Reviews of r&b love classics
he certainly unleashed something
Review of Unleash The Dragon [ECD] - Sisqo by
Blondeboms
Advantages: Great lyrics, upbeat
Disadvantages: none at all
...Sisqo's album is amazing. The tracks are catchy and unforgetable. It has the classic "Thong Song" and also "Incomplete". It's R&B at it's best, i'd recommend it to anyone into R&B. There are no offensive lyrics. Some of the lyrics are sexual, that's just Sisqo's way. All tracks get you up and dancing and the CD is digitally enhanced so you can watch the music videos on your PC. It has two videos of "Thong Song" , one of which is uncensored and one video of "Got To Get It". It has extra remixes by legendary Artful Dodger and Stargate. I love this album, Unleash The Dragon is definately one to buy....

Good alternative
Review of MTV2 by
sid
Advantages: good choice of music
Disadvantages: none
...This is an alternative music channel that has those rare classic songs that you can’t get your hands on in the shop, for instance Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart. This is a channel different from the others on Sky, it has all the classic hits but still unlike VH classic. These songs are engraved in the back of all our heads.
A channel that can be watched for ages, it has no age boundaries and it features artists like Jeff Buckly, Bob Marley and modern day classics by Oasis and Supergrass. This is an escape if you want it from the present music by pop groups. It’s a channel that lets you listen to bands that defied their time and catch up with all that great music you missed.
Of course it has present groups but if you don’t like R&B then this is channel for you. A very good alternative channel.

Essential R&B? Is it?
Review of Essential R&B - The Very Best Of R&B Summer 2004 - Various Artists by
ice_pink
Advantages: Light, easy listening, well known tunes
Disadvantages: Some dodgy songs on there
...Essential R&B.... let's see shall we...
The first song on this album is Eamon's F*** it. Pretty good way to start the album, admittedly its an old tune now but it probably was the most popular and most played (well one of the) of 2004. Who didn't hear that song?
It includes a lot of the most popular chart songs of 2004 and before, such as 50 Cent's In Da Club, R Kelly's Ignition Remix, another classic, and Usher's You got it Bad.
The songs on the album are varied - there's a couple of hip hop type songs, a few slower songs that are more love songs than anything, and of course, a lot of R&B.
The second disk starts with Outkast's Hey Ya, which gets the disk off to a good start! No Scrubs and Hot in Herre are also present, as well as, strangely, Natasha Bedingfield's Single? I found that pretty strange.
I believe this CD...

The boys finally become real men.
Review of Boyz II Men II - Boyz II Men by
bigdave2121
Advantages: The four voices on this album combine to make a beautiful sound.
Disadvantages: Most of the better tracks are on the bands greatest hits CD.
...'. The last track on the album is an accapella version of the beatles classic yesterday and i'm sure the beatles (dead and alive) would be proud of Boys II Men for their rendition. The guys make you think their accompanied by a band by using variation in their voices and working well as a quartet. Another example of their barbershop roots but this time being used to make a classic into a great R&B tune.
If you like this album you'll love the boys II Men greatest hits CD (legacy), which has now been released. Most of the better songs on this album are on the greatest hits but there are still some good tracks that are not....

The best soul album ever?
Review of 30 Greatest Hits - Aretha Franklin by
rsmith
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...I believe that Aretha is THE best female singer - whether we're talking soul, pop, whatever. No one else comes close, and as this is a selection from her golden years, 1967 - 74, you really can't go wrong.
There are so many soul classics on here - satisfaction is guaranteed.
It starts with "I never loved a man the way I loved you", a perfect R&B track. It could even be her best song, but there are so many other great ones to chose from, it's impossible to pick a 'best' song. If you like R&B, other songs like "Chain of fools" and "Rock steady" won't disappoint.
If you like gospel, this is evident in "Think", "Don't play that song", and the version of "Bridge over troubled water" (restored to its gospel roots after Simon and Garfunkel's rather over the top treatment).
She can even cover pop standards such as "Eleanor Rigby...

good but not classic
Review of Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic - Prince by
eatingrich
Advantages: varied style
Disadvantages: at times seems like an attempt to sound commercial and 'modern'
...this was prince's first major label release (with Arista) after leaving Warner Brothers in the most famous label/artist dispute ever.
I wasnt sure what to expect when i first got the album as its reputation is that it is very commercial and it is regarded as his worst album.
personally i was pleasantly surprised by the album and thought that while it had some weaker songs there were also songs on there that i rate alongside some of prince's best songs.
it is hard to review the lyrics and shelf life etc because of the variation of the songs. Songs like Hot Wit U and Undisupted are commercia R&B and hip-hop. Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, So Far So Pleased and Baby Knows are more rock/pop orientated and I Love U But I Dont trust U anymore and wherever u go whatever u do are tender ballads.
generally the more commercial songs are about sex...

