Clube do Adequate
Advantages: Nice location, friendly staff, large apartments
Disadvantages: Tired, uninspired
...When is a hotel not a hotel? When it's an apartment, of course! A normal hotel room is more than adequate for a couple, however, when travelling with another couple, you have a choice (particularly when travelling to Spain or Portugal, it seems) between renting two double or twin rooms in a hotel, or sharing a two bedroom holiday apartment. In September, my husband and I visited Portugal (near Lisbon) with another couple, and chose therefore to stay in a two bedroom apartment at the Clube do Lago in Monte Estoril (near Caiscais, about a half hour cab or train ride from Lisbon). We were there six days and five nights.
As the holiday had been booked through a travel agent, we were met at the airport by a driver, and driven the 40 minutes or so from the airport to the hotel. One of the first things you notice is the cobbled semi...

My Lovely Lagos
Advantages: A Great Atmospheric Town Bubbling with Life and Colour
Disadvantages: None
...I don't know why it has taken me so long to get round to writing about Lagos. I guess when you live in a beautiful place you tend to take your surroundings for granted. It's six years now since I left Portugal but there isn't a day when I don't miss the colour and ambience. On days like today when Warsaw is a sea of grey I really miss the colours blue, white and yellow - sky, white-washed houses and sand.
The first stop for visitors arriving in the Algarve will be Faro airport. Faro is a fine town ans has a lot to offer for a day trip but the first thing most visitors will want to do is to get in a cab or a hired car and drive to their hotel or apartment in the sun. There will be time to view Faro and its alleyways and harbour- front another day.
My first memories of living in Lagos are when I lived on a boat in the fishermen...

Lagos in the Algarve!
Advantages: sunny!! friendly, relaxed, picturesque
Disadvantages: can be a bit too hot, not much shade, constantly people trying to sell daytrips
...everywhere - it could be described as a Concrete jungle of holiday apartments. The streets, however, are kept quaint and humble. Pam trees everywhere, scenic walk with beautiful paved floors. The town centre is very sceanic due to the views of the sea and the fabulous old buildings.
There is a pretty castle looking type of building beside the beach in Lagos (do not go here as it is a waste of money although a pleasant view from the top of the building... otherwise hardly anything to see inside and annoying that you spent so much to get in!)
There was a lot of building work going on as we were staying there although we refused to let that dampen our experience (and it also means there will be a lot more built now to enjoy this summer).
There are lots of good places to eat (mostly cafes and bars/pubs in the centre of lagos, but if you go...

Lagos, Ideal Holiday for the Lazy.
Advantages: tree lined streets bars and cafe
Disadvantages: does get steep in places.
...restaurants specialising in seafood, so fresh you get to pick you meal while its still alive, there is a small Nightclub with Bouncers, but little in the way of trouble.
Cobbled streets lined with mainly Lemon and Orange tree's a beautiful sight and a full array of shops.
The locals are very friendly and will go out of their way to assist you, and the café owners will always do their best to prepare meals your kids may like, but having said this, I would say Lagos is aimed at the slightly older generation, with grown up kids, as there's not a lot around for the younger ones.
If needed there is a Hospital on the edge of town, Police station, Doctors and several Chemists.
There is a few large hotels in Lagos, but I would consider staying on the many closer resorts and hiring a car, as there is so much more to see and do on the Algarve...

Quinta Da Bellavista
Advantages: Cheap, central to both areas
Disadvantages: Not much hot water and no air conditioning
...The Quinta Da Bellavista apartments are situated right in the middle of Albufeira, with a good 15 minutes walk to either the old town or The Strip, which is regarded as the new town and where all the night life and action is.
The reception, pool area and bar are on the opposite side of the road from the apartments. We checked in (23rd June 08) and had to give a deposit of 50 euros this was to cover any damages and would be refunded at the end of the holiday. This deposit was not mentioned in the holiday brochure so beware of this when you go.
The apartment was clean and tidy, with non of the signs of squashed mosquitoes on the walls. you find a bunk bed in the hall way right opposite the toilet, i'm not sure I would have wanted to sleep there. In the toilet there is a bath, with shower, sink and foot bath. There is a mirror...

Lagos: the real capital of Nigeria!!!
Advantages: Bubbling city, pleasant places of interest
Disadvantages: Traffic Jams, over populated, police!!!
...meaningful business going on in the country has it's head office in Lagos.
Moving about town, especially for a foreigner, I would personally reccommend that either one has a trusted friend or someone to take one around or not bother. For a person that is refered to as "jjc" (i.e. johnny just come) you may be at peril if you do not know where you're going. What we would call yobs here are nothing compared to the street urchins that have eagle eyes to exploit strangers and even indigenes. the police also can be rather an unpleasant bunch to run into and you will cos they're everywhere cos there is a lot of poverty and most try to "fend" for themselves and foreigners are prime targets cos they would be expected to be carrying dollars or pounds. By the way, one british pound is about 250 naira (nai -ra). So if you have to go, make sure you have...

Lagos my Love
Advantages: It's a very charming holiday destination
Disadvantages: On the touristy side... (if this bothers you)
...I went to Lagos shortly before end of the tourist season (middle September).
GETTING THERE:
I got there by taking the coach (4.20 euros) from FARO. I definately would recommend you to take the train instead (except at siesta time), it only costs about 1 euro more. The reason I do not recommend the coach is because delays can occur quite easily (my 2 hour journey turned into a 4.5 hour nightmare with no toilet break).
STAYING IN LAGOS:
Once I arrived there, I headed to the pre-booked youth hostel. This hostel is very popular, so pre-booking is essential, no matter when you travel. It's located in the town centre, is quite modern, staff is very friendly, nice mix of travellers and a very relaxed atmosphere. Price: 10 euros per night.
There are lots of portugese people trying to earn extra euros by subletting rooms for tourists...

Graceful Portugal
Advantages: Relaxing, hot, beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: very steep streets, mad drivers
...I went on my first holiday aboard in 20yrs last year, with my sister, her husband, and their family - to Portugal, we stayed in an apartment complex a few miles out of Lagos -
We were only there for a week and had a day trip into Lagos - we caught the local bus, which was air conditioned, but was a bit rickerty, the journey took us about 40mins, through very narrow streets in places. At one point we thought the bus would not make it, but it limped and got us there. It cost us the equivalent of £2.00 each on the bus.
Once there the main highway boarding along the coast and the marina is very wide and very busy, there are many crossing along the road, which you can us to cross safely and go into the town.
We walked along the front, where you go to many little coves and swim in the sea - which is the most beautiful blue. One...

Creativity the 'do craft' way
Advantages: Great value craft magazine
Disadvantages: Available through 'do crafts' stockists
...?do crafts? Creativity is a glossy craft magazine produced by the company ?do crafts? and sold by stockists of their products. For the most part it is aimed at the card-making and scrap-booking markets which are so popular at the moment, but this month they have also included some jewellery making as well.
Inside you will find information about new products and suggestions on how they can be used for the best effect. As with most craft magazines there are many card and scrapbook designs complete with step-by-step instructions ? rubber-stamping, embossing, decoupage, quilling and beadwork - but plenty more besides.
For instance there are ?give away? pages; the current magazine has over £900?s worth including: Rubber Stamps, Papermania Embellishment Sets, Die-cut shapes and Outline Stickers, Embossing Powders and Paper...
