Privilege Insurance - Apalling and inefficient customer service
Advantages: Price
Disadvantages: Poor service generally; pedantic; lack of response to complaints; ridiculous hold times
...I had always driven Company Cars until last November when I was made redundant and purchased my own car and insurance for the first time. Privilege were the cheapest quote I found.
I set up the policy on line and was advised that I could have a no claims discount if I provided proof from my previous employer's insurer that I had made no claims. I requested this via my employer but it was not forthcoming and I contacted Privilege in Jan 09 to advise them that I had not deliberately 'overlooked' this but was having difficulty due to the redundancy circumstances. They then cancelled my policy in February. At this point I was fairly sanguine as I had not provided the proof. I reinstated the policy with zero no claims on the understanding that when I managed to obtain proof of no claims I would receive a backdated refund of the difference...

It's a Privilege to have good insurance.
Advantages: Low cost, swift claims handling
Disadvantages: Minor niggles with paperwork not being filled in correctly
...I used to have a car insurance policy with Direct Line (same company as Privilege) but when I had a high quote two years ago, I shopped around.
Privilege gave me protected no claims, guaranteed hire car and legal protection for about £70 less than my original quote.
I must admit, there were a few niggles - when I moved house they changed my address but not my postcode, when I changed my car they changed the make and model but not the colour. Nothing a quick phone call couldn't sort out.
The real test came in Feb. this year, when another woman decided to drive straight into the back of me. This resulted in damage to my car, and myself and my daughter in agony with whiplash injuries.
Luckily we were both on half term holiday, and had time to sort the claim out and rest for a week. One call to privilege and I had calls from the garage...

Free Insurance
Advantages: Price, service, friendliness, efficiency
Disadvantages: Awful hold music!!!
...I received 2 years worth of insurance with Privilege when I purchased my new Nissan in the Summer of 1999. And mightily impressed with them I have been.
Obviously I have no premium to pay but when I asked them for a quote ready for when my free insurance ran out they were easily the best quote I received.
My insurance package from Nissan allowed me to add up to £1,000 of extras to my car, and notifying them was a quick and painless experience. A quick phone call to their 0800 number, telling them what was being added, and handing over my debit card number for an administration fee of £40 and it was all done and dusted. No problems at all. My new documentation was sent out immediately and was in my arms within 48 hours.

Privelige Insurance worst service ever
Advantages: Low Price
Disadvantages: No service, cannot get through to customer service, information incorrect after 3 attempts
...After 12 years with Direct Line, I changed to Privilege, same company, cheaper price. My wife had a no fault accident, tried to speak to someone on a mobile phone following the accident, constantly being passed around, left for over four and a half hours on the side of the road waiting for the car to be recovered. The phone bill exceeded £7.00, problems getting through to customer services, as per other reviewer's comment's, kept being passed around each passing the buck.
Three weeks later, still waiting for a response to my complaint letter. Be advised the company also is part of the Direct Line and Green Flag group. If they agree for the vehicle to be recovered it will be Green Flag, if you try to contact customer services, you sit in Direct Lines insurance quotation queue and pay for it. A review/cautionary tale of Post Office Car Insurance!
Advantages: cheap car insurance, some polite and friendly staff
Disadvantages: stressful, costly, some lying staff, hassle, grief, don't touch with a barge pole
...My experience of Post Office Motor Insurance was sadly not a happy one.
I took advantage of a cash back offer for taking out a comprehensive Motor Insurance policy, within a short time the documents arrived, but then I found a better offer. As I was still well within the 14 day okay-to-change-your-mind 'cooling-off' period, I cancelled the policy and took one out with the alternative provider.
Somehow the Post Office, despite being very pleasant and understanding on the telephone, and having had the Certificate of Insurance documents returned to them as requested, somehow charged my debit card for the full amount anyway.
I thought this must simply be an error, however I was concerned as my bank account was not exactly flush at the time, I had after all just paid the OTHER insurance provider for their policy, and lots of other bills...

Swinton Car Insurance - Nice and Easy
Advantages: Price, Local Branch, Claims
Disadvantages: None so far
...Why choose Swinton Insurance!
It was the dreaded time for me to look for car insurance again as per usual I check all the price comparison websites. Swinton came up the cheapest on two of them, so I decided to go direct to their own website to see what price was available and read a bit more about them.
The main reasons I decided to go with Swinton was:
*Competitive price ? Some £38 cheaper than the next best price and over £50 cheaper than my renewal price.
*Local Shops ? I am one of these people who try to keep local companies open, well Swinton has office up and down the country so rather than call the dreaded call centre you can call the local shop.
*Cash back ? As usual I always check the cash back sites, and to my delight Swinton was on Quidco. So when I taken the policy out online I got any additional £50 cash...

More Than Car Insurance - make a claim at your own peril

Disadvantages: Interrogational questioning - should you ever need to make a claim. Not for the faint hearted
...Unfortunately our car was damaged by another car whilst we were stationary, waiting to pull away from a junction. We duly reported the accident to More Than Insurance and have regretted doing so ever since. Since informing them of the accident two months ago we have been interviewed on the phone twice by a very aggresive style by a young woman who would put the xxxxx to shame. You are made to feel as though you are guilty - but all we did was claim on our car insurance. We are not one of those people you see often hear about on the news who drive around without car insurance- we take our responsibilities very seriously and always have road tax and car insurance.

Morethan Car Insurance. Cheap but not Cheerful :(
Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Not UK call centre when making a claim and very unprofesional staff.
...Well I insured my daughters car with More Than because like we all do, because it was cheap. You search them all and insure with the cheapest, and in this case More Than was the cheapest which was fine because I had saved some money.
All was well until one day someone crashed into the rear of my daughter's car pushing her into someone else. The car was not driveable so we had to arrange a courtesy car, the advert says you only have to wait 2 hours , we got one the next day. Anyway that was not the main problem.
In the end all was ok but dealing with the call centre ( not in the uk) was the nightmare. The amount of phone calls to the call centre dealing with the claim was unreal. The amount of times I rang and they would put me through to another department and I would explain everything then they would say ring back later , then...

Swinton Car Insurance
Advantages: Easy to contact, good website, good value
Disadvantages: None whatever
...It's that time of year again - just after Christmas co-incides with when I bought my car (off my mum!) last year having just passed my driving test. Bit embarrassing leaving it so long, but money was tight and the busses were good to and from work .....
Anyway, went through Moneysupermarket.com to find a suitable insurer for my 2nd year on the road and came across Swinton. They were not the cheapest on the list for my circumstances, but they did offer everything I needed (plus legal cover as an option) and £50 cash-back after the policy has been in place for 90 days which made it cheaper than the other options anyway.
Their website was easy to navigate and make the appropriate payment and the confirmation page came up with useful details like the address and telephone number of the nearest Swinton office. The only thing that...

Do not touch Swifcover Motor Insurance with a bargepole!!
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Totally useless
...My car windscreen was smashed by vandals. I phoned the windscreen 0800 number for Autoglass ,provided with my insurance policy , at 9am on Friday morning. I was advised someone would phone me back within 2 hours. This they did, and advised me they could replace my windscreen on Wednesday!! I phoned the claims number (an 0871 no.) and was put on hold for an age, while a syrupy prerecorded voice advised that the operators were busy "giving a customer the same personal service that we will soon be giving you". -(No into' on what number you are in the queue)
I finally spoke to a female who told me to try another of their authorised repairers - the RAC windscreen replacement service and gave me another 0800 number. I asked her if I could use a local firm and was advised they would not pay more than £100 if I did this. I said I had...
