warranty, and an upgrade to this is available from HP. Print quality is superb. The maximum resolution available for printing is 2400 x 1200 dpi, which gives fantastic photo quality. Print speed is also good, starting at 16 pages per min draft black and white, down to 0.2 pages per min at full A4 photo best. Overall a good, cost effective, reliable, heavy-duty A4 & A3 printer...

HP Inkjet 1200d

Advantages: Very fast cheap to run printer
Disadvantages: quite large for home use

...I bought an HP 1200d Printer in April of this year. I chose this printer because the reviews I had read were excellent and I wanted a printer with seperate ink cartridges that were quock and were in my privce range. This printer met all 3 conditions. The print speed of text is very very quick, colour printing is quick but photos are fairly slow however the quaality is excellent. The printer has a built in duplex facility. The 1200d is a little bigger than most ink jets, at 8.3in by 19.9in by 18.3in (HWD). The ink cartridges are separate from the print heads, so you have to install four of each also there are 4 seperate print heads to deal with. HP says each cartridge can manage 1,750 pages. The beauty of seperate cartridges is that if the Cyan runs out you just change the cyan you do not loose the remainder of teh other...

HP D1470 Inkjet Printer.

Advantages: Very cheap, durable, and excellent for the amateur computer user.
Disadvantages: Tray a little too small, and a few issues with packing the tray with paper.

Lexmark 3 in 1 Multifunctional Printer (X3480)

Advantages: Reasonably price for a 3 in 1 MULTIFUNCTIONAL Unit.
Disadvantages: So easy to accidently switch off.

...inches. Spec: Its print size is 4800 x 1200 dpi, so what you print comes out quite reasonable. They claim a printing page rate of 17 pages per minute! (Yea, right. Only on a good day, downhill and thats with the wind behind). Try 1 page roughly every 10 seconds (so 6 a minute) if full of words. The paper shoot holds 100 sheets they say! Put 50 in and its fine. It does borderless photo-printing up to A4. It can take digital camera memory card readers. Scanning is at 600 x 1200 dpi. This is a windows compatable printer (and works on Vista, unlike my last printer!!). This is also PictBridge Compatible. Use: Has JUST 7 buttons on the front (and one of them is the on/off). Its easy to operate and doing copies is easy. The paper loads fairly easily at the rear though the paper guide slider has a very flimsy feel. Does it work?: Yes...

Top of the range inkjet - amazing printer

Advantages: Quick, amazing text quality, nice photo quality, computer doesn't have to be on to opporate, auto-alignment, the list goes on
Disadvantages: Bitch to install, no tools in windows toolbox, more suited to business environment

This is a small sensor so that the printer can check how well it's printing, and align the printheads accordingly - it looks amazing, and also checks the paper type before printing (e.g. if you insert photo paper the quality will be tweaked to suit photos). AUTO PRINTHEAD ALIGNMENT The printer does this to perfect print quality, however, as I said before, the printer does this EVRY TIME it starts - which would be fine except it uses up 2 sheets of paper! Pressing cancel does skip this however. QUALITY Ahhhhhhhh, heaven. Text printing is exactly like what you'ld see from a laser printer, at 1200x600dpi. This is the ONLY HP inkjet capable of this. The photo quality runs at 1200x600 and produces excellent results...

XXX dpi + XXX ppm = confusion

...You?d think that with an A-Level in computing I?d have a decent idea what to look for in a printer, no chance. When I went to get my latest printer (although a good few months ago now!!) I knew that I needed something that produced a decent level of quality print, was reasonably priced and fairly quick. Unfortunately knowing and understanding are two totally different things! When I told the sales rep this he started talking in dots per inch and pages per minute ? all of which went straight over my head!! He showed me several different printers and edged me towards the Epson Stylus C40UX. Although looks were not important in the buying process I was quite pleased with what I saw.
