Pure Digital Evoke 3 DAB Radio - top sound for a portable radio

Advantages: Great sound, great features, record to SD card
Disadvantages: Can't record one station whilst listening to another, no MW and not the most intuitive to use.

...I pondered for ages trying to decide between the Roberts RD55 and Pure's Evoke 3 as I wanted something that had functionality to pause and rewind, record (specifically to SD card), play FM stations, have stereo sound and play MP3's as well as one that gave great sound and could carry base and wouldn't distort at high volumes but I couldn't find anywhere on the net that compared the 2. I knew the Evoke 3 had won loads of awards but that was in 2006 and with it being 2008 I realised technology would have moved on so the newer RD55 could have improved or equal quality sound without having won any awards. In the end I realised the only option was to actually go into a shop and listen to the sound for myself (having a baby I'd put off doing that as it can be such a mission to get out these days!). evoke 3 radio,mp3 or ipod dock?

Advantages: jack of all trades
Disadvantages: price, only takes upto 1gb sd card i think

...I have had this radio about a year, first I was looking for an ipod dock so I could play tunes in the kitchen or outdoors. I soon decided a dock on its own is pretty pointless I may as well get a digital radio with an aux in socket. Finding the evoke 3 does has this and also takes and sd card (1gb) I bought one. The sd card holds about 10 cds worth of music so I rarely need the ipod aux in connector. I also got the charge pak so that the batterys are always charged ready to take my radio/mp3 anywhere i want. So a pretty expensive ipod dock maybe but it is small and neat and only needs a wire if your charging it or on the rare occasions I actually plug the ipod into it instead of using the built in mp3 player. Pure Evoke DAB Radio

...They've been around for a while now, and I finally decided to splash out £99.99 for a Pure DAB radio just before Christmas '03. The promise of static free sound and ease of use in a protable package were the main factors I considered in addition to hoping for a decent overall quality of sound. So how does the reality live up to the DAB hype? Well, first things first, it does do 'exactly what it says on the tin'. It is simplicity itself to use and the sound is certainly static free. It's a pleasant, somewhat 'retro', looking and small-ish unit in light wood and metal that appears to be decently built (more on this later). Advantages: Access To Digital Only Stations, Clear Reception, Looks Very Nice

...As Christmas approaches, it is quite likely that Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radios will once again be a very popular present. Last year I was given a Pure Evoke 1 radio and in the twelve months that I have owned it, I have been very impressed indeed. Appearance ---------------- The Pure Evoke1 radio is 210mmx175mmx110mm and is encased in wood veneer. It has a silver coloured metal handle and it's front, which contains the controls and single speaker, is also silver in colour. The speaker is on the left hand side of the unit and the controls take the form of a channel select knob and a volume knob. The screen is a two row dot-matrix screen which has a green backlight and dark text. The unit is mains powered with no option of battery only use. Pure and simple.

Advantages: Great sound from a small compact unit
Disadvantages: No battery capability

.... Hearing is believing. I listen mostly to planet rock and the sound is great for rock. It may only be mono but this can be made stereo by attaching a secondary speaker which Pure have available but at about £36 including postage but it can be attached to a home stereo via the auxillary output on the radio. The firmware is upgradable via the internet and a usb cable. I thoroughly recommend this radio....
