Advantages: Food glorious food, the beautiful views Disadvantages: Excursions not handled well, not enough activities on port days
...For our 1st Wedding Anniversary myself and my husband decided to treat ourselves to a cruise. We are aged 24 and 27 and it was to be our very first cruise, very exciting! We looked at lots of companies and decided on the QE2 as it was well known, apparently had nice food and was within our price range and also visited places we wanted to go to.
We decided upon the Northern Odyssey 7 night cruise (29th July - 5th August 2006), leaving from southampton and stopping at:
- Bergen (Norway)
- Stavanger (Norway)
- Oslo (Norway)
- Rotterdam (Holland)
There were also 2 sea days in between.
Because it was our anniversary within 3 months of the date of our holiday we got a free upgrade, so we decided to pay for the highest cabin in the Mauretania grade and thus we were upgraded to the next cabin up which was the Coronia level. We...

Review of QE2 cruise ship
Advantages: Pure luxury, see loads of different countries in one holiday Disadvantages: Loads of stairs to climb.
...Picture this.
There he was, sitting at the computer, choosing a special holiday to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. "A cruise" he said "But I don't like boats," she said, "You won't know you are on a ship" he said, "Oh well, if you insist" she said reluctantly. Funnily enough I had really thought that we were going to fly to America and cruise around in an open topped car. Oh well.
So what did he want out of a holiday cruise?
Firstly not to have to fly anywhere.
So that meant Southampton.
Secondly to go on a plush ship.
So that meant the Cunard line.
Thirdly to cruise the Med.
Easy that one, lots of ships do that.
Fourthly, to go in September.
Well, he looked, he pondered and suddenly he said "Hey there is a great offer on the QE2". "Oh no, she said, that sounds terribly snobby, how can I tell anyone...

Review of QE2 cruise ship
Advantages: lots to see and do Disadvantages: quite expensive to stay
...On arrival at the 'small' Southampton airport and my subsequent wait for a taxi I began to wonder what Southampton had in store for me. On arrival in the city (about 15 minutes by taxi)I was pleased to find a well laid out city centre with a variety of shops, restaurants and bars. A 'must' visit is the harbour area, from where, if you are lucky, you might see the QE2. A few hundred yards further along is the Marina, with its variety of expensive sailing craft. The area has some great eating places for the whole family, from seafood to Pizza. I was sad to leave and will certainly return - one day....

Review of QE2 cruise ship
Advantages: Price (for London), Location, Standard of Rooms and incl breakfast Disadvantages: Facilities, Nearly always full for late bookings
...being visible from the QE2 bridge when travelling south.
There is a bar, all rooms are En-suite with TV (has sky sports!) and tea and cofee making facilities, and the restaurant area serves food in the evenings. There is no Swiming pool etc but then the express chain is not targetted at that market.
A free newspaper (The Independent) is provided every day and a bowl of fruit is in reception from which you are free to help yourself to an Item.
There is an Ice maker and vending machine near reception and you can take the ice back to your room.
Although they have a restaurant they are very relaxed about getting food delivered from local take aways (eg pizza hut) and will provide you with, on request, plates and cutlery.
The only problem that I continually face is that the room never has enough pillows (I like more than one...
Advantages: easy to get to,good places to stay, good city centre Disadvantages: no beach
...ive lived in southampton 90% of my life and would say that there is not many better places to live.it is quite a big city but with out the problems of trouble like manchester, liverpool, london etc.
we have a lot of history...invention of the spitfire...home port of the titanic,qe2 and many other famous liners.we have a premier league football team(just) and is home of craig david.in september, there will be the opening of one of the biggest shopping malls in europe with easy parking in the town centre, this will be well worth the visit.
we are known as the green city with our massive common and many city centre parks.we also have a top univercity and ocean study centre.southampton is well worth a visit, dont take my word for it,come and have a look around yourself...
Advantages: Lively, cosmopolitan city surrounded by stunning countryside and coast. Disadvantages: None really - something for everyone - but wrap up outdoors!
...Newcastle upon Tyne and its surrounding area is a great place to take a short break.
This thriving and increasingly cosmopolitan City has major attractions, many centred on the lively and bustling Quayside area which has seen major redevelopment and investment in recent years.
Within a short stroll from each other , along the Tyne, you can visit the Baltic Art Gallery, the Sage music hall, and the Milennium Bridge (which lights up in different colours at night and moves to allow ships higher up the Tyne - timetable for movements of the bridge are available at the Information Centre on the Gateshead side of the river). The river itself has hosted the Tall Ships Race in recent years and has been honoured with visits from the QE2 and the Ark Royal. The Tyne Bridge is the crossing point for the Great North Run in September /October...
Advantages: Price Disadvantages: Get wht you pay for at times
...In July 2000, my family of five took a two cruise on board the Sunbird. The holiday operators are Airtours.
We totally enjoyed the holiday which cost around £5000, then of course expenses and excursions, another £1000.
The cruise was in the Med, including Africa.
The boat was ageing but totally acceptable in decor and amenities.
The majority of the staff were warm and friendly.
It obviously wasn't the QE2 but for £6K for 5 what do you expect.
I would certainly take the Airtours Cruise again, and all my family totally enjoyed the holiday.
The food was good and varied, and you really can pile on the pounds.
Entertaiment was very good, and there always seemed to be something going on anytime night or day.
Tips were included but they do expect to be tipped as well....

Review of Airtours
Advantages: Relaxing... Disadvantages: ...or boring (depending on your p.o.v.)
...A very laid back instrumental album, beautifully played, but in an emotional vacuum.
The trouble with Mike Oldfield is that, although a brilliant instrumentalist, his music has become somewhat shallow, as his lap of luxury lifestyle has cushioned him from the slings and arrows of life. So whereas his early work had a real edge shaped by an unhappy childhood (his mother suffered from mental illness and became addicted to tranquilizers) and a stroppy adolescence (he left school at 15 rather than cut his long hair) his more recent CDs could easily be mistaken for elevator music.
This CD opens with the slightly nautical lilt of "The Song of the Sun" (reminiscent of Oldfield's "QE2") followed by "Celtic Rain" which although pleasant is like Test Card* music and not very Celtic... unlike "The Hero" which sounds uncannily like incidental...
