...Brief history?. Quarry bank mill has one of the only working water mill left in Britain. It is situated in the beautiful village of Styal, on the banks of the River Bollin The Mill was built by Samuel Greg in 1784, with the giant metal water wheel being built between 1816 and 1820. The original wheel broke in 1904 and was replaced years later by another iron wheel to make the Mill the proud owner of the last remaining working water wheel in Europe. The mill was used for the 'spinning' of cotton (and is still used for that purpose today but more for visitors to see rather than commercial use), it was soon the largest cotton producing factory in its time. Weaving was introduced to the Mill in 1834 by Robert Greg, (son of Samuel), so as to keep up with the revolution. Samual Greg was an unusually kind employer for the time...

Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, Cheshire

Advantages: Loads to keep you interested and a lot to learn.
Disadvantages: Probably too much to take in during one trip - most definately need to visit more than once.

...Quarry Bank Mill is a National Trust property which is located 2 miles south of Manchester Airport, Junctions 5 or 6 of the M56 and is well worth a visit – it is a history lesson which for once, is not boring, even for children. There is so much to learn from just on visit. Quarry Bank Mill was founded in 1784 by Samuel Greg, who at the time was a young textile merchant who chose the site for many reasons, one of which was for its location as it was near to the River Bollin and had easy access to the Bridgewater Canal, which went through Liverpool. Quarry Bank Mill was staffed by orphan children who lived in the Apprentice House, which you can see as part of the Museum. Through his mill, Samuel Greg built a local community for his workers, which became known as Styal, building local amenities for his staff, such as a church...

Q is for Quarry - Q is for Quality!

Advantages: Both Kinsey and Sue back on top form!
Disadvantages: Pity we had to wait until "Q" for this "Quality"

...For those not quite with the plot, unsurprisingly "Q is for Quarry" forms the 17th instalment of the Alphabet Series of detective murder mysteries. Like all the other books that have gone before, the main subject of the book is Californian private investigator Kinsey Millhone, a feisty, dogged and determined mid-thirties female with an unconventional and wholly likeable streak to her character. Where this book does differ from the other ones is that Sue Grafton has based the plot on a real-life unsolved crime. In a lengthy footnote to the book she explains how she was given unrestricted access to police records and official files and how that even today the actual crime remains unsolved. Ms Grafton was also instrumental in the reconstruction of the features of the unidentified "Jane Doe" and the final pages of the book contain copies...

The Evolution of a Limestone Quarry

...Thorpe Park was originally the site of a Limestone quarry, which closed in early thhe 1970's. The council had an idea to improve the local community through reclamation. Now Thorpe Park is possibly the second best theme park, with a great selection rides suited to thrill seekers older than 15. Chessington World of Adventure has become the theme park for children and those who aren't very adventurous, while Thorpe Park has developed nicely into a park that can rival the likes of Alton Towers. Travel Thorpe Park is situated near the lovely location of Slough just off junction 11 of the M25, which makes it ideal for travel by car. ...Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate is a site of significant industrial importance, and has been a national trust property since 1939 when the great, great grandson of Samuel Greg, the original owner gifted it to the trust. The Mill itself is situated within a mile or two of Manchester Airport and close to the town of Macclesfield - obviously this whole area looked very different in 1784 when the mill was first opened and it was a world away from the drab cotton mills of Manchester and surrounding slum areas. Significantly, the mill was sited on the banks of the River Bollin, and the huge Water Wheel, which finally broke in the early 1900s, was used as a source of power. Review from a new Morrissey fan!

Advantages: Catchy, beautiful music, lovely vocals, insightful lyrics.
Disadvantages: Maybe too political/controversial for some. Many, many editions.

...Up until two weeks ago, I had never even heard of Morrissey before. (I'm a female college student in the Eastern United States. Not too many Morrissey fans here!) But I was sitting in the nurse's waiting room to check up on an allergy, and I flipped through the latest issue of SPIN Magazine. They were thoroughly praising "You Are The Quarry" and the single "Irish Blood English Heart," so I decided to download the song and give it a try. And this led to another download... and another... and soon I've heard the entire album and I'm ordering the deluxe CD/DVD edition off of the Internet. Instant fan! Haha. This CD is very consistent musically. This is rock music with a slightly dark sound, smoothed out in slower tracks by sweeping background strings, and leaning toward pop in some tracks with moderately driving pop rhythms. A Styal-ish Day Out

...How well can you remember being 10 years old? Can you remember somewhere you visited when you were 10, somewhere you went to that has stuck in your mind and left a lasting impression with you? I know I can. I also know that if I were to revisit most of those places they would not be at all as I recall them. Our memories fade over time, and a lot of the things we think we remember were never actually there in reality at all. However, I have just found out that one place I have vivid recollections of visiting at that age is exactly how I remember it to be. I can only suppose that it was my great enjoyment that led me to remember it so clearly after 15 years, but whatever it was, it has stayed with me. The place in question was the apprentice house at Quarry Bank Mill; I returned there for the first time as an adult last weekend...
