Dual radio/alarm. Just what you need!

...Just before Christmas my trusty but rather elderly portable radio gave up the ghost. I needed another one. But this was just before Christmas and my mind was on other things. Like Christmas shopping! Whilst wandering round ASDA in Telford for a number of Christmas presents my wife drew my attention to a small but very attractive silver-coloured radio. It boasted digital tuning (it is not a DAB radio, however) and three wave bands. One AM and 2 FM. It also has a built-in alarm clock function and a dial light of a rather nice amber/orange colour. I was amazed at the price. £6.95? Surely it can't be any good for that price? It was actually remarkably good! The piece of mind alarm

Advantages: Easy to use.
Disadvantages: Watch out for the box settings

...limit so that when you enter the house the alarm just beeps quitely to remind you to turn it off ( ours beeps for 30 seconds though can go up to a minute setting). The alarm is extremely loud which obviously is a good thing but it frightens the snot out of my 2 year old son!!!! The only problem we have had is in the box that goes outside (holding the solar panel) there are two settings inside it, if swithched to the on position picks up every radio wave out there and does have a tendency to set off automatically (ours went every night for a week during the night!!!), but when we turned the button off we have (touch wood) had no problems since. Silent Alarm

Advantages: The true revival of Joy Division-esque music

...Bloc Party's debut album, 'Silent Alarm' arrived in mid Feb 2005 to critical acclaim as the possible answer for the next Joy Division, and it's clear to see why. The first thing you can note is the 'indie' feel, and the drum beats that are reminiscent of Joy Division at their brief yet best time. The guitars seemed to have picked up their own unique sound as well, and Kele Okereke's vocals are strong, and something Damon Albarn-like about them. The opening track 'Like Eating Glass' is an excellent starting point, and could quite easily be a single at some point. The musical elements here are an excellent indication of what is to follow throughout the album. Alarming thought

Disadvantages: goes off for no apparent reason

...It's an alarming thought that someone dies every day due to the fact they never had a smoke alarm fitted. Another reason for this is the removal of the devices' battery, or indeed a flat battery. It is to this end that our local council comes round a check on a regular basis. If you do have a smoke alarm fitted and it tends to beep now and then, this could be an indication the battery needs replaced. Most fires start at night and if you do not have an alarm fitted your chances of survival are virtually Zero. Fire is not the main killer in accidents like this. If you have no alarm and are asleep, it's the smoke that's going to get you first. Not a nice way to go, but you can give yourself a fighting chance if you BUY A SMOKE ALARM. We have two smoke alarms in our house, and there are many occasions when I felt like breaking them...

Wharfdale DAB/FM Digial Radio Alarm Clock

Disadvantages: time freezes and then doesn't work, horrible alarm noise, not easy to use.

...Was given this last Christmas as a present. It isn't the easiest of clock radios to understand, the instructions aren't too bad, but trying to remember what to do each time you use it isn't easy, I find that I have to have the instructions to hand on each occasion. It has quite often had me wanting to throw it out of the window. The worst point about it is that for some unknown reason the time 'sticks' and the clock becomes un-useable, you have to unplug it to re-start it, I have taken it back for an exchange a couple of times, but to be honest I can't wait for next Christmas to a I can have another new one. BUYER BEWARE, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS CLOCK IF YOU WANT IT TO GET YOU UP IN A MORNING, THE TIME WILL HABVE PROBABLY FROZEN ON IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT....

In actual fact this is a stand alone novel and does not use characters from Spindler?s other novels although, like her other novels, it is set in the New Orleans area. Disappointingly the setting is neither here nor there as it has no particular relevance to the story, nor does it successfully capture the essence of that fine southern city in spite of occasional reference to the grand houses associated with New Orleans area. After a couple of chapters I realised that ?Cause for Alarm? didn?t feature the characters I?d met in the other Spindler novel I?d read and so I turned to the back cover blurb. Curiously...

Smoke alarm and pendant light in one - fantastic

Advantages: Barely noticeable looks, no batteries to change, illuminates lights to help escape
Disadvantages: May suddenly turn the bedroom light on at 2am if there's a power cut

...This is an excellent solution to having unsightly smoke alarms on the ceiling. The Housesafe smoke alarm replaces the normal pendant light rose on the ceiling and the smoke alarm and sensors are concealed in the base. It is wired into the mains like a normal pendant light would be and once smoke has been detected, the siren activates and automatically illuminates the pendant light to provide an illuminated escape route. In the event of a mains power failure, the alarm is still operational via a rechargeable battery contained within it and it contains a power monitoring supply system to ensure 100% effectiveness. The area of power failures is, I think, it's only downfall. If say, you have one of these in your bedroom and there's a power failure at 3am, the alarm will switch to battery power and automatically turn the bedroom...

It is very clear and crackle free. The alarm is very loud, so it is sure to wake me up. I have never not been woken by it in the times that I have used it. The radio however, can't be put on a particularly high volume so you have to be fairly close to hear it. There isn't a great range in the volumes you can have. Each time you up the volume there isn't a huge change in the output volume. *Design/Look* This Philips radio/alarm clock, is styled in what I would call the 'classic' form of bedside alarm clocks.
