Puerto Rico has welcomed us as a family, and as a couple on about 7 occasions. I suppose the real attraction is the near-guaranteed sunshine. But I'll try and give you a feel for the whole town of Puerto Rico....I hope I can do a great PR job on PR GETTING THERE : Flights leave several UK destinations for Gran Canaria's Las Palmas airport, and you can reckon on a flight of about 4 hours. ...Having never been to Gran Canaria before booking our last minute deal there was like walking into a room with your eyes shut. I was not to be disappointed! We booked with Virgin Sun (I believe virgin sun finished just after we flew with them - and virgin are now only doing trans atlantic flights). We were met at the airport and taken to Puerto Rico. As we came around the mountain the rep announced that our apartments were "up there" (Right at the top of the mountain!) my jaw nearly hit the floor. The veiw looked amazing. When we got to our apartments (Monte Parasio apartments) we went to our rooms. They were spacious, everything you needed for self catering accomodation. Cupboards filled with plate/pans etc, sofa bed, coffe table, dinning table and chairs, 'pay as you go' TV, batchroom, bedroom with wardrobe with hangers, saftey...

Puerto Rico (Gran Canaria)

Advantages: Ideal location to suit all ages
Disadvantages: Hotels set high in the hillside- but that wouldn't spoil your holiday!

...So.... I booked my third holiday to Puerto Rico! On my first one, I had such a great time and made so many fond memories that I just had to go again. Fast forward 3 years and I made my second journey. Once again the holiday blew me away- I never thought I could have enjoyed it more than my first time but it exceeded all expectations. ...Searching through pages and pages of websites for a nice, inexpensive place to stay was getting very draining until one place caught my eye. The Portonovo apartments in Puerto Rico. Four friends and I stayed at these apartments for a week in May this year and had a fantastic time. We got one bedroom apartments with two people sharing one and three in another. Two bedroom apartments are also available. The hotel offers a courtesy room for your bags, a currency exchange and a telephone. In the apartments were a twin room and a sofa bed in the lounge area. The bedroom was a good size with a large wardrobe, dressing table with mirror (which we were all fighting over), and bedside cabinets with lamps. ...As it's that time of year when everyone starts flicking through the brochures to find their summer holiday destination, so I thought I'd review Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria which was our destination last September. Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands (after Tenerife and Fuerteventura), and although owned by Spain, is just over 200km from the north coast of Africa, which explains its climate. The north and south of the island do experience differences however, with the north more cloudy and cooler than the hot south. We picked Puerto Rico, a resort on the southern coast. ...If you are looking for an authetic Spanish experience, then Puerto Rico is probably not the place for you. Many of the bars and restraunts in the two main shopping areas cater for British tourists, boasting authentic British dishes from the full English Breakfast to Sunday Roast. Meals are very reasonable with a steak dinner coming in at around £7. Be warned portion sizes can be massive so it may be best to stick to main courses if you dont have the biggest of appetites (one travelling companion was presented with a plate of 3 chicken breasts plus salad and chips when she ordered a chargrilled chicken dish). In terms of beaches the new beach at playa armedes is the place to visit. This man made beach is exquisitely clean with close facilities. ...I have been to the island of Gran Canaria twice, both times staying in the Puerto Rico resort. The first time was my first trip with my family abroad and had chosen Puerto Rico becuase it appealed to us. The second time was when i went with my girlfriend, and chose Puerto Rico because I had loved it so much the first time. The airport is about an hours drive from Puerto Rico, which can be a bit of a nightmare if it is very hot and you are tired. The first thing that hits you is the heat...it is ALWAYS very hot. It is the sunniest city on the Island, if it's a tan you want - go here! Their language is Spanish but we didn't really know any at all and got on fine as English is widely spoke. The weather It was really really warm every day we went, the day we went to the water park in Maspalomas, people said the temperature in Puerto Rico was unbearable so I'm glad we went away.