Has to be the album of the year for 1998 to 1999
Review of My Love Is Your Love - Houston, Whitney by
craigy_baby_2000
Advantages: Very easy-listening, good tracks in general
Disadvantages: Some mediocre tracks, some beats a bit too strong
...in the UK.
3. My Love is Your Love: An up-beat ballad, this love song makes a whole new genre of love songs which others can only follow. Strings and drums are combined with vocals for a great result. Also released as a single in 1999.
4. When You Believe: This duet with Mariah Carey was released nearly 2 years ago for the release of the 'Prince of Egypt' film. A very pleasant ballad.
5. If I Told You That: Released late this year, this song is another very beat-orientated song which and has a very strange piano accompaniment which is almost jazz-style but works really well.
6. In My Business: More TLC style, this up-beat R&B track features Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott who makes this song very cool and hip. The constant scratching of records in the background does get annoying though.
7. I Learned From The Best: Another Top 10 UK release...

Rod Stewart Semi-Plugged, The Sublime To The Banal
Review of Unplugged...and Seated - Rod Stewart by
bigush
Advantages: Ron Wood
Disadvantages: Hot Legs
...with the original single and I hope you're better soon!
Track 2: Tonight's The Night
Ditto!
Track 3: Handbags and Gladrags
Excellent rendition of the old classic used as the theme song for 'The Office" Lends itself well to the unplugged format.
Track 4: Cut Across Shorty
Good North London pub R&B from the old days.
Track 5: Every Picture Tells A Story
Similar style R&B track the chord changes in which have always sent shivers. Title track of one of the best Faces' albums.
Track 6: Maggie May
Do I really need to say anything. I personally prefer the original but this is a good version.
Track 7: Reason To Believe
Classic Faces romantic sing-along anthem. Done well here.
Track 8: People Get Ready
Stab at a gospel standard. It's ok…..but lets be honest, white people can't sing gospel.
Track 9: Have I Told You Lately That I Love You
Back...

Not realy my kind of thing
Review of Not That Kind - Anastacia (R&B) by
TopCat_MO
Advantages: Fantastic Voice
Disadvantages: Too many bland tunes
...Well i've got to give to Anastacia she has got one hell of a voice, the first time I heard it on the radio i thought i just had to get her album.
After finding out a couple more of her songs (outta love being one), I decided to buy the Album. After waiting around a week for it to arrive in the post, my expectations were high. But after playing it through a couple of times i wasn't that impressed.
Don't get me wrong the voice is outstanding as is the woman, but apart from outta love and the title track, not tht kind, the reast of the songs were bland and lacked any originality other than the classic diva type tunes. It seems like the people behind this album thought that the woman and the voice could pull it though, it nearly worked but not for me.
I hope that Anastacia produces some new original material and mixes her great voice...

Something to confuse you
Review of R&B Lovesongs (The Very Best Of R&B Love Songs 2006) - Various Artists by
ice_pink
Advantages: Good mix, variety of different songs, new and old
Disadvantages: Are they really all love songs?
...'s '1 Thing'. Now this suprised me, as it is one of the songs that constantly was on in nightclubs last year!! So I was amazed that it had found it's way on to what i thought was about to be a slow and meaingful collection of chilled out love songs!
Now, for the actual love songs, you've of course got to have Marvin Gaye's Let's Get it On, I'm so glad that the CD ends on this song so it leaves it on a good note. For other classics you've got a bit of Luther Vandross and also Boyz II Men, Toni Braxton and The Fugees. These are the sort of songs that I thought would fill the whole album, to be honest with you, although some of the newer songs (such as ushers Burn) were refreshing, songs such as the Black Eyes Peas (Don't Phunk with My Heart) really just ruined the feel of the CD.
I must admit I hadn't heard of some of the songs...
