Review of Quad 22 L

Quad 11L speakers Look good. Sound good.

Advantages: Ease of positioning.
Disadvantages: Attract the dust.

...The Quad 11L is a bookshelf speaker, and it is the smallest in Quads 'L' range. The 12L is a slightly larger bookshelf speaker, and there are two floorstanders. The 21L and 22L. The 'L' series first appeared in 2001. Actually, there was the 10L which came out in 1997, which I believe was smaller than an 11L and was made for Quad by Spendor. So strictly speaking the 'L' series started then. But the current range dates from 2001, and is made by Quad. Prior to the 'L' range, Quad had not produced (or badged) any box speakers. They have been famous for their electrostatic speakers since 1957. These are not box type speakers, but are flat panel speakers and are quite expensive. The current range starts from £3500. So the box type speaker range was quite a departure for Quad. Whether it was a commercial decision or not I don't know. But...

21 - Counting cards pays off.

Advantages: An interesting story, more so because it is based upon fact.
Disadvantages: A bit predictable towards the end.

The film is centres on the character of Ben Campbell played by Jim Sturgess. He is a student at MIT in Boston, who desperately wants to get into Harvard Medical School to become a doctor. The film opens with him being interviewed for a scholarship there, as paying is out of the question. The interview doesn't appear to be going so well, but then the story turns to Ben in maths class and here his natural ability shines. The Quad 306 is a power amplifier. That means it just provides the power for the speakers. A separate control unit (or pre-amp) is needed to connect the other equipment to. ...The Quad 34 is a preamplifier, also known as a control unit. It doesn't actually do much amplifying, as that is done by the power amp. The 34 first appeared in 1981, and matches the 405 power amp and FM4 tuner. It was the second preamp in the Quad series '4', the other being the larger 44. The 34 has fewer interchangeable modules than the 44. With the 44, all of the inputs at the rear (for radio, aux, disc etc) were replaceable. With the 34, only the disc (turntable) input is swappable. This is so that different turntable cartridges (mm, mc) can be accomodated. It may be confusing to call the turntable input 'disc', but this was before the appearance of CDs.
