Children of the Quorn
Advantages: Healthier option to real mince.
Disadvantages: None
...When it comes to food reviews, I find it hard to think of what to say. How can you enthuse over taste and texture so much to fill out a five hundred word review? How can one heap praise over smell and simplicity so much that the late and great Keith Floyd would be impressed? Yet I have wanted to talk about Quorn for a while and I simply must let it out. It is like a volcano wanting to erupt and blast its lava upon the Earth. Well, here?s my Volcano folks, here?s my Etna, my Vesuvius?
First of all, I am not a vegetarian. I tried it for a while, but I have this weakness for bacon, chicken, for Big Macs (only occasional ones) and for sausages (yes, I know what goes in them, but I choose to ignore this, I buy quality ones anyway). However, I don?t really care for the fattiness of mince meat, nor its rubbery taste. My friend once suggested...

The Quorn Has Invaded My Shopping List!
Advantages: Low-fat, low salt, moist and tender, vegetarian protein option
Disadvantages: Contains milk, gluten, eggs
...from being someone who rarely ate meat to being a non-eater! I am not really a vegetarian though . . . I can eat chicken (occasionally) . . . but sometimes I can even go off chicken for months!
Consequently, I grew up with a slightly different diet than the rest of the family. I was eating more fruits and vegetables while replacing the lack of protein by eating pulses and beans. Sometimes I craved a burger, so I went for a veggie, chicken or bean burger, but as for sausages, I stayed away from them, as I could not stand the smell of even the vegetarian options!
Then Quorn came to the rescue!
I first discovered Quorn products 6 years ago (in the UK) while I was browsing the frozen food aisle at my local supermarket (Morrison's). I had a closer look and explored their range. I relatively liked their range of products. I have...

Ready, Steady, Quorn
Advantages: High fibre, low fat, suitable for vegetarians
Disadvantages: Unsuitable for vegans, slightly strange smell
...6th May update: Quorn is currently on a BOGOF offer at Safeway. £2.09 per pack + 1 free. Offer ends 25th May. Don't say I didn't tell you!
As you?ll know if you?ve read my (cat?s) ?A Day In The Life Of..? op, we?re trying to cut down on take-aways so that we can go on our ?dream holiday? next year. There are times, though, when we have very little time to prepare a meal, so I?m always on the look-out for foods that are suitable for ?quick and easy? recipes. That?s why Quorn was a great discovery for me, especially Quorn Mince. You can prepare a delicious Bolognese sauce in the amount of time it takes to boil a pan of water and cook some pasta - eat your heart out, Ainsley Harriott!
Quorn, a vegetarian substitute for minced meat, ?is made with mycoprotein, a nutritious member of the fungi family?. According to the packaging, it is...

Quorned Beef
Advantages: Good texture, easy to cook with
Disadvantages: It's not a bacon sarnie!!
...I'm not a vegetarian, in fact, I may be the biggest fan of bacon butties known to man! A drizzle of HP sauce and I'm in heaven! Despite this though, recently I've become a bit of a fan of Quorn. This may be due to the fact that I'm a lazy cook and can't be bothered defrosting meat. Quorn is perfect for me, just get it out the freezer, chuck it in a pan and away you go - what could be easier?!
If you've read any of the Quorn ops (or if you're generally in the know!!), you may have gathered that Quorn originates from mushrooms and is meant to emulate the texture of meat in various forms. Quorn, produced by Marlow Foods in North Yorkshire, is available in burgers ( I recommend the Southern Style ones), sausages, fillets, slices for sandwiches and in various ready meals such as lasagne, cottage pie, Quorn tikka etc. Perhaps the most...

Chilli Quorn Carne and Other Adventures With Quorn
Advantages: Easy. Versatile. Cheap when on offer. Widely available.
Disadvantages: None for me but I'm a veggie...
...Being a primarily vegetarian household I never offer a meat alternative when we have guests for dinner. I?ve even catered for the ?I don?t eat vegetables so wont be able to eat a vegetarian meal? guest. I?ve nothing against meat eaters, vegetarianism is my personal choice but after 15+ years of a meat free diet handling fresh or processed meat products churns my stomach ? I?ll spare you the detail! Quorn products are widely available and offer a great alternative to a vegetable based diet and can also be a great substitute to meat in general.
My sister first introduced me to Quorn many moons ago, without staking my life on it I guess that was over 10 years ago. I initially purchased some Quorn ready made meals for convenience and was never disappointed with the result however the price left a lot to be desired. Around 18 months...

