QXL is one of the best known British auction websites and in my opinion one of the best. Whether you're after a cheap mobile phone deal, a last-minute holiday, garden furniture or a computer at a rock-bottom price QXL has it. Buy and Sell on QXL (I rhyme!)

Advantages: Lower fees than eBay, Sell stuff from home
Disadvantages: Fees, Fewer items, Fewer Buyers

QXL, good choice

Advantages: Easy to use
Disadvantages: pages can be a little slow at times

...I have tried various other auction sites but always find myself coming back to QXL as I find it easy to use and clear, you simply register and get a username and password then you can begin to bid and sell.Everything is easy to find as it is all in catagories or if you cant see it then a search will locate it. You can set the reserve price to whatever you want and you will know if you get someone interested as they email you. You can also set the length of time for your auction. The best thing to remember is to start off as low as possible as you are more likely to attract bidders, after all nobody wants to pay over the odds!!! You can also set up a maximum bid for any item you are bidding for, this ensures you go up to what you can afford and dont miss out....

QXL - the auction site

Advantages: get rid of all those things cloggig up the spare room
Disadvantages: same risks as buying anything from the internet

...www.qxl.com QXL is a UK based auction site - although there is the equivalent site for various European countries. The basic idea is you place items you don’t want anymore on the site for other people to bid on, and you bid on items that you want - nice and easy. Actually it is nice and easy. You have to register to be able to bid, but this only takes a couple of minutes. If you want to sell, then you have to give your credit card details so that payment can be taken (after all they aren’t going to do it for nothing!!). Bidding couldn’t be easier. Everything is categorised and once you’ve seen something you’re interested in you look at the auction page. The auction page will give you more details about the product, possibly a picture, the nickname of who is selling it and a bidding history...

QXL Online Auction Tips and Tricks

Advantages: Some amazing bargains, mainly safe, secure, well laid out
Disadvantages: I suspect that some of what's sold is stolen (I have no proof to back this up though), there's a huge scope for things to go wrong!

...QXL is the best auction site in the UK by far in my opinion. It's well laid out, it's insured (if the item you order doesn't turn up) is also very good. I must say I prefered the site before they re-designed it about 6 months ago (when everything was bright orange)- but I don't suppose it makes a big difference! I picked up an Ondigital (tomorrow to be ITV Digital) box 12 months ago for £35, that's £85 below the shop price at the time. However QXL's popularity has led to more bidders, leading to higher prices. Therefore, as I spend a lot of time on QXL and other auction sites I've devised some hints and tips; 1)Don't bid in the evenings, for auctions that end around midday the next day (the usual time for QXL Direct auctions)- the price shoots up at night! The best time to grab a bargain is to look just before the auctions finish...

QXL is disgraceful

...I have been 'lured' by emails of 'bargains' from Qxl and have bought 5 items over the past 3 years. I can say nothing other than this is the most disgraceful service I have ever come across on the web. They deserve to go broke and I hope they do. On 11 November 1999 I was successful at buying a digital camera which I bought for £99 at auction from QXL themselves (they were the vendors) . I thought it would make a nice Xmas present for my niece. As Dec 99 arrived I began what turned out be a 'series' of emails to QXL right up to and including Christmas eve. All I would ever receive was autoresponder messages followed by 'generic' ''we apologise for the delay'' messages. To cut a long story short the camera never came and their excuse was 'many apologies, problems with supply so we can no longer provide you with your purchase...

Dont bin it QXL it

Advantages: reach a lot more people than the traditional newspaper
Disadvantages: people win auctions then dont actaully buy the item

...I have been a lurker/bargain hunter on the QXL site for some time. I have never actually bought anything from it yet. Spotted some bargains but always been out bit unfortunately. However last week when I realised I was strapped for cash this month I decided to try out being a seller on QXL. So I looked through my things and found a portable CD player and a Sega Saturn. So I set up my account and arranged an auction. I took the default time, which is 4 days. Looking back in hindsight that wasn’t that good an idea as that meant the auction ended on a Sunday. I need to look and see when their peak time is and end my auctions then. Anyway there was one bid a piece on each item when I left work on Thursday, and I was away so I was not going to be able to check out the status. Anyway on Sunday I received two SMS messages...

Two sides to the QXL story -UPDATED

...Hello All. After reading many of the reviews members have written about QXL I felt compelled to write my own review. As many people have said, the site is really easy to use. Every thing is well set out and there are great bargins to be had. Another plus side of it is that there arn't many people on there so you are more likely to get what you want at a price you want to pay. Not so good for sellers though, many items I listed struggled to sell. I have had experience of both buying and selling on QXL and a few weeks ago I would be singing there praises, now I feel the opposite. My experience in the last two weeks has caused me nothing but worry concern and sleep less nights. Firstly I will start by saying under normal circumstances QXL is an extremely safe place to trade, and I agree in most respects...

Buy and sell at QXL?

Advantages: Good range, nice QXL bargains

...In my opinion QXL is the best of the UK auction sites. It is laid out clearly and professionally and has a wide range of categories. When compared with eBay.co.uk it's e-mails are always sent out on time. As soon as you are outbid you are informed by e-mail and at the end of an auction the seller and the winning bidder are both e-mailed with the results. EBay however, once made me wait over two days from the end of an auction before it e-mailed me to let me lknow the result. QXL's design is very good, whereas eBay looks like it has been produced at homeby someone who is self-taught in HTML, QXL is well-designed and clearlythought out....

QXL - not that hot.

Advantages: Vast range
Disadvantages: Over used / subscribed hence not many bargains

...Obviously most people have heard of QXL, probably due to its size. I have used the site several times to buy items. Now though, I find that most items end up costing almost their retail value due to the amount of users. I have had some problems with the site, finding out that a seller I had won an auction from was unreliable and so on. I personally think that if you take away all the advertising that better sites exist. I tend to use Aucland as I have had no problems and have bought some bargains....
