Amazing Queensland
Advantages: variety of attractions, nice area, weathers good
Disadvantages: you got to fly to Australia which takes a whole day at least.
...I visited Queensland when I went to Australia earlier this year. I went to many of the well known parts of Queensland and some other less common places including, Mission Beach, Cairns, Port Douglas, Townsville, Mackay and the Bowen area. However, because there are so many places to visit in that part of Australia, I didn't manage to fit everything in.
The Queensland state is generally a very nice place, I certainly really enjoyed myself. The weather is fantastic, slightly varied depending on which part you're in. There's the very Northern part that is in the rainforest so you get a heavy shower nearly every day, however, because it's so hot you don't mind that it rains because you need to cool down and it doesn't usually last long. Then further south you got the dry tropics which are completely different, hardly rains there...

The Majestic Theatre (Pomona)
Advantages: A unique experience
Disadvantages: A long way to travel
...visited the Sydney IMAX, at over eight stories high the largest screen in the world, for my first 3-D animated film. Then there was the Imax Dome theatre in Townsville, Queensland, with its massive semi-sphere screen and reclining seats. But what I wanted to see most was The Majestic.
It's billed as the oldest running fully operational and authentic silent movie theatre in the world. The Majestic opened in 1921, showing silent movies until 1930 when the talkies began, and then reverting back to showing only silent films in 1987. Inside it has all the original dcor and seating, and screenings are accompanied by live music from owner, Ron West, or his apprentice Andrew Zieren, on the pipe organ. They run both 16mm and 35mm prints from a 1918 Simplex projector and sometimes run from more modern formats like DVD if they want to show something...

Queensland here we come - An outback experience
Advantages: This gave us the oportunity to have a holiday where we were on our own for most of the time. There were very few tourists apart from the locals and there was no need to book ahead.
Disadvantages: We found that prices were very high in all outback towns especially fuel and food. The size of the town had very little bearing on the prices charged.
...The last trip to Queensland was a rather special ocasion, I took my new British girlfriend over to get maried. We had decided to do something that most torists don't get to do and that is taks a four-wheel drive for a spin around the country.
We picked up our 4x4 from Rockhampton on the Central Queensland Coast, our first destination was to be Emerald, aprox 50 miles inland. We set up our tent at a caravan park at the local lake, it is a masive body of water with endless activities.(Fishing, skiing, swimming, and sunbathing) a hassle free day away from population.
The next day saw us in the Gemfields digging for saphires at the aptly named town of Saphire, this proved to be alot of hard work with lots of restricions, we baged some nice rocks though. We didn't camp here aas we decided it was to dry and hot. We headed for the next...

A boring town in Queensland...
Advantages: near the coast, nice weather
Disadvantages: not alot in the town
...Bowen is a town located on the eastern coast of Queensland in Australia. I visited the town while I was travelling down the easter side of Australia and used it as a base for visiting the Whitsunday's and it was near other places like Townsville, Mackay, Airlie Beach and Shute harbour. There is also The Giant Mango situated on the edge of Bowen because there is a type of mango called Bowen Mango.
Although, i personally among everyone else i know who has been to Bowen has come to the same conclusion as i did, apart from the nice beaches and a few shops, there's nothing to do in actual Bowen. However, it's in a good location to be used as a base though as it is near so many of the places you would want to visit.
On the other hand, the beaches are a big attraction, there are eight beaches in total, which are Kings Beach, Queens Beach...

Noosa Day Trip
Advantages: The tour isnt expensive
Disadvantages: Not a great day trip
...Sunshine Coast & Noosa (Australian Day Tours)
$89 per adult
$49 per child
Infants 1-2 years $15
The exchange rate is £1 to $2.17dollars
When I was living in Brisbane we decided to take a tour to Noosa to see what it was like. At the transit centre in Brisbane out tour started. We were kind of confused as the tour was combined with the Australia Zoo tour so we got stickers to identify who was who.
While driving to Australia Zoo which was our first stop we drove past the Glass House Mountains which has been formed by volcanic activity years ago. To be honest if you blinked you would have missed them as the bus never stopped only the tour guide pointed them out they could easily be missed.
First stop where we changed buses (to a considerable smaller one) was Aussie world and Ettamogah Pub. Ettamogah pub is based...

Happy hour is a movable treat in The Tropical Queenslander
Advantages: Moderately priced self-catering accomodation in Cairns
Disadvantages: Decor a bit dated and food in restaurant looked uninteresting
...The Tropical Queenslander Hotel, Cairns
LOCATION:
The Tropical Queenslander hotels in Cairns are both located Lake Street which is about 15 minutes walk to the main centre of Cairns but about 5 minutes to the nearest shops and take away restaurants and a bar. Both the hotels are classified as 3.5 * accommodation with self catering facilities. The Tropical Queenslander which is where stayed had 58 rooms so it was quite a small complex and was only two stories high. There was plenty of parking around the back and the Reception was at the front. The complex spread across a block so that the back entrance was on a different street to the front and reception area.
RECEPTION:
The reception was NOT open 24 hours so if you were arriving late I would imagine you had to make special arrangements. Reception actually closed at 8pm...

A small airport in Queensland....
Advantages: good deals to melbourne, some cheap flights
Disadvantages: no shops, not alot of flight choice, doesn't go many places
...When i was travelling around Australia this year, i was in North Queensland in a small place called Bowen which is about an hour and a half to two hours from Mackay airport, which happened to be the closest airport. I wanted a flight to Melbourne from there, and there's a new airline called Tiger Airways in Australia which was doing special offers for flights from Mackay to Melbourne in April when i was there, they may still be doing the special offer because they are trying to promote their airline because it's very new.
The airport is located in the industrial area of the city off the main road. I knew it was going to be a small airport because it only does regional flights, but it looks bigger from the outside than what it is on the inside, when your inside the airport it's really not big at all. There are only a few check...

Vintage Australia
Advantages: Attractive countryside, attractive wines
Disadvantages: Creeping urbanisation, and industrial-scale production
...Adelaide, capital of South Australia, is a pleasant place, but, as so often with cities, some of the best places to visit locally are found outside the city itself.
To the east, Mount Lofty and the Cleland Wildlife Park offer good walking and spectacular views across Adelaide to the ocean beyond. To the south, long and almost deserted beaches stretch past the mouth of the Murray River towards Kangaroo Island. And to the north-east lies Australia's most important wine-growing area, centred on the Barossa Valley.
Under the guidance of our Australian friends, my wife and I saw - and enjoyed - all three during our short stay in Adelaide. Among them, though, I would without hesitation recommend the Barossa Valley as providing the best combination of cultural and scenic interest, as well as the tastiest refreshment along the way...

Well worth the trip
Advantages: Huge
Disadvantages: A long way away
...A mate and I spent a few weeks in Queensland at the begining of 1992. It was made doubly interesting (though restrictive) by the fact that a tropical Cyclone by the name of Bonnie was battering the length of the coast at the time.
This put paid to any hopes we had of scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, which was the main reason we'd driven across the Nullabor Plains from Perth. Bit of a pain, but I guess I'll have to go back.
One of the highlights for us was Airlie Beach, a nice little town with a lot of facilities for backpackers, and also the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. We spent Xmas and New Year at a resort then known as "The Island". Situated on Long Island it was an all-inclusive adult resort that was dedicated to pretty much non-stop partying. It seemed very good at the time, sitting in the pool drinking...