Quorn Mince - Sizzlin' Good
Advantages: Nice if you dont like meat
Disadvantages: Can be expensive
...I do not buy a lot of pre prepared or processed food, but Quorn is one of them. If you have not tried it before you would think that all Quorn is the same, tastes the same but it does not. The Quorn which imitates red meat is different from that which is meant to be a substitute for chicken. Personally I prefer the white Quorn it really does have the texture and taste of chicken, but I prefer not to think of it as a meat substitute more as a food in its own right. For example you get Tofu from soya beans which you can cut into blocks and fry, and it?s the same with Quorn. It is made from a mushroom protein rather than soya beans and is processed into a variety of products, including burgers, pieces, fillets, nuggets, slices, pate, sausages, a wide selection of ready meals and of course mince.
I think that the Quorn mince is...

quorn on the hob
Advantages: Low fat and carbs, high protein
Disadvantages: pricey
...Quorn. It's my new best friend. And I know that's wrong. It's perverse. I am a protein deviant.
I'm not actually veggie, but I am very very fussy about meat. It's all my mum's fault I was clearly spoilt rotten at home, and now I find that the bits of animals I like to eat I can't really afford on a regular basis. My new discovery Quorn may not be cheap, but it's cheaper than good meat, probably better for me, and really really easy to use. And it tastes good. No, really, it does!
I expect most people know vaguely what Quorn is: basically it's fungus mycoprotein. Not the bad sort of fungus that makes things like bread and toes mouldy, but a high protein variety that some bods found in a field and began cultivating. Probably in huge grimy vats. Anyhow, you don't really need to know the ins and outs of it. Recent queries over...

Quorn.Cumberland Sausages
Advantages: Good for you,low in fat,not too expensive,FREE on Slimming World.Meat free
Disadvantages: Some people may prefer real meat
...I first started eating Quorn properly about 6 months ago.
I'd always been aware of Quorn and its rival makes like Bean Feast.
I can honestly say I will never eat Bean Feast again, after having to make a Lasagne with it every week for 8 weeks as part of my G.C.S.E food course!
I knew that Quorn was a meat alternative, suitable for vegetarians, but only recently found out that its main ingredient is 'MYCOPROTEIN',which is a member of the Funghi family.
I never really thought much about eating Quorn up until recently.
Although I'm not a great meat eater,I used to always walk past the Quorn section of the supermarket without a second glance.
However at work, the cook has been on Slimming World for about 4 months and has lost over two stone.
She recommended the diet to me,as i'm always dieting, but can never stick to it as my will...

Quorn Sausages
Advantages: big, chunky, low calorie but full of taste, veggie
Disadvantages: not enough in pack, price is a bit heavy
...Healthy eating can get dull dull dull.
On my rounds on Tesco, it suddenly occurred to me to go veggie. After all they do say that veggie products are more healthy.
So on my perusal, the first thing to hit me was a pack of 6 Quorn sausages. As they were on offer, I got two packs and headed home. Priced at £1.25 some may say this is steep compared to what you would pay for 3 times as many value sausages, but the benefits make you see why afterwards.
Quorn is a microprotein. Think mushroom and you are on your way to understanding what it is. To make it more pallatable, they make them into products we know and love, like sausages.
The unbelievable thing though is that these sausages contain 57 CALORIES EACH!!!!!!!!!!
Thats right, you read it right, 57 calories! so with a few spuds and some gravy, you can have a fair few...

QUORN PIECES
Advantages: realistic looking,lowcal
Disadvantages: expensive, weird taste
...This was the first time that I had seen these and thought I would try them.
You get a 300g bag for around £1.92 and for 100g you are looking at around 94 calories, so from a dieters point of view they are excellent, especially being low fat and high protein.
The bag is the usual orangey yellow quorn with the item on the front and to be fair, it does resemble what it looks like on the package and you do get a lot of pieces in the bags to make them worthwhile getting, although I wouldnt say they would stretch for more than 2 people per bag.
Smellwise, they dont smell of anything until cooked, and then you get a clear chickeny mushroomy sort of smell. You can cook them in a variety of ways, but I boiled them in chopped tomatoes as that seemed to make them the nicest.
On cooking, they stay moist, but you have to be very careful...
