A venerable PVR

Advantages: Large memory, twin tuners, easy to use
Disadvantages: Some minor problems still unresolved, noisy

...We bought our Humax PVR-9200T not long after moving into our new house in December 2005. We decided on the Humax PVR as it came with a Freeview set up and the facility to record programmes along with a host of other minor functions. For those of you in the dark ages or still on analogue TV, PVR stands for 'Personal Video Recorder' and is essentially a computer type hard drive contained in a TV receiver box. This PVR is a link between my aerial and my TV so I can watch nice crisp digital TV, our PVR's work with cable or satellite TV. I decided to use the Humax for a year before writing a review on it, however I feel that I am now writing about something that is nearly obsolete with the recent push for High Definition TV (HDTV). Review of Humax PVR9200T

Best PVR Out There

Advantages: Easy to set up and use, picture quality, storage space
Disadvantages: None that I can think of other than being expensive

...I was looking for a new PVR late last year and the general concensus form the press was that this was the best unit on the market. The only downside reported in those reviews was that the programme guide took a long time to load up. In my experience this was not a problem - although the programme guide loads up from scratch every time you turn the unit on - if you usually leave the unit on standby this is never really a problem. The picture quality is top notch and the unit was really wasy to set up. As is always the case with digital TV recorders it took a bit of fiddling to get the picture settings on the unit and TV (16:9 on both)in sync but once that was sorted out the picture was crystal clear. Recording progammes is really easy - just highlight them on the programme guide or use the series record function. One...

Advantages: Cheap, Easy to use, If you are used to a VCR this is a revalation
Disadvantages: Small buttons on remote, brand name if you're a badge snob

...We decided to get rid of Sky and have a decent Freeview aerial network installed around our house so that we could have more channels for each room and save paying £20 a month for tv in one room with lots of channells that we very rarely watched. I'd heard everyone raving about Sky + and looked into the possibility of getting something similar to this for use on Freeview. I had read lots of reviews of these PVR's and thought that this would be the way to go. They pause live TV, replace the VCR by being able to record your favourite programmes, eliminate the use of tapes which alway's get thrown under the stand of the TV in our house and you get a much better quality of picture when watching playback. I actually didn't consider really the brand name as I had never really heard of Treakstor before and wasn't one hundred percent sure if they were reliable. However when I bought it in Currys last year and they had on offer many different memory capacities, ranging from 512Mb to 16Gb.
