PUERTO RICO - Gran Canaria

...As it's that time of year when everyone starts flicking through the brochures to find their summer holiday destination, so I thought I'd review Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria which was our destination last September. Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands (after Tenerife and Fuerteventura), and although owned by Spain, is just over 200km from the north coast of Africa, which explains its climate. The north and south of the island do experience differences however, with the north more cloudy and cooler than the hot south. We picked Puerto Rico, a resort on the southern coast. The flight from Cardiff took approximately 3 1/2 hours. Driving into Puerto Rico, the first thing that becomes apparent is that the resort is built into a huge valley in the mountains. Puerto Rico (Gran Canaria)

Advantages: Ideal location to suit all ages
Disadvantages: Hotels set high in the hillside- but that wouldn't spoil your holiday!

...So.... I booked my third holiday to Puerto Rico! On my first one, I had such a great time and made so many fond memories that I just had to go again. Fast forward 3 years and I made my second journey. Once again the holiday blew me away- I never thought I could have enjoyed it more than my first time but it exceeded all expectations. And two years on, i've booked to go again! Puerto Rico is set in a location surrounded by a volcano- hard to believe but true! Its beautiful beach and clear waters makes Puerto Rico the perfect place to holiday whether you enjoy lounging on the beach or soaking up the rays around the hotel pool. Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria

...After having booked months in advance with the great Going Places me a two friends on a dusk September evening were heading off to Gran Canaria. The flight was great - very comfortable, even if a little long (appox 4 hours). We had the usual: food, film etc and a very friendly service from Airtours. After arriving at Las Palmas airport we were efficiently taken to our resort of Puerto Rico. The transfer was quite long as Puerto Rico is one of the most southern resorts on the island, although it was interesting seeing other resorts as we travelled down. The appartments were lovely: clean, fresh and close to well...everything: shops, bars, beach. Our view was also to die for. We stayed at the Tamanaco appartment complex. Puerto Rico - South Coast of Gran Canaria

Advantages: Predictable Weather,only 4 hours away
Disadvantages: Peak season is unbearable

...I have been to Gran Canaria several times but have only ever stayed in two resorts.MasPalomas ans Puerto Rico Lets deal with Ma Palomas quickly, everytime I go there whether for a day trip of a 2 week stay the weather was always a bit iffy,not cold but sort of grey and a bit windy.This resort is famous for it sand dunes blown in on the winds from the nearby Sahara desert, thats great until the wind gets up and you get shot blasted and end up looking like a heavily sugared doughnut. The resort of Mas palomas is well spread out and a car would be useful if not you will have very limited entertainment. A Grand Time In Gran Canaria

I was really interested in exploring the Island and seeing the other resorts, such as Las Palmas, Puerto Rico, and the mountains that occupy Gran Canaria and their highest mountain point in Pozo De Les Nieves. To do this I had to hire a car. Canaria Autos were recommended to me, to which I hired a jeep which cost me 60 euros a day, and after haggling a little, I was able to hire it for three days at the cost of 140 euros, not too bad I thought. ...Having never been to Gran Canaria before booking our last minute deal there was like walking into a room with your eyes shut. I was not to be disappointed! We booked with Virgin Sun (I believe virgin sun finished just after we flew with them - and virgin are now only doing trans atlantic flights). We were met at the airport and taken to Puerto Rico. As we came around the mountain the rep announced that our apartments were "up there" (Right at the top of the mountain!) my jaw nearly hit the floor. The veiw looked amazing. When we got to our apartments (Monte Parasio apartments) we went to our rooms. They were spacious, everything you needed for self catering accomodation. ...I have just come back off my holiday to the amazing resort Playa del Ingles. I walked along the Dunes at Maspalomas. I would differently go back there again. There is something for everyone at Gran Canaria for example mini-golf, swimming, go-karting for kids and for others windsurfing, sea fishing, scuba diving, jet skiing, golf, tennis and squash. They also have waterparks and camel safaris plus zoos. Three of the main zoos are Palmitos Park, Reptilandia Park and Parque De Crocodilos. First of all there is no time difference. You need no jabs. The buses are very cheap and come regularly. Car hire is available and petrol is 31p per litre. Tempratures on average are between 65-75F. The coolest months are from December to April, but even then the lowest it gets is 70F. Summer tempratures are from 75-80F. This...

...First time in Gran Canaria - first time in Puerto Rico. Can't wait to go back. Better than the best expectations I ever had. Where Is it? Puerto Rico is on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria. It is the sunniest city on the Island, if it's a tan you want - go here! Their language is Spanish but we didn't really know any at all and got on fine as English is widely spoke. The weather It was really really warm every day we went, the day we went to the water park in Maspalomas, people said the temperature in Puerto Rico was unbearable so I'm glad we went away. It was 34 degrees the hottest I saw. There is a bit of a breeze, which makes it more bearable but you have to be careful of getting burnt as you don't realise just how strong the sun is. Gran Canaria. Really GRAND holiday!

Advantages: It has the wow-factor!
Disadvantages: I couldnt think of one, except the souvenirs.

Having been to Gran Canaria several times, it is where we will focus in this review. Gran Canaria Flying into Las Palmas airport is usually a brilliant experience itself. A few clouds will probably be sitting on the top peaks of this volcanic island - but the rest will be crystal clear - just like the sea around it.
