Who needs a Wii?

Advantages: Totally different, gives new challenges to veteran gamers
Disadvantages: No hi-def support and Gamecube specs

...Wii sports. My dad has no games playing experience... This is Nintendos aim - to get new players on board such as parents and girls. I must say they will succeed. My girlfriend has already requested we get our own machine and my older sister, 30 years old is also going to get one. ::Conclusion:: Many pundits have labelled the Wii as a second machine... an after thought for serious games players. Although this may be true for serious players, the occassional players such as my girlfriend are going to go for this anytime. It starts up immediately with almost no loading times, true pick up and play. Is cheap for the next generation (PS3 is rumoured to be £400). With games like Mario and already released Zelda - this machine is not going to flop and don't be suprised if it outdoes Sony and Microsoft as they get distracted in the fight...

Match of the day just on a Sunday

Advantages: good football action with decent pundits
Disadvantages: on too late in my opinion

...Match of the day has for a long time now been the best football highlights show on television. With the ever expanding live coverage of games on sky sports many matches are now played on Sundays, which limits the number of matches that can be featured on the Saturday show. In response to this the BBC launched Match of the day 2 in August 2004, a similar programme to Match of the day shown at 10:30pm on Sunday nights (maybe a little late for younger viewers). The show is hosted by Adrain Chiles, a funny brummy who supports West Bromwich Albion. He is usually joined by two other pundits, which change week upon week. Advantages: Worthwhile alternative to BBC and ITV sports coverage
Disadvantages: On at late times - get to bed sonny!

...Live and Dangerous is the late night Channel 5 sports show. Quite how it got that name I don?t know, but that is frankly an irrelevance. The show is made up of two hosts (they have quite a pool of them, led by the excellent Kevin Day and Mark Webster) and a selection of guests or pundits for interviews. These cross a number of sports, although football is prevalent. The guests are normally of a high standard, especially for those of us who aren?t obsessed with Premiership football. The pundits are not bad either. Naturally there are links and plugs for other Channel 5 sports programmes, but these are kept to sensible amounts of time and the programme links pretty well. To end each show there is a look at the back pages of the next day?s newspapers, nice for those of us who aren?t morning people and can?t focus on television...

Advantages: Excellent presentation of the Soccer scores - upto the minute
Disadvantages: Goals are sometimes scored during the Commercial intervals.

...and players performance are also highlighted here. It provides commentary of the matches that take place. A review of the latest missed chances, goal's, possession, and goal scoring chances. The good part of the show is the smoothness and rhythm of the presenting is good as it moves from one stadium Match to another on good cue timings. The personalities of the show make it a show worth watching. Some of the panelists who wear quite silly Head Phones will shout "goal" as soon as it is scored. Jeff Stelling will then introduce and call upon the individual who is reviewing that particular match. for a brief and most intriguing update. Yawning, moaning, groaning, laughter, and friendly banter among the pundits occurs. Jeff Stelling reads the Scores from a vidi Printer and it enables the viewer to keep up to date with latest Scores...

Jeff Stelling's Super Special Soccer Saturday

Advantages: Great presenter, great pundits, quick update, banter
Disadvantages: There aren't

...This is the ultimate football programme, there is no other like it (its way better than the BBC one). The show is presented by none other than Jeff Stelling. This is a guy who seems to know everything about football and will overreact to the goals, incidents and decisions during the day. Some might find the complete overreaction annoying, but I don't; its more funny than annoying. Alongside Jeff are normally 4 pundits who are each watching a live Premiership match. Regular pundits include: Frank McLintock, Charlie Nicholas, Alan McInally, Phil Thompson, Matthew Le Tissier, Alan Smith and Paul Merson. There are also match reporters across England and Scotland reporting on the afternoons games and there will be frequent reports from them. The highlight of this is Chris Kamara who is without a doubt a legend. He is very excitable...

There are worse ways to spend a saturday afternoon

Advantages: loads of stats and updates, good pundits, funny
Disadvantages: on for ages and can get annoying

Anyways...it wasn't until 1998 that the name officially changed to Gillette Soccer saturday as it is known today. Broadcasting of the programme starts at 12pm on sky sports 1 (channel 401) and sky sports news (channel 405), a whole three hours before the kick-off time, a bit early for me in truth - I normally tune in about twenty to three just to get the team news ahead of the big games. Advantages: It's Football, Good Layout, Pundits
Disadvantages: Fewer games, because of Sunday football

...One of the best things about Saturday nights is watching Match of the Day. Although, it has become less enjoyable as more and more big games are moved to Sundays and some games moved to during the week because of TV deals with Setanta and mainly Sky. All the highlights from the games (English Premier League) on Saturday are shown over generally a 1 and a half hour period. With the more eventful games given more air time than the less entertaining 0-0 draws. The show is presented by Gary Lineker (Ray Stubbs now and again) and has two pundits on each week. Alan Hansen is there almost every week (I don't remember him ever missing a show) and is joined the majority of the time by either Alan Shearer or Mark Lawrenson.
