...However you view huge 4x4 or 'off-road' cars, personally I am withholding judgement at this stage; there is no denying that the Land Rover badge and indeed range offers the very pinnacle in off road technology. Of them all, undoubtedly the Range Rover has always been 'king of the hill' in more ways than one! Until very recently I had never driven an off-reader, and then like the proverbial number 9 bus several of them all come along at once. This was actually very useful, as to drive them all back to back, on the same day over exactly the same roads you are able to make direct comparisons, impossible to do under any other circumstances. 2009 Range Rover Sport..a british beauty !

Advantages: 3 years running this car has had the No 1 residual value of any SUV...
Disadvantages: comes across as over-boxy styling

...The car being reviewed here is the 200 Land Rover Sport 4.4L V8 6-speed auto. This vehicle comes from the original range rover. It's a much sleeker and paired down version of the classic Range Rover when it was first produced in 1970. Now the story of the Range Rover and me are synonymous I learned off-road driving in this vehicle. It was the very first vehicle I got to drive through the Farm in the mud with, so I already have a great love for the Range Rover. First of all let's take a look at what powers-this-beast. The powerplant is a 4.4L with 300hp on this model. There is also an optional supercharger with 390 hp..so quite powerful nuff said. On the supercharged version there are some wonderful and very new innovative features derived from race car driving...for example when your downshifting manually for the engine to match...

Range Rover Vogue TDV8 review

Advantages: Great offroad, luxurious, spacious
Disadvantages: Too big for some, would prefere more rear leg room

...The car I will be reviewing is an 08 plate Range Rover Vogue SE that cost in excess of £80,000 back in May, and is now (due to the credit crunch) worth significantly less. Let's start with the stylish. This form of RR has been around since 2002, but despite that it still looks relatively modern. I think it's time for Land Rover to update it soon, though, as I'm a bit bored with the look. It's got a lot of road presence (mainly because it's so big). The interior is a great place to be. You have to climb into it (as it's so high off the ground), and once you're in your cosseted by large leather seats, and a great looking dash. There's wood and leather all around, and a lovely touch screen sat nav. The rear has a decent amount of legroom, and would be comfortable for a 6 footer to spend a long time. LR don't do a LWB version...

Baby Range Rover

Advantages: quite economcial, very comfortable, loaded with equipment

...This is the first 4x4 I have owned. The other cars on my drive are Japanese import sports cars which are low and very very fast. This is to some extent the complete opposite but is a wonderful experience. Our car was delivered in shining black with a black leather interior with .4 of a mile on the clock. Looks The car looks bigger than it actually is. It has a strong resemblance to its Range Rover big brother. It is lengthwise about the same size as the car it replaces for us, a Peugeot 407. But its height and rugged looks make it look a far bigger proposition though. The car has some tasteful silver coloured vents and trim which break up the all black look along with some tasty 19" alloys. Interior The interior is superb. Comfortable seats adjust to fit all sizes and have enough support to stop you getting back ache...

VW's Range Rover?

Advantages: Very fast, flexible and refined
Disadvantages: Compromised ride and handling. Grey interior

...extravagant a means of transport bearing in mind its seriously flawed dynamics. A little later in the day we had the opportunity to drive a Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue. At £62,000 it is a little more expensive, but hey at this level what's an extra couple of grand? No, the point is it was so vastly superior in the handling and ride departments, that it was in a different league altogether. No I could not recommend the Volkswagen Touareg, at least not in the V10 diesel version I drove. Not being experienced with off-roaders, this one would lead me to shun the breed as a high mileage driver. With a Porsche badge on it, it is obviously the ultimate school run car though....

Rover 420 SDI 1998

Advantages: Practical, safe, reliable, rapid and comfortable.
Disadvantages: Group 11 insurance, not as rust proof as older Rover 200's, soggy suspension.

...I own a 1998 R Rover 420SDI with 104,000 miles. I paid £485 for it in 2007 with tax, mot and full history. It needed a bit of TLC due to it's last owner. (A few dents, etc) It is a very comfortable car and highly economical returning 70mpg / 600miles per tank on a run. It has ABS, electric windows x 4, cd x 6 and air con. I find it highly reliable, I am 6ft 1 and I have ample room as does my mate who is taller. Driver's airbag is standard in 1998, so is side-impact beams. It has a very strong chassis with a good size boot. Sadly the exterior metal is not as durable as the older Rover 200. Mine has a ITG air filter on it so it is probably kicking more out than the standard 105 bhp/ 210 Nm Torque. It is rapid, and it growls. It will cruise easily at 80mph and is not too loud like earlier diesels. Overall a very good car, I have only...

My first car, and my first Rover!

I was 19 years old when I started to learn to drive and look for that all important first car. I considered all makes and models ranging from vauxhall, ford and peugeot but I never came across anything that really tickled my fancy. My friend at the time owned a Rover 414i which I knew was cheap on insurance, cheap to run and tax and after having been in his I knew it packed a punch and sounded brilliant! This is the second Rover I have owned the first being a old shape 1995 214 which was my Dad's but drove after passing my driving test at 17. Two and a half years later at the age of 19 and being very impressed with the 214 I decided to buy a Rover 75. I had a budget of under four grand so I decided to bite the bullet and buy a 75 from the auction. I knew pretty much what to look out for and finally bought a X reg 2001 1.8 classic with NO aircon in wedgwood blue. I really wanted a 2.0v6 connoisseur se but being 19 had to think about insurance!. Although a bog standard 75 it was in the lovely wedgwood blue which is one of the best colours in my opionion had just been serviced with a new cambelt was in superb condition with 102k...

Rover 214 SLI

Advantages: Cheap to buy and run, nice to drive, comfortable, don't rust

...has adjustable steering wheel and lumbar suport, which is brilliant as you can pump the seat up or down!. The car is also well equiped with electric windows, power steering, electric door mirrows, electric sunroof, remote central door locking with a rover alarm & imobilizer, and a Airbag not bad for a 95 model. If you by a 200 go for the mid range sli with costs only a couple of hundred more but as lots more equipment compared to the si. The engine is also a gem, it's 1.4 multi point fuel injected 16 valve twin quam engine is so good, it produces a healthy 103bhp something it's rivals can only dream off, as you can imagine it's quite quick off the mark leaving much bigger cars amazed. The engine also gives off a satisfying growl when pushed above 3000rpm. The car also has quite a big boot compared to the astra, escourt and 306...

...I have just read some of the titles for other comments on Rovers, and quite frankly, I am suprised! We brought our 1.4 Rover 214i, 5door nearly two years ago, aged about 3 years when we brought it. Our requirements when we started searching for a car were that it had to be affordable (under 6 grand) and have five doors, and three diagonal seat belts in the back. We had first visited a Renault garage, where they had a megane suitable. The sales person had decided that we would buy it. However, promptly told us my husband and I couldn't both test drive it as they had to accompany us, and there was not enough room for our children. The sales person was rude - insulted the car we were trading in, and was not prepared to budge at all, not even offer a free service instead of a price reduction. So we went to our local Rover...
