FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Still Randy!
Advantages: You might enjoy it
Disadvantages: Ok then buy that Steve Brookstein single!
...This is quite an old record but I make no apologies for reviewing it as it was the first Randy Newman LP (perhaps I should have said Album?) I bought (on vinyl) and is one I keep replaying in my head as I no longer own a record player (or should that be phonograph!)
The recording was done at the Bitter End club in New York in 1970 in front of 'live' audience although Randy doesn't interact much with them much so I may be wrong..
1.Mama told me not to come
A cover version No 1 hit in 1970 for Three Dog Night (who I thought were defunct but apparently they have just released a greatest hits album in Oct 2004!).
But I digress.
The song is quite bouncy and concerns a young boy going finding himself out of his depth at a wild party and wishing he had listened to his Mom's advice.
2.Tickle Me
Advice on what to do when the TV...

Advantage Quaid!
Advantages: Bold idea
Disadvantages: Silly ending
....
Another plus is the mega cast, Sigourney Weaver onboard in a cameo role. Dennis Quaid is always great in the lead as the ansgty all-American guy and with William Hurt playing his third US president in his career and eye-candy Mathew Fox from Lost jemmied in for the ladies to draw that TV drama comparison it's not too lightweight as far as a movie goes. One casting weakness would be Forest Whitaker, hopelessly out of place as the naive American tourist in Europe, his bizarre array of frantic grimaces and stares almost comical.
-The Cast-
Dennis Quaid ... Thomas Barnes
Matthew Fox ... Kent Taylor
Forest Whitaker ... Howard Lewis
Bruce McGill ... Phil McCullough
Édgar Ramirez ... Javier
Saïd Taghmaoui ... Suarez
Ayelet Zurer ... Veronica
Zoë Saldana ... Angie Jones
Sigourney Weaver ... Rex Brooks

Elegy to Randy
Advantages: A useful form of expression, a way of releasing emotions
Disadvantages: some can be very dreary
...When my grandson, Randy, died of bone and lung cancer in November of 2000, I had a lot of mixed feelings. Some of it was guilt, as I had learned a lesson from my grandmother's survival after a stroke, so this time I had prayed for Randy's passing; some was anger that he had died so young - he was only 19 and had had such a hard life, being ADD/ADHD and thus having had a very unhappy childhood and horrific school years.
Then one sleepless night, as the dawn began to break while I worked at my computer, the words to this poem came to me, and it was like a peace, a balm to all those feelings. I felt they were a worthy memorial to the memory of this brave young man.
So, here's the poem, and if anyone you know suffers the loss of a child, feel free to copy it and substitute she and girl-child if it's for a female. I have given it...

Dennis Quaid Meets Saw?
Advantages: good acting, a new take on gore
Disadvantages: a little bit 'too hostel' for me if you know what I mean...
...Horsemen is 2009's answer to what you get when you combine a little hostel, a little saw and a little biblical reference - which you can probably guess from the title 'Horsemen' - the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
This was a film I was actually looking forward to seeing and I wasn't disapointed but I don't rate it as one of my favourites however I do reccomend it to those of you that are a fan of cult films, crime thrillers and gorefests.
The Plot
The tagline - Four Victims. Four painful secrets - adds a little depth to the film title and the plot centres around Aiden Breslin (Quaid) some kind of forensic detective that specialises in, well, teeth by the looks of it. Anyway, like most violent focused films the plot is very obvious although it is quite linear and straightforward. No complicated twists here, so great...

Quaid, start the reactor...
Advantages: Intelligent action film, unique style, very enjoyable, classic
Disadvantages: Violence might not be in everyone's taste
...Adapted from a story by Philip K. Dick, whose works are sci-fi gold, Total Recall spent around 16 years in production limbo during which time David Cronenberg was attached to direct and even penned an early draft, but it wasn't until the script landed in the hands of Schwarzenegger that the movie came to fruition. Having originally been cast for the main role in Robocop (wardrobe problems causing him to leave), he was very impressed with the final film and desired to work with Paul Verhoeven. He convinced a production company to purchase the script and even suggested how the script could accomodate him better. A lot of credit must go to the big man.
In a futuristic setting, Douglas Quaid dreams of going to Mars but a nagging wife (Sharon Stone at her sexiest) insists otherwise so he does what any frustrated husband would do and has...

Ron's Randy Rooster
Advantages: Well it will get more eggs
Disadvantages: Might kill the poor bugger
...There was a farmer way out west, Birkenhead I think it was, who was tired of his hens not laying enough eggs and told his wife.
"That's it Rose, I'm off down t'market(well he was from Rochdale) to get me a Rooster to liven up those hens."
"Well if you have to Ron,just don't be back late I've made your favourite for tea, Rice Pudding!"says his wife."Right toe," he murmurs.
So off goes the Farmer to the market to buy a new Rooster to liven up his useless hens.
Down at the market he meets Farmer Ray who's showing off his prize Rooster."Here Ray, how much you want for that there Rooster."says Ron.
"He's not fer sale." comes the snappy reply.
"Why you brought him down the market showing him off for then?"
"None o'your business, if I wants to bring Randy down t' market I shall."
"Oh it's gotta name has it, why you call him Randy...

A Spellbinding Combination
Advantages: Crawfords sublime vocals backed by Sample's piano and arrangements.
Disadvantages: None
...In the 1960s Joe Sample was a founder member of the influential jazz funk combo The Crusaders. Having learnt to play the piano at the age of five, his musical roots were to develop under the influence of many different traditions, including gospel, soul, blues, Latin, and classical music. Randy Crawford drew from a similar musical heritage but mainly comes from a gospel background. She gained notoriety with a number of solo hits (Rainy Night In Georgia, You Might Need Somebody, One Day I'll Fly Away) in the early 1980s but was unable to sustain chart success and for many has subsequent years had a fairly low profile. 'Feeling Good' produced in 2006 can be seen as a reunion of these two artists. It is an album on which they have reignited the special chemistry that was first set alight in 1976 when Sample played on Crawford's debut album...
